Bowery Ballroom - March 31, 2008 (rococoquille)
MAlkmus

There are a number of New York references in this album: Sheepshead Bay, and the torture of the Van Wyck Expressway at 5pm. Do you miss New York?

Malkmus: Yeah, always. We love it there, me and my wife. Especially when you live where we live on the west coast, which is so different. I just really like New York a lot and the people, mostly. My friends there are what I miss about it, more than the skyline or the food. I just think it has a special kind of spirit.

And you're playing a three-night stand here.

Yeah, three shows in small venues. You know, underplaying our potential. It's going to be fun.

Are you going to vary the set list from night to night?

Oh yeah. We never play the same set twice. Janet is very involved with the set list; she basically does it. So she'll mix it up. [Gothamist]

John Vanderslice opened the show and then ran over to Pianos.

Good to know he mixes up the set now. Once I saw Pavement do the same set on back-to-back nights...they must have assumed nobody in LA the previous night was in SF that night. (Yeah, I was like a Deadhead when Pavement came through California...I was this close to selling muffins and bracelets for gas money.) One night they played two shows at The Palace in Hollywood and the two sets barely differed, hmph.

I saw SM & the Jicks in LA a few years back...one of the most boring shows i've ever witnessed. I like them recorded ...live? they can eat a dick cookie!

phenomenal tonight, even better than last night. More Pig Lib stuff, which is perfect for me--"Vanessa from Queens," "Animal Midnight," and from the debut "Jo Jo's Jacket." "Wicked Wanda," which they didn't do last night, and a somewhat rowdier crowd. I like the move of playing the solo with one hand and shaking the other one dismissively...he seemed cheerier than last night but then "Church on White," a song that makes a man ponder.

Last night's (4/1) show was fantastic, though it appeared S.M. wasn't psyched about it. He seemed a bit tired. Mic stand collapsed, spaced on lyrics, annoying little stuff. Still, band sounded great. Drummer is awesome. S.M. can shred the guitar like no other.

Also, really enjoyed Vanderslice as opening act. Encore in the middle of the crowd was a beautiful touch. That dude has songwriting and guitar chops. Just great.

just curious but what song did john vanderlisce played when he went off stage to the crowd? I missed that part of the show 2 days ago?

vanderslice is a dork. he plays and sings well, but no matter how hard i tried, i simply could not care about anything he said.

Nikki oh nikki was the song he played in the crowd. and i love SM, but last night was just utterly boring. vanderslice was much better. anyone have any pics from when he went into the crowd?

it's true, Stephen was funny last night. I liked when it was Joanna's birthday so instead of singing "Happy Birthday" he said "I'm gonna Hendrix it to you" and played it for her then finished playing with his teeth.

I never liked "Gardenia" on the record but both nights it worked surprisingly well live. "Real Emotional Trash" gets heavier each time he plays it.
