They were great, but most of the back section was empty...The needed to make this show a lot cheaper to begin with.
Posted by Anonymous | April 29, 2008 10:14 AM
Does anyone know what time they went on last night?
Posted by Anonymous | April 29, 2008 10:15 AM
^^^ Right at 9pm...there was a dj before them who sucked.
Posted by Anonymous | April 29, 2008 10:17 AM
josh ritter pics please.
Posted by baby genius | April 29, 2008 10:25 AM
where is the best place to sit/stand in that venue for a good view and sound mix? in the General Admission Pit area or with a real seat in the center?
Posted by MadRichard | April 29, 2008 10:30 AM
The show was excellent. They were really on. We had seats almost in the center, but snuck into the GA section a few songs in for a much better, and closer, and louder view.
Posted by Anonymous | April 29, 2008 10:35 AM
can one see well even in the back of the GA area?
Posted by MadRichard | April 29, 2008 10:36 AM
yea, the GA is the best. They don't oversell it and the view is amazing
Posted by Anonymous | April 29, 2008 10:40 AM
"^^^ Right at 9pm...there was a dj before them who sucked."
They did not go on at 9pm. They actually went on at 9:05pm and they went off at 10:52pm. I am sure some would appreciate an exact time so there ya go.
"can one see well even in the back of the GA area?"
You can see in back of the ga area fine but its better the closer you are. Dont worry about getting there early, just do what i did and get there around 10 mins before 9 and shove your way up to the front.
Posted by Anonymous | April 29, 2008 10:43 AM
They sounded good, but man, that last song didn't sit well with me. Too dancey for a "rock" band, and a horrible sample.
Posted by Anonymous | April 29, 2008 10:44 AM
Great show. I would've preferred more Storm In Heaven material than Urban Hymns, but that's a minor quibble. Already There, Come On, Gravity Grave and The Rolling People sounded amazing. Even one of the new songs, Sit And Wonder, came across as a future psychedelic classic.
Posted by Anonymous | April 29, 2008 10:47 AM
Don't listen to Anon 10:43 AM.
Get there by 9pm...
Posted by Anonymous | April 29, 2008 10:49 AM
did the dj beat up any anonymous commentators for LOL?
Posted by Anonymous | April 29, 2008 10:50 AM
i loved the entire set right up until that final new song. it'd be fine and all if not for that awful, awful sample.
man, they were so good. so so so good.
Posted by holmes | April 29, 2008 10:54 AM
"did the dj beat up any anonymous commentators for LOL?"
yes...right after daft punk went on.
Posted by Anonymous | April 29, 2008 10:56 AM
the show was pretty great...however...
WORST ENCORE EVER!
Posted by Anonymous | April 29, 2008 10:56 AM
I thought the sound in GA was terrible. Sounded much better in the seats.
Posted by Anonymous | April 29, 2008 10:58 AM
christ, it wasn't 9:00 pm, it was "9:05" pm?? Thanks so much for that snivelly correction dude.
Posted by Anonymous | April 29, 2008 11:01 AM
Hate to repeat but a totally respectable show overall, although I too would have loved more "Storm In Heaven" material (or at least "Man Called Sun"). Funny how the bass player Simon has now seemed to take over the silent-screaming cheerleading role from Ashcroft now that he's become more of a guitar man. But for the love of all that's right in the world...LOSE THAT FUCKIN' SAMPLE in that new song "Love Is Pain" or retitle the track "This Sample Is Pain!"
Posted by Anonymous | April 29, 2008 11:04 AM
10:43, what is the EXACT length of your insecurity?
Posted by Anonymous | April 29, 2008 11:05 AM
show was great...sound man sucked though...mix in the beginning was WAY hot and everyone was up too loud...then he got it great by 4th song...and then F-ed it up again
Posted by Anonymous | April 29, 2008 11:10 AM
i'd like to thank everyone here for waiting until they dropped the price, bought the cheap seats in the back, complained they didn't play enough off storm in heaven and pined for tapes n' tapes to come back.
please don't come back tonight. GA thanks you.
carry on.
Posted by Tony the Drummer | April 29, 2008 11:20 AM
@Tony The Drummer: Well for one, I bought my tickets full price the first day they went on sale, was in the GA section dancing my ass off, fucking hate Tapes N' Tapes and will be there again tonight STILL wanting more Storm In Heaven. Now...YOU carry on.
Posted by Anonymous | April 29, 2008 11:23 AM
@11:23 - Were you the guy in the back left who was stammering around ala Tyson/Buster Douglas?
And where was everyone in March 06 at webster?
Storm in Heaven is rough tho... call a spade a spade. the northern soul title track > anything on ASH...
Posted by Tony the Drummer | April 29, 2008 11:41 AM
They were amazing. They ot on stageat 9:05 but the DJ played the into around 9pm.
He did indee suck and his playlst was awful.
Also take into consideation tha the volume level was very loud, so war earplugs if you are going to the pit section. My ears are till ringing from last night.
Overall a great show, and they sounded very good live.
Posted by Anonymous | April 29, 2008 11:43 AM
tony the drummer you are completely clueless. a storm in heaven is the best record verve ever did, followed closely by the b-sides record. everything else has too many crappy richard ashcroft songs. the band was much better when the drugs were working. 'already there' and 'gravity grave' were the highlights of the night by far. nice to see nick back in the band. the dude shreds hard.
Posted by jeff | April 29, 2008 11:47 AM
Are the seats in the 300 sections just horrible? I'm thinking of going but if it is too far away or the sound is bad back there, I'm not sure it is worth it.
Posted by Marv | April 29, 2008 11:49 AM
Alright Jeff, if it wasn't for Mr. Ashcroft, the lads would still be playing shoegazer music in a basement. With that said, they both need each other.
Already there was painful. Gravity grave is a classic.
Urban Hymns is a bonafide classic - you can't even argue that. You didn't enjoy Come On last night?
Posted by Tony the Drummer | April 29, 2008 11:56 AM
@Tony The Drummer: Are you one of those post "Urban Hymns" stadium only fans? Do you even know that the band used to just be called "Verve"? Ever even heard of a track called "All In The Mind"?
Posted by Anonymous | April 29, 2008 11:57 AM
Please, I have a tatoo on my upper back that says This Is Music. I own the Voyager 1 live EP. I saw Richard - acoustic at the Bowery during Alone with Everybody. I'm fully aware of the "Verve" lawsuit. And in terms of Verve v. Oasis, Verve's All in the mind beats oasis, but Oasis wins on slide away.
Anything else?
Posted by Tony the Drummer | April 29, 2008 12:00 PM
Excellent show! I agree, "Man Called Sun" would've been the coup de gras, but I was happy with what they played (except for the last song.. it'd better w/o the sample).
Funny thing, though - I was sitting in the 202 section when this chick just passed the fuck out right in the aisle when they played "The Drugs Don't Work".. her beau tried to lug her to the back but that cute lil' sack of drunk, dead weight was too much for him, I guess. So they layed there for a while, then she upchucks up dinner, and security asks them to move.. a few minutes later they do, somehow. Shortly thereafter the MSG vomit-clean-up squad shows up and lays this fruity powder stuff (MUCH better smelling than the orange sawdust of grade school) on her chunder, sweeps it into a pan, and they're gone. The whole think took less than 30 seconds.
I guess that's what the high ticket prices pay are paying for.

