Nellie McKay @ Joe's Pub (late show), NYC - pics

photos & words by Chris La Putt

Nellie McKay @ Joes Pub

Nellie McKay played two shows at Joe's Pub in NYC yesterday (April 1, 2008) (and another NYC show the day before that) (and she has even more coming up). I had tickets to the late show, but almost didn't go due to the freak rain storm. I don't know why I was so hesitant on going. I always enjoy myself at a Nellie shows, and last night ended up being no different. I got to the show around the start time of 11:30 thinking that she would be on time for once. No dice. She was half an hour late for the 9:30 show, so we got pushed back to midnight, but it wasn't that much of a hassle. We were finally let in as the audience from earlier show (David Byrne included) were letting out.

The show started and I saw two video cameras filming. I discovered later that they were a team of Canadian film makers doing a documentary on the ukulele, and that they decided to film Nellie playing one. I thought it was an April Fools joke at first, but it wasn't, and she ended up playing more songs than usual on the little instrument. She was quirky as usual, and the audience loved it. For the crowd favorite "Zombie," she brought in a couple of her friends (pictured) to act while she sang. That was definitely the highlight of the evening for me. More photos below.....

I don't think she's insane, I think she's determined compared to the passive-aggressive commenters here she's actually trying to do something. I may not agree with some of the stuff she believes in but I respect her for it.

What I forgot to mention was we also got some brochures at Joe's about the Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary (http://www.woodstockfas.org/ which is a non-profit organization and shelter that works to end the systematic abuse of animals used for food.

I've never heard of it and didn't read it until now but it looks like they're doing some laudable stuff at the farm. Would I ever visit it? No. Would I pay for a show by Nellie to have the proceeds given to this org? Absolutely.

It's better than some of the "activists" that hang around Union Square all day professing bull crap.

Here's she is when she's actually serious about something: http://youtube.com/watch?v=17sVxx3qcN0

She's one of those artists who I respect artistically but can't stand their music.

I also find that demonic smile of hers to be highly disturbing.
