'Silent Rave' in Union Square, NYC Friday night

For you and your walkman (or so you know what the hell is going on when you walk by Union Square Friday night after work)...
Date:
Friday, April 18, 2008
Time:
6:30pm - 11:00pm
Location:
Union Square
City/Town:
New York, NY
DescriptionOk so thanks to the absolutely overwhelming success of the Silent Rave New York group, the time has come already to set up an ACTUAL EVENT and I actually have to organise this whole thing! So here goes...
This is extremely exciting for me, especially as I'm an exchange student who only moved here from London a few months ago!
For those of you who have not seen the group or do not know what a Silent Rave is, check out the info and videos on the original page seen here:
http://hs.facebook.com/group.php?gid=24032096712&ref=mfThe basic premise is thousands of people turn up in a public place, plug in their own ipods, listen to their own music and dance and rave for hours!
The prospect of raving like you really don't care about what other people think, with thousands of fellow dancers, is a bloody brilliant one I think you'll agree!
These times and locations are 99% set unless there's a big movement and/or good reason to change them. I'd love to do it sooner, but this way people won't be away for Spring Break, plus it'll be warmer by the end of April, and we can get loads of support in that time!
Updates will be posted as we get nearer the time. As for now all we can do is spread the word as much as possible, and then on the day: show up, plug the pod in, turn up the playlist and start raving at the precise random time (to be determined soon - probably around the 6pm mark)
After the traditional huge 10 second countdown everyone RAVE and DISCO till your legs fall off or your iPod battery runs out! (Trust me I've gone for over four hours before, those buggers have long battery lives!)
There is never an official end time for Silent Raves, its just whenever you're done that it ends. Facebook requires an end time which is why I put one in.
Anyone who's 'missing out' I hope you have very good reasons for not attending one of the best nights in NYC this year!
Anyway - keep inviting! Lets get this huge before the day arrives!
PS. Any photographers/film makers etc. are very welcome to come too! The London raves always have bloody loads of journalists and no-one minds, as long as you post your work for us to see afterwards! (via) (via)

Can't we just combine all these dumb flash mob things into one big pantsless pillow fighting rave mass suicide and be done with them already? Fucksake.
Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2008 5:58 PM
i think ill watch and throw pennies on them from the roofdeck of my building.

Dumb. At least IE's "silent" stuff involves people listening to the same thing, so there's actually some kind of group action. This is just a bunch of idiots having seizures.

This should hold over any fans of Dan Deacon or Team Robespierre. Kids.
Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2008 6:45 PM
i think i'll stop by just to have a laugh, and i do agree that if people are listening to the same stuff then you'd have massive reactions like the one you can find on the london's events. everyone going "yeah!" at the same time and throwing their hands up in the air, which it's fun.

Bonnaroo has a cool silent disco at night. I dont know how fun it is but its pretty funny to watch.

Wow, just when you think things cant get more stupid and lame. I like how he says for those missing one of the best nights in nyc ever. Well i will give him a pass since he is an exchange student who has only been in nyc for a few months. He is still a loser idiot though.

What if everyone just decided to play the same thing at the same time? (like the Daft Punk live album or something)
Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2008 9:30 PM
oh my god, what a cranky bunch of curmudgeons. What are you guys, senior citizens or something?
Posted by buddhababy | April 17, 2008 9:31 PM
Dumbest idea ever.
Posted by CN | April 17, 2008 10:17 PM
What time does Daft Punk go on and mime a performance?
Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2008 10:21 PM
BRAG POST ANON 6:05.

I agree with posts previously. This is stupid if everyone is listening to different stuff. The Roo had a great one where everyone listened to the same stuff, which made the experience much better. You danced to the same beat, same ups and downs. They need to have everyone down load a playlist or something and start it at the same time for this to be truly fun.

My friend's brother loved the Rave til Dawn CD (pictured above) and used to blast it while driving around town. He especially loved Stylophonia by Two Little Boys. I wish I was joking.

Another way for idiots to waste their time in Union Square. My sentiments with anon@5:58pm.
Let's round up all these pantless subway riding pillow fight enthusiast silent raving flash mobbers & unleash a band of Mexican skinheads on their asses. I WILL turn up for that shit, camera in tow.

the alienation of the bourgeoise leads to precisely this kind of shit...it's unbelievable, how deeply lost we are as a culture....never a spontaneous event to go paint a school, or visit the cancer ward of a hospital, oh no. let's have people meet and do stupid dance moves and applaud each other. a pathetic commentary on the state of things...

