Alright fine Coachella wins. Lolla gave them a run, but Aphex Twin/Portishead/Kraftwerk/Prince is kind of unbeatable even if I think Lolla's undercard is still a little bit better.
Posted by zik | April 9, 2008 2:39 PM
Yep - Coachella wins it in the end. They win it by a purple nose, ahead of Lolla, and by a freakin long purple busload ahead of All Points Weak.
Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2008 2:45 PM
HOLY SHIT!!!
PRINCE!!!!!!
APW is officially dead to me - I am biting the major money bullet - because I will NOT miss this now!
Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2008 2:46 PM
YESSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by Tremagnum PI | April 9, 2008 2:47 PM
yes!!! finally the lineup is totally awesome! i love how they waited until the lolla lineup was revealed to announce this
Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2008 2:48 PM
I don't see why people are bitching about APW. It's not like it costs as much as better festivals like Coachella and Lollapalooza. Oh wait...
Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2008 2:49 PM
does his guitar really have a purple penis?
Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2008 3:00 PM
i thought his guitar IS the purple penis
Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2008 3:03 PM
APW is the equivalent of Danny Devito in Twins.
Posted by birdy | April 9, 2008 3:06 PM
UGH... this is amazing
Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2008 3:08 PM
APW is organized by the same people as Coachella. If they pulled this out of their asses 2 weeks before, I suggest ya'll hold up on the hate before August.
Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2008 3:12 PM
there's no room for anything else at APW
Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2008 3:14 PM
APW already announced jack johnson, how do you improve on that?
Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2008 3:27 PM
Here's an idea. How about the next time there is a post about a festival (like when ACL announces Monday), we see if we can avoid for just one day comparing it to APW.
If I read another "APW just got PWNED" post, I'm going to lose my shit.
Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2008 3:28 PM
ACL will be announced on monday?
Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2008 3:39 PM
acutally - there's still room on sunday for a big name for APW....it has one less artist that night than the rest
Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2008 3:45 PM
Sounds like most of you are saying this:
Shirts (APW)
vs.
Blouses (Coachella)
and Blouses will be serving up pancakes after they blow Shirts away.
Posted by Eggs1234 | April 9, 2008 3:51 PM
Prince is garbage
Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2008 3:53 PM
good luck with avoiding the APW comparisons...the comments section is dark netherworld of schadenfreude, elitism and general bitching. enthusiasm for anything is quickly doused with (attempted) snark and ridicule. it's kind of like high school, except worse. APW doesn't stand a chance in here.
Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2008 3:54 PM
if only Coachella added STP
Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2008 3:57 PM
APW actually is a hell of a lot cheaper than coachella or lollapalooza if you don't have the money to fly out there (and stay in a hotel) for those better festivals.
Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2008 3:59 PM
except APW has 1/3rd the # of bands and shitty ones at that
Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2008 4:00 PM
whoopdi do.

Posted by Max Pwnage | April 9, 2008 4:01 PM
here's a positive comment that will surely be overlooked/dismissed: liberty state park is an incredible venue. the manhattan skyline and the statue of liberty are just over your shoulder, and it feels like you're floating on water. definitely played a role in the legendary status of those 2001 radiohead shows.

"APW actually is a hell of a lot cheaper than coachella or lollapalooza if you don't have the money to fly out there (and stay in a hotel) for those better festivals."
It's only a bit cheaper than Lollapalooza. Lolla tickets are still under $200, flights from NYC to Chicago are cheap and the hostel a couple of blocks from the festival is under $40 per night. Staying at one of the hotels listed on the APW site will certainly be more expensive than that and the alternative of going back and forth instead sucks.

"if only Coachella added STP"
yea thats what i was hoping for. but ill settle for prince.

yeah prince really makes it better. if prince excites you cock probably does as well..........

