Studio B's CONTROVERSIAL Rooftop Garden (will it open?)

Rooftop Garden not approved?
Banker St

Angry Neighbors?

This is the spectacle that awaited Mr. Heather and I as we strolled down Banker Street last Saturday afternoon. If my memory serves me correctly the time was 3:30 or 4:00 p.m. One tends to muddy such matters when she sees a bunch of skinheads in a fistfight. And that is exactly what I saw. A fistfight. In the middle of the street. At 3:30 or 4:00 in the afternoon.

skinheadsWishing to get the 411 about this incident I asked my fabulous colleague, neighbor and former proprietress of 11222 about this incident. She has the dubious honor of having this establishment as a neighbor.

Miss H: Last weekend Mr. H and I walked by there (Studio B) when Grand Theft Auto had their party last weekend. We had the pleasure of watching a bunch of skinheads get into a fight.

11222: I got to watch all of that from my window. The police were called. The trash generated on the street when it was done was unprecedented. [newyorkshitt.com]

That's just the beginning of the anti-Studio B post. It eventually gets to the part about the Rooftop Garden (Firemashall Bill shout-out included).

to be fair, last weekend was the superbowl of hardcore, which features lots of punk and hardcore bands. not the typical studio b crowd of hipsters who are too high on whatever to realize where they are. i doubt studio b will be booking bands like that very often, if ever again.

Who cares? It's only Greenpoint. Shouldn't those residents be worrying more about the oil spill they live on top of?

HAMMERSKINS! SHARPS! OBAMA..WHERE YOU AT?

Posted by hipster poseur | April 11, 2008 1:25 PM

1:15pm:

my point is that this is not studio b's typical crowd and they rarely even host shows during the afternoon. i doubt many fights break out at shows/dj nights they have, but the superbowl of hardcore obviously attracts a much different crowd than a normal show. i'm saying its more of an anomaly from a typical studio b show and that the neighbors will now exploit that incident to try to stop studio b from doing the rooftop thing.

that greenpoint blog is retarded.

u know what this is...
this is yet another example
of the over pussification of
new york city.
oh people are loud, and drunk, and using
drugs, and getting into fights.
oh my, what is one to do???
motherfucker its nyc!!
this aint kansas
where the hell did u think
u were moving to? fucking transplants!!

now i must say i understand where this comes, being a native new yorker who grew up in the 80's south bronx was no cake walk, and its true
sometimes that shit sucks...
but come on!!
those hipster jerks that usually attend studio b shows arent bothering nobody
until some skinny jean wearing, smelly asshole decides to do a drive by on messerole, and kill an innocent bystander this is just some
pussy ass complaints.
311
ha!

Oh man... Studio B is on their list. They are done...
Anytime a community hates a place this much... their days are numbered. I say they will be gone by the time their liquor license needs renewal.

Listen, you book a show at your club for the kind of people who would piss on their sister for fun, what do you expect?

Posted by Anonymous | April 11, 2008 2:40 PM

I'm a Greenpointer, and I'm happy to have Studio B. Now, I might feel different if I lived right next to it, but what can one expect when he chooses to live at the industrial fringe of a neighborhood. Move to the suburbs, or at least a more residential neighborhood, if you want quiet.

Posted by x_x | April 11, 2008 2:46 PM

While they may be in violation of starting construction without a permit (I see an official Complaint has been filed with the DOB today), I'm not sure if CB1 has any say over prohibiting them to change their CO for Roof occupancy. They'll pay a fine, get the permits, and move on.

However, it may draw a lot of 311 calls for noise.

Posted by jerry yeti | April 11, 2008 3:32 PM

Yeah! I mean, who would ever equate "quiet" with "industrial fringe"? Idiots! Stop complaining and get used to more assholes shouting on your block at 4 a.m.!

@ 2:15

Totally! I can't wait until new york is a shit storm again. Where's the son of the son of sam?

He should be here soon. New Great Depression? NY Times reporting that Police levels are at their lowest since 1990 due to budget cut backs.

shit, New York is going to be cool again before you konw it!

Can't wait until the housing slump catches up to all the new condos they're putting up in brooklyn. Tons of burnt out luxury spots to squat in!

I can almost smell the sweet smell of piss and rum that awaits us on every corner in the glorious future that will be the new old NYC

^shut up. your sarcasim is just annoying.

be careful what you wish for, 3:37

Posted by Anonymous | April 11, 2008 3:39 PM

I was at the Superbowl of Hardcore. It was amazing. Ahh how i miss the old days of NYC where skinhead fights were the norm and you losers had to actually go up to someone and open your trap instead of posting anonymously on a blog. Suprisingly you did not hear as much bullshit talk as you do now.

anon 3:37pm..your story has becoming tiresome and bourgeois

Posted by HIPSTER POSEUR | April 11, 2008 3:58 PM

While I agree that the club should be doing more to control the situation outside (eg: disperse the crowds outside, etc.) at the end of the day people will still complain. eg: Club Exit usually has people who disperse crowds away from the club, but all that does is make people go over to the next corner and/or spread out around the neighborhood. And guess what? Yup, people still bitch & moan. In a way that's probably worse than just keeping people contained in front of the club.

Personally I'd just choose not to live next/near a club, but to each his own. (I used to live above a bar, & guess what..it sucked! So I moved.)