I'm sure it will be another event for NYU rich kids to partake so they can believe they are cool and actually giving something back to the community instead of participating in its destruction. I think after the rave, everybody is heading over to that fabulous Whole Foods for smoothies and then back to the penthouse dorms for more raving. what an effing life.
Posted by NYUisShite | April 18, 2008 7:47 AM
Ummmmm... the organizer is a Brooklyn Heights high school student.
Does that make it more or less pathetic?
Posted by Anonymous | April 18, 2008 8:20 AM
The whole thing couldn't get more pathetic.
Posted by Anonymous | April 18, 2008 8:39 AM
if you don't want to go, don't.
but shut the fuck up if you don't like the idea.
Posted by Anonymous | April 18, 2008 9:15 AM
Anyone that comes up with this dumb idea or attends this deserves ridicule. Sorry 9:15am.
Posted by Anonymous | April 18, 2008 9:46 AM
All I can do is shake my head in disappointment when I read about such empty, idiotic "happenings."

Love the story about your brother mp77. That was the worst song on the "Rave 'til Dawn" cd.
In fact, most of that cd sucked aside from a couple of stand-out tracks such as "Injected with a Poison" and "A Million Colors."
Ah, memories.

Remember that cheesy techno "song" with the scary Greek chorus part where everyone would wave their arms around like crazy? Was that on Rave 'til Dawn?
Posted by Anonymous | April 18, 2008 10:26 AM
whatever happened to kids drinking cheap beer, smoking pot, sniffing glue and having unprotected sex? how did shit get this lame?
Posted by Anonymous | April 18, 2008 10:30 AM
"whatever happened to kids drinking cheap beer, smoking pot, sniffing glue and having unprotected sex? how did shit get this lame?"
thats fucking hilarious
seriously... I love the perfect clash of lame raver dorks getting bashed by New York hipster snobbery... :)
Though I will admit to taking drugs, rockin a minidisc player and "silent raving" in the Rocky Mountains 10 years ago.
Posted by Anonymous | April 18, 2008 1:10 PM
ermmmm. no bass cabinets to hug? methinks these kids are missing the point.
Posted by redboy | April 18, 2008 2:14 PM
Did rave 'til dawn have Lords of Acid's "rough sex" on it? I can't remember. That was the jam. "Dominator" was a good one, too. Ahh...early 90's techno. "It's a fine day..."
Posted by yo mama | April 18, 2008 2:41 PM
i'm bigger and bolder and rougher and tougher, in other words, sucker, there is no other. i'm the one and only dominator.
Posted by ebeneezer goode | April 18, 2008 3:03 PM
so what do you guys like then?
Posted by Anonymous | April 18, 2008 4:34 PM
"i'm bigger and bolder and rougher and tougher, in other words, sucker, there is no other. i'm the one and only dominator."
LOL! No you di'nt...
Thanks for the flashback.

OK...I just walked by this and as an "early shift" reporter, it's pretty lame (and this is coming from someone with an open-minded attitude and who likes performance art and other public spectacles in the name of shock and a good time). It's just that most of the crowd weren't actually "party people" (no surprise there...what actual party kid would go to this, especially in broad open daylight, since you basically can't do drugs), so you've got a hodge podge of young trashy kids (and not in a sexy way), curious onlookers and photographers. Plus, as mentioned before, everyone is dancing to their different music so there's no synchronicity to everybody's actions and movements. Again...it was early, so maybe it'll get better now that it's dark.

Saw some shit go down over there, was talking in the small park close to Virgin when two kids came running out of the rave down to the subway followed by about 10-15 pissed off looking people.
5 minutes later, cop cars+ambulances all over the place. 14th St Subway shut down "due to police investigation"

Wow this has been horrible to read. You lot are possibly the most bitter and cynical people I have ever had the displeasureof reading. A bunch of keyboard-warrior losers whose lives revolve around an internet blog... What is the need to be so angry against an event that brought joy to thousands of people? You have all forgotten what fun is, you don't necessarily have to have drugs, and if you do then I truly pity you. That being said, I witnessed plenty of drugs being passed around throughout the whole thing.
People turned up, danced to their own music (so that you had diversity and didn't limit people to one genre of music) and had a fantastic time! Look at all the photos and you'll see that you missed out on a genuinely fun evening, for free, and something that is pretty original too.
I really hope you lot manage to remove yourselves from your twisted little holes before you perish in your own misery.

This was a great idea.... if you all had the same playlist it might be better but I'm sure it was a blast no less. I'm just sad I couldn't make it XD
Posted by Me | April 24, 2008 7:22 PM
Hey have you ever had the urge to dance in public but your to afraid to be your self because society says dancing by urge is unfathomable,Congratulations you became controlled by society i think we need to appreciate peoples individuality here 's judgement