This is just getting pretty stupid for a bunch of different reasons.
Hopefully it is well aware that most of the people making these comments aint going to these festivals. Since when did these hipster morons get flush with cash. Give me a fucking break. They just like to come on here and make snarky stupid comments about which festival is better.
Also, the guy who claims it is not that much more expensive to go to lolla or coachella if you live in nyc is just plain fucking stupid. Of course it is going to be. It will be at least 400 more expensive. Again when did these lowlifes become so rich. They complain day in and day out on tickets for a show being 35 dollars and suddenly they can fly around the country.
All of these bands(except maybe Aphex Twin) you will see here in nyc before the end of the year and many of them in more intimate places. And that includes Portishead who ARE touring. Prince is planning a tour in the fall as well with his full show.
Truth be told, all 3 of these festivals kind of suck. Festival shows suck! The bands dont play full sets. You really think you are gonna get a 2 1/2 hour Prince show which is his norm and the best shows he does. Unless you fight your way up to the front or stay there all day you aint seeing shit. You can never see half the bands you want to because they all overlap each other.
It is a scene yes but for my money(and even if it is extra) i would rather wait to see these bands come here with their own show and their full set and the experience of seeing AND hearing it. That is why i go see live music.
Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2008 4:47 PM
Actually I have been to coachella 3 times now and never have had too hard of a time seeing any bands and I end up going home seeing 30 bands by the end of the weekend. No, they don't ALL play full sets, mainly just the headliners, but the sets aren't that short either. And for the money you pretty much see each band for less than $10 in the end in an amazing environment. And, I am getting to be too old for festivals and I still manage to enjoy myself out there in the dessert.
Posted by Brent | April 9, 2008 4:54 PM
i just wonder how many festivals youve been to, every year some of the best sets ive seen happen at festivals.
guys- keep in mind if you go to coachella, taxi ride from Palm springs airport to festival grounds is 80 bucks, and its almost an hour ride.
Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2008 4:55 PM
Well said Brent, especially agree with the "amazing environment". Coachella is awesome.

'i just wonder how many festivals youve been to, every year some of the best sets ive seen happen at festivals'
I would bet i have been to more festivals than you have and any band i have seen i have seen them play better shows on their own.
"Actually I have been to coachella 3 times now and never have had too hard of a time seeing any bands and I end up going home seeing 30 bands by the end of the weekend. Actually none of them play full sets. Most of the sets are short except for the headliners. And if you are going to sit here and tell me you would see a band better at a festival rather than at their own show im gonna laugh at you. Again unless you stay up front all day or shove your way up front when your band comes on you are looking at video screens or small ants on a stage. And saying you see 30 bands is not seeing 30 bands sets all the way through from start to finish. It is virtually impossible, You see a little of this one and a little of that one. And again, except for the headliners, most of these bands you will see in your hometown at much smaller places with much better sound.
Like i said before for my money and even if it costs extra id much rather see any of these bands in their own full shows where i can see and hear much better.

Again as stated above it is a scene and yes coachella is beautiful but that is not the main reason i go to see live music. Let's take our fave mentioned band on this blog Daft Punk. Now i was at Coachella for Daft Punk and I also saw Daft Punk at Coney Island. No comparison. Coney was much much better. But yes Coachella was prettier than Keyspan Park. You got me on that one.
Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2008 5:11 PM
I've been to Coachella every year since 2001 - I fly across the country and save my cash to do so - there is a reason.
Same reason I'm not going to APW, it just ain't worth it. Call that bitching if you will, but those who DO GO to these things, know that APW is a box of goods when compared to other festivals, and money has NOTHING to do with it, if you care enough to go.
I totally understand the APW hate.
A correction, AEG has just as much influence (or lack thereof) of APW as Goldenvoice. It's not completely there baby, so a Prince caliber move ain't gonna happen.
Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2008 5:34 PM
um... Daft was better at COACHELLA than Coney.
In fact there wouldn't even be a fucking Coney island show without the Coachella one.

My god another ridiculously stupid comment. You and this guy seriously have no idea what you are talking about but whatever. This blog and others are filled with misinformation so continue the trend.
"Daft was better at Coach - sorry people."
Don't agree and neither do many many many people who like myself were at both. So you can shove your sorry.
"actually ive been to coachella, bonnaroo, v fest, and acl..and this year ill be returning to coachella and hittin up lolla or outside lands in san fran. so no, i do get out of my house"

