Regina Spektor played, but Sound Fix still having problems
Only Son & Regina Spektor @ Sound Fix, Brooklyn, NY - Apr 19, 2008 (slicknick1986)

People started lining up outside Sound Fix at 7am for Regina Spektor's free 1pm show in honor of Record Store Day on Saturday. Unfortunately though, Sound Fix (a record store with attached bar and performance space) is still having problems - a lot of them....
...According to Bradley, the Dept. of Health, the Dept. of Buildings, and the Police Dept. have all issued violations on the business, many of them requiring court appearances. "It's been really overwhelming," says Bradley. The record store owner believes the violations are rooted in complaints from a couple of neighbors who live in an adjacent building, one of whom, Teresa Polonski, works for Assemblyman Joseph Lentol. "I'm sympathetic to noise complaints, and we've done a lot to try to mitigate the noise," says Bradley. "All this seems to be really excessive to me." The Dept. of Health shut down the Sound Fix Lounge after serving it with three violations for operating without a food license; the first violation was issued March 6th, the second on March 8th, and the third on March 28th. "On 3/28 the establishment was swarmed by inspectors and shut down. I was advised by DOH that this was actually a Mayor's task force," says Mikelle V. Komor of Wagner Davis P.C., one of the attorneys working for Sound Fix... [Brownstoner]

Regina Spektor is about as exciting as going to a temple and watching somebody's fat spinster aunt sing.

You are correct.

ok in line at 7 am for a 1 pm show? you people are insane. do you also stand for two hours to get the free iced coffee at Starbucks when they do that promotion?

"The Dept. of Health shut down the Sound Fix Lounge after serving it with three violations for operating without a food license;"
What a douchebag. Soundfix is insinuating that neighbors are calling in noise complaints, when in reality it all stems from them operating without licenses. If you serve food, get a license. Not hard is it? You can't play by your own rules and expect to get away with it.
Posted by Anonymous | April 21, 2008 9:48 AM
exactly. as much as we all want to feel for the little guy, it's sound fix's own damn fault. play by the same rules everyone else has to. send of story.
Posted by Anonymous | April 21, 2008 9:52 AM
i didn't think they served food

I'd InSpektor Regina with OR without a license!

Remember, kiddies: Whenever a venue is hit with noise complaints and code violations, it's never their fault--it's the neighbors' fault for complaining.

I don't know about the laws in NYC, but in California ice is considered food.
Posted by twb | April 21, 2008 10:24 AM
twb, it's the same in new york. if a health inspector catches a bartender scooping ice into your drink with his bare hands, the bar will get slapped with a fine.
soundfix can go take a shit. maybe if they're shut down, a nicer indie business with better owners will take over.

I know nothing personal of the owners of Soundfix. But I do know if a music venue/bar opens right next to a long-standing neighborhood, there's gonna be complaints. Plain and simple.

Why the fuck are so many people who read a MUSIC BLOG so giddy when they hear about the possibility of venues getting shut down (Studio B, McCarren Park Pool, Sound Fix, CBGBs, Tonic, etc.)? That just doesn't seem to make any sense...Are you reading a music blog because you like music or because you like being an asshole?
That being said, for the person who said it's not hard to get a license. Well, it is and if that person could READ, "Although Bradley tried to renew the license, the DOH has't [sic] let him because it has records of unpaid fines from the space's previous owners." Basically speaking, they were operating with a license, they are currently operating on good faith while attempting to renew it. Good faith that the city clearly isn't living up to. "[T]he Administrative Tribunal called the issuance of the two violations in two days inequitable and unconscionable."
I know reading comprehension is tough, but, come on, let's try it. You'll need that skill one day for your SATs.

bad karma follows around people. sound fix is one of them.
Posted by Anonymous | April 21, 2008 11:44 AM
Why do we get giddy? Because assholes. It's what we do best. Plus we love baiting the holier-than-thou's such as yourself. That's our purpose--to annoy the fuck outta know-it-alls. Yeah, we're stupid. You're smart.

I may be wrong, but it seems like the BV boards are getting invaded by all the assholes who post on Curbed all day.

11:20,
i think it would have been different if bowery ballroom, mercury lounge, maxwell's or southpaw were shut down. these are great music venues which offer fine shows at very reasonable ticket prices.
CBGB hadn't booked a decent show in 10 years.
soundfix is run by jerks.
studio B is an overpriced scenester hole.
i don't know a single person who rejoiced when tonic closed, or when brownie's became a mediocre, overpriced bar.
it's a matter of individual venues, not the concept.

Does anybody have an estimate on what percentage of the population of North Side are assholes? Just curious.
Posted by Anonymous | April 21, 2008 12:02 PM
That Soundfix intern running around was the most annoying thing I have ever seen in my life. Soundfix is just plain dumb. Why did they advertise the hell out of this show? What did they expect to happen? I have no sympathy for them or their dying industry.
And yes, the North Side is a bunch of yuppie twats running around.

75%

There were people who rejoiced when Tonic was shut down, though mainly in places I would expect.
I like the claim that Sound Fix is "run by jerks." Many people would say the same thing about the Bowery/Mercury conglomerate as well as Maxwell's. I would argue that NONE of these places are run by jerks, but when dealing with music venues, we all have some bad experiences with some places and/or people at some point.
Overpriced(?):
Long Blondes @ Studio B: $14; @ Bowery: $15/$17
I see no reason for rejoicing.
Posted by Anonymous | April 21, 2008 12:21 PM
Sound Fix is a venue and a store. Not a venue that has in-stores.
Posted by Anonymous | April 21, 2008 12:21 PM
$2.00 would be overpriced for a Long Blondes show
Posted by Anonymous | April 21, 2008 12:28 PM
They couldn't renew their license, so they decided to break the law instead. Two wrongs do not make a right.
Posted by Anonymous | April 21, 2008 12:33 PM
"$2.00 would be overpriced for a Long Blondes show"
So we should be applying pressure to close down the overpriced Bowery, right?
Posted by Anonymous | April 21, 2008 12:35 PM
Which one is Regina Spektor?
Posted by Anonymous | April 21, 2008 12:56 PM
"So we should be applying pressure to close down the overpriced Bowery, right?"
If they charge $2.01 or more for a Long Blondes show. Yes.

I inherited my families propert. I am working behind the scene to shut these illegal places down. McCarren Park Pool will become a POOL for families with children. Not overgrown kiddies on trustfunds....
Soon I can jack up the rents when a ferry goes to the Burg and FAMILES (with more money than hipsters) move in as an alternative to Manhattan.
