Largehearted Boy's Interesting CD Releases This Week
REM releases Accelerate today, its first studio album in four years (and first since being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame).
Other new releases I can strongly recommend this week include Annuals' Wet Zoo EP, The Black Keys' Attack & Release, Colour Revolt's Plunder, Beg, and Curse, Sun Kil Moon's April, and Tally Hall's Marvin's Marvelous Mechanical Museum.
Robyn Hitchcock's Shadow Cat is a collection of unreleased tracks recorded between 1993 and 1999, and includes a Jimi Hendrix cover, "The Wind Cries Mary." Apples in Stereo also release a b-sides and rarities compilation, Electronic Projects for Musicians.
Two country box sets caught my eye this week, Willie Nelson's 4-disc One Hell of a Ride and the Carter Family's double-CDThe Acme Sessions: 1952-1956.
Reissues worth noting include two discs with bonus material by Apollo Sunshine, Apollo Sunshine and Katona and Astrid Williamson's Boy for You.
For me, the most interesting release is Kathy Mattea's Coal, a collection of songs about coal mining. A fervent social and environmental activist, Mattea chose these songs after the Sago mine disaster, and they touch on both the human and ecological price of coal mining.
What new releases are you picking up?

REM
they sound loud and pissed off. this record is fucked up, big time. at an average age of 50 yrs old, they shouldn't still be playing with this much energy, but they are. accelerate sounds like 20 yr olds who just discovered a crate full of 70s punk and glam albums. seriously fucked up, scary and amazing. i honestly didn't think they had this in them...
