'Southpaw owner to take over Galapagos space'

TONY has it that Southpaw owner Matthew Roff, currently involved in the final stages of opening new Prospect Heights beer garden Franklin Park, plans to sign a lease tomorrow on the Galapagos space in Williamsburg.(thx J)The name: Natural Selection. "We're all fans of Darwin, obviously," says Roff, who will partner with the owners of popular South Slope watering hole Bar Four. "We were originally going to call it Madagascar but we thought that might be too much of a slap in the face."
Roff plans to retain the location as a performance space, and tells us the transformation could be "weeks away." Galapagos, as has been widely reported, will relocate to Dumbo sometime in 2009.

what a retarded name for a spot of any kind. although, i guess people who work in finance and live there love that pseudo-Darwinian 'survival of the fittest' pap.

i like it! Whether or not you like the name, at least Roff is keeping galapagos open and not closing it down, or rebuilding it twice the size (cough north six cough)

"popular South Slope watering hole Bar Four"
"hahahaha"
Hahahaha indeed. The only reason why Bar Four is packed is because there are no other bars in the area, and it's small.

isnt "natural selection" more of a slap in the face than "madagascar"?? may as well just call it "we live in a fat capitalist society and we own your bar now because we have more money than you"

maybe once they relocate, there won't be as many tools as in the 'burg location, which gets the spillover from the nearby Sea.

Ohh boo hoo hoo, we live in a capitalist society man! I don't want to live among capitalism, or participate in capitalism, but instead of not doing that, instead of moving somewhere else, I'll just continue to buy things, spend money, and willingly support this way of life. But I hate it man!
The guy buys the property, keeps it a performance space just as it always has been and yet he's evil? Fucking grow up.

He ain't evil...just a wacky cokehead. I'm amazed that he's still keeping it together. Enjoy your new bar.

i am psyched about Franklin Park. That area of west CROWN HEIGHTS (not prospect heights) is blowin up!
sad though, it will undercut my motivation to head over the yacht club on sundays.

Where's Franklin Park gonna be? Franklin and Park?
Posted by Anonymous | April 17, 2008 2:32 PM
Franklin and St Johns PL. Great to see a beer garden open in the hood, just in time for summer. Radegast just feels so theme-y. Ugh.

"it's called natural selection bc darwin developed his theories on the galapagos islands, you overzealous dummies!"
yes. It's very clever. Galapagos is where he came up with Natural Selection which is based on the idea of Survival of the Fittest. The new bar is more fit than the old bar. We are even more clever than you!

Galapagos is such an art space with their mud-wrestling, hip-hop parties and weddings. It's nothing like a lame-ass night club. It's all for art-sake man...
