neighbors still not happy with Park Slope's Union Hall

Union Hall, last week (Bryan Bruchman)
Union Hall

The ongoing war between neighbors and Park Slope venue Union Hall is still raging.

P.S. Retribution Gospel Choir (Alan Sparhawk of Low) is playing there on June 17th.

Why do the residents blame the bar when IT'S THE DRUNKS THEMSELVES that are the real problem???

It's not Union Hall's fault that drunk people don't give a shit if they're wasted and shouting at 3 a.m.

i'm so fucking sick of hearing about neighbors complaining about noise. fucking move to the burbs if you can't handle a little noise.

Its not the music. The music is downstairs and contained. The upstairs area is packed with drunken frat boys and their bimbo girlfriends and then a bunch of idiots trying to play bocce ball.

If we could just smoke in bars in NYC again, then all these fuckers would be behind closed doors...that is until they try to stumble home and puke on the sidewalk...

Maybe there should be a 2 drink limit.

I'd take this over the trucks driving by my window all night any day. If any of you crochity fuckers want to trade... let me know.

If you were never in a fraternity, should you really care about this place anyway?

Posted by Anonymous | April 29, 2008 2:41 PM

^^^ for the music and comedy downstairs, yes. could never hang out upstairs though.

Posted by Anonymous | April 29, 2008 2:51 PM

If the downstairs music room didn't exist, I personally wouldn't care less if UH closed. The upstairs/bar section is a hellhole. I don't want to see it close solely because of the music room. It's become a very important gathering place for interesting music in Brooklyn.

^ ^^
I agree. the raison d'etre for Union Hall is downstairs, not upstairs. I personally get a kick out of having to machete my way through the riff-raff upstairs to get downstairs, it makes me appreciate it all the more when I get there...

I hafta say it's amazing, the dichotomy between the folks who go primarily to see the music downstairs and the yahoos who go to UH just to stay upstairs and get drunk and play bocce ball.

After walking upstairs from a show, I always experience the same disoriented feeling of "Where the shit am I?"

As for neighbors complaining: Their biggest gripe is people walking up Union St. drunk. That can be ANYONE! It's not necessarily Union Hall's clientele.

Who cares? Union Hall is one of the worst venues in NYC. Everything is wrong with that space. The sound is lousy and you can't see anything since there's barely a stage to speak of---goodbye and good riddance.

Posted by TWB | April 29, 2008 4:07 PM

TWB, I disagree. I think it's become one of the most important showcase venues in NYC. The sound is typically spot on and the vibe is always amazing.

"One of the worst venues in NYC"?!?

Yes, everyone's entitled their opinion, but when it's so completely off the mark, ya gotta be called on it. If you'd rather go to a place like Crash Mansion over Union Hall to see/hear music, then you're definitely on bad bad drugs.

Posted by Mid Fingg | April 29, 2008 4:13 PM

Eh, even the downstairs audience is also pretty bad. Too many yappers there who seem to mostly care about being at a cool show than appreciating a cool show.

Hey, guys, let's go to that concert and talk the whole way through it! What a great idea! It's a great idea!

Posted by Anonymous | April 29, 2008 4:51 PM

Let's all just download live bootlegs and forget going to shows! Problem solved! Right...?

Posted by Anonymous | April 29, 2008 5:27 PM

I just go for the comedy.

Posted by nick | April 29, 2008 5:30 PM

You don't need to go to Union Hall for comedy.
It's all right here in the comments section.

Let er rip fellers!

The place is terrible. There is nothing to like about it at all. It's like a pimple on Brooklyn that won't go away.

You know, I heard Proactiv® does wonders...

as a graphic designer, the placement of those arrows on the Union Hall chalkboard is appalling

Posted by Anonymous | April 29, 2008 10:17 PM

i must agree with the graphic designer.

and also that the bro vibe upstairs is frighteningly lame.

and also that the downstairs is a great room to see great shows.

but it's the jock money that keeps the place going, so if you want a little downstairs, you gotta deal with a little upstairs.

Union Hall is not the greatest place to see bands. You can barely see anything if you are not in front. I'm 6'1" and can barely see the stage. I have zero issues with sightlines at T5, Irving, Cakeshop, etc...

Bro Vibe!
