R.E.M. on the Today Show (videos)

brooke and michael stipe (F. Michael Andrew)
Brooke and Michael Stipe

I feel that the people are ready to like R.E.M. again. Part of me feels like it's 1985 and we're a brand-new band again. [Mike Mills to Rolling Stone]

Scott McCaughy is looking like Jerry Garcia these days. Lotta grey on that stage.

BROOKE IS THE BADDEST CAKE BAKER IN TOWN.

having REM around again makes soooo many new "indie" bands look like shit now. i mean, they're from a time when you actually spent time practicing your music before you fucking went out and tried to do shows.

whatever. it's time for my metamucil.

They were great and they are BACK!!!

i agree, who is brooke and what the f does she bake that's sooooo badass? cookies? does she bake cookies?!

REM is one of the best, most influential bands of all time. Im 25 now. I cannot tell you how many hours i spent as a kid listening to their music staring out the car window on road trips....

nostalgia for their heyday too. post-cold war, pre-war on terror, pre-credit crunch shenanigans, solid leadership. America!, not America?

*sigh*

@1:20- Agreed. Though, something tells me early REM "practices" were more of the backyard keg party variety.

Posted by Anonymous | April 2, 2008 2:07 PM

No, MIke Mills, we are not ready to like REM again.

"REM is one of the best, most influential bands of all time. Im 25 now. I cannot tell you how many hours i spent as a kid listening to their music staring out the car window on road trips...."

Wow, my dog too. I never realised how much influential they were to him! I think I will buy him the new CD.

"nostalgia for their heyday too. post-cold war..."

The Berlin Wall didn't start to come down until late 1989 and the USSR continued to exist until the very end of 1991.

Hey 2:23,
Go to Youtube and watch REM doing "Harborcoat" in Germany in '85. That there is "rock" Mr. Hipster. Go back to ironing your argyle sweater dickwad.

Cakes. The best damn cakes in the business. Peace out, cool sandwich.

I second that notion for 2:20 to get a clue. Ask any of these new indie bands who their inspiration was/is and they'll say REM most of the time.

Posted by driverdave | April 2, 2008 4:28 PM

Despite the strange path the band has followed since Bill Berry's departure, they have one of the best album runs ever. Today most bands are lucky to have one album so inspirational.

That Brooke looks pretty cute. Anybody have her number? I'd like her to bake me a cake while REM plays me a song.

Posted by ponch | April 2, 2008 6:54 PM

She looks pretty cute? How can you conclude that from such a small, lo-res image? You must be desperate.

Everything old is new again

Posted by Anon888 | April 4, 2008 10:03 AM

Yeah...maybe "a lotta grey on that stage", but I doubt dude that your YOUNG coldplay bands will still be doing shit when they get some grey hair.

They'll have busted up after 1-3 one hit wonder albums (that made the charts thanks 90% to their producer and 10 % top maybe their actual song writing & real instrument playing !

R>E>M & their music have said it all 10X over already & have their place assured in Rock history. PERIOD !
