"Spank rock isn't real hip hop , it would be disrepectful to have him on the same bill as Rakim.." [Anonymous]

Rock the Bells

I don't know who wrote the above anonymous comment, but I've had more than one conversation with more than one hip hop fan about the very same thing - "real" vs "hipster" and/or "fake" hip hop. Are Spank Rock and friends "hip hop"? Does it matter? I don't care, but it's always a fun conversation, and I couldn't help but notice the strong prescence Spank Rock and friends have on this year's Rock the Bells festival lineup - a festival that is is, for the most part anyway, about hip hop.

on a related note: Santogold also has shows coming up at the Virgin Megastore and Summerstage. Spank Rock is playing Studio B.

What Would M.I.A. Do?

the whole "real" hip-hop argument is usually brought about through the message the artist is sending via their lyrics, using them as a tool to educate the listener about a cause (or causes) that will propagate the ideals of society and culture said artists stand for.

"real" hip-hop is usually meant to reach those to whom either a proper or higher education may be inaccessible.

Brand Nubian needs to be on that. A lot of those acts are tired as hell.

Steve Akoi would work well on this bill too.

Chromeo should headline this joint

Love the lineup. Won't be going (not a fan of packed all-day festivals highlighted by 20-minute sets), but that's a pretty solid lineup. No Gang Starr, either together or solo?

OBAMA WHERE YOU AT?

more like "downtown records showcase"

but, seriously, questioning whether or not spank rock is hiphop is so middle school lunchtime snobbery it makes me sick...

rappity rap music.

BV, I am ashamed at you!!!

Tribe, Nas, Rakim, De La, and more on the same stage and your story lays focus on all of the nu-skool hipster acts.

The headliners of this festival have been doing this shit for over 20 years. Santogold and Flosstradamous will be forgotten about by the time I'm done typing this.

Witth all the real talent who the F cares about some BS like Kid Sister?

"Witth all the real talent who the F cares about some BS like Kid Sister?"

I believe the point of this post was essentially to ask exactly that.

"what's real hip-hop?" what an idiotic argument.

real hip-hop is happening specifically at the knitting factory regularly

Most of the artists on this bill on and below the Spankrock line (excluding Pharcyde) rode the last wave in and will be riding the next wave out. Part of the reasoning for this billing was to sell tickets, part of it was to try a fresh replacement for the lackluster second stage last year and part of it was due to the sponsors' inability to resist hype persuasion. Trying to compare these "new" artists to a reunited Tribe Called Quest, a reunited Pharcyde, De La Soul, etc. is a joke. I'm glad the disgusting current state of hip-hop (and music) is a fun conversation for you to have. I don't find the topic amusing.

Sidenote: Where are the rock acts? "ROCK" the bells. No RAGE? No rock/metal bands? No anything?

Anyone making snide/childish/uninformed comments about this comment needs to do their homework.

Chromeo? Steve Aoki? "Is it ok to leave after Spank Rock's set?" I hope you get stomped in the pit during Ghostface's set.