wow, who cares it's prince. lolla still wins, by far. roger waters vs. rage? hm, yeah okay.
Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2008 6:05 PM
I was at both and I have to say Daft at Coachella was a tad bit better in terms of new show, surprise factor and all of that - Coney had a better setlist, but I give the slight nod to Coachella.
And that person does know - it was Goldenvoice who fronted the money for Daft's pyramid, the only way they could get them to play... you could've read all about it in URB a few months ago when they interviewed Paul T. from Goldenvoice.
Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2008 6:06 PM
>um, anon 6:02....
YOU WERE JUST PWNED IN YOUR ASSHOLE WITH A DOUCHBAG POKER STICK!
Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2008 6:08 PM
Loving this thread. But to the person who just said no question Daft was better at Coach. Dude I am sorry but I am going to disagree. Hmm let's see a band playing at a festival to a crowd not just there to see them and a band playing a show where everyone was there to see them. I too was at both and I am very sorry but i thought the show at Coney Island was much better.
But what a great thing about music. Different opinions and none are correct.
Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2008 6:09 PM
"And that person does know - it was Goldenvoice who fronted the money for Daft's pyramid, the only way they could get them to play... you could've read all about it in URB a few months ago when they interviewed Paul T. from Goldenvoice."
Actually I did read that article along with a lot more inside info and i still say he does not know what he is talking about. Yes they fronted the money but do you think if they didnt that someone else would not have? Yes cause Daft Punk was not a group anyone really liked or had an audience. So no promoters except Goldenvoice would have sponsored them. Yeah uh huh. Give me a fucking break. The point the idiot was making was there would be no tour this past year if not for Coachella and that is just not true.
">um, anon 6:02....
YOU WERE JUST PWNED IN YOUR ASSHOLE WITH A DOUCHBAG POKER STICK"
Well it certainly sounds like you are the authority on getting stuck in the asshole you loser douchebag
Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2008 6:14 PM
Sorry i just read what i wrote above and just to make it clear what i was saying yes goldenvoice fronted the money for the pyramid but they were not the only promoters trying to do this. Daft Punk was being thrown offers from lots of different places. To claim that you would never have seen them on tour this year unless the Coachella show happened is ridiculous and wrong.
Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2008 6:19 PM
I don't think any promoters where as interested in FDAFT as much as Goldenvoice was.
Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2008 6:19 PM
what time does Daft Punk go on?
Posted by Pwn Town | April 9, 2008 6:22 PM

Posted by Anonymous | April 9, 2008 6:26 PM
I was the Anon 6:09pm person and I hate to wade back into this cesspool of misinfo but what do you all of you do for a living. Do any of you actually work in the concert industy as I do. Just wondering because if you are making your assumptions by interviews you read in magazines like URB I must laugh in your face. Not to try to sound like too much of a know it all, don't believe everything you read and hear. Paul T as most people who actually work in this industry will tell you talks a lot of shit that is not always correct. Maybe not as much shit as Ron Delsner but quite a bit nonetheless. Here is a revelation for you-Promoters lie big time. They also try to make themselves out to have done things no other promoter would or could do.

daft punk vegoose > daft punk coney island
talk/ whine amongst yourselves.
Posted by aukenbals | April 9, 2008 6:35 PM
I could see Prince playing ACL, but not Lollpalooza, just does not fit into the fest.
It works for Coachella because they are known to have strange/uncommon festival appearances, like Madonna.

i saw daft punk at both shows...they were better at coachella (being in the big tent and not having played in the states in many years must have helped)...though not bad by any means at coney.

another vote for daft punk being better at coach than at coney island.
i mean.. it was the same exact show (minus the encore). but not knowing what comes next just makes the show better.
only time coney felt like being inside that tent in 2006 was during the encore.
Posted by Anonymous | April 10, 2008 10:55 AM
i saw daft punk at market hotel, best show ever!!!!! vampire weekend and dan deacon opened. arcade fire was in the audience. check my flick site for pics. see u at apw

Silly losers, no real Daft Punk fan would ever say any of their shows are exactly the same. What and how they mix into the songs are different every night. Coney was better. Every person in there was tuned into the same vibe. No bands festival shows are better than the ones they play to their audiences.
Posted by Anonymous | April 10, 2008 1:16 PM
daft punk indeed better at Coach.
Posted by Anonymous | April 10, 2008 2:05 PM
Yet another vote for Daft being better at Coachella. The surprise factor and venue totally outweigh the minor league baseball stadium at Coney Island. And to the person that said Daft was playing to a festival audience that was not all there to see them...WTF are you talking about? They played during the headliner and yet people were spilling out all over the tent. There were a shit load more people at Coachella there to see Daft Punk.
And to the rest of you that were arguing about whether or not that tour would have happened without the Coachella show. Without a doubt (and this is straight from the horse's mouth), the Coachella show inspired Daft to do the U.S. tour. Forget the $$$ for the pyramid and all that crap. They have plenty of money. But they enjoyed that show so much that they felt like going out on tour. Simple as that.
"No bands festival shows are better than the ones they play to their audiences."
- This is a completely ridiculous statement.