Tony the Drummer. Are you Tony McCarroll?
Gravity Grave at Glasto 93 is as good as music gets. Here's hoping they do it tonight.
Posted by Anonymous | April 29, 2008 12:13 PM
i bet if they played Terminal 5 they would have gone on at like 9:13.
Posted by jim | April 29, 2008 12:15 PM
"Already there was painful."
This statement is painful. That was the highlight of the evening.
"Verve's All in the mind beats oasis, but Oasis wins on slide away."
So a generic, bland song beats an ambient, psychedelic masterpiece? That's hilarious.

No, both are great. Oasis' is just a bit better.

Hardy har!!
Good record. Just not the masterpiece some people would have you believe. Oasis are a fine band. But The Verve has put out a lot more memorable material.
Posted by Anonymous | April 29, 2008 12:40 PM
I'm also of the opinion A Storm in Heaven is the best thing they ever did. They sort of turned into Oasis after that... though I did kinda like that first Ashcroft solo record. But gimmie the druggy space jams.
Posted by bill p | April 29, 2008 12:48 PM
did they play that bitter symphony song that i hear on adverts?
that song is awesome
Posted by Anonymous | April 29, 2008 12:59 PM
@Anon12:59: Please say that you're just trying to rile people up. It's "BitterSWEET Symphony," yes they did it (see the setlist above) and finally...do your homework and check out the band's back catalog of even better material...again...unless you're just kidding.
Posted by Anonymous | April 29, 2008 1:16 PM
I thought they were unbelievable. What a tight band. Nick McCabe really does shred hard. And their drummer really killed it too, especially on the last song, which I enjoyed. I wish there had been more hardcore Verve fans there that knew more about the band than Bittersweet, but whatever. I can't wait to see them again.
Posted by Evan | April 29, 2008 2:49 PM
I hate to add to the complaints...but...I was a Verve fanatic and never missed a NYC show and I felt last night was very disappointing. Too much Vervecroft for me. I'm going tonight as well and I'm hoping for less ballads (Sonnet is #$%@! garbage!!!) and more A Storm in Heaven, A Northern Soul or early singles. Way too much Urban Hymns last night. But I guess they are playing to the MSG crowd, oh yeah, what a crappy venue by the way. I hope they come back around in the fall and play somewhere at least halfway acceptable. Yeah, Simon Jones has a new zest for life, eh? Strange to see them more animated (even Nick waved and bowed down to the crowd a few times). If only they'd play variations of their winter UK set lists - All in the Mind, Let the Damage Begin - that would be amazing! Doubt it though.
Posted by sj | April 29, 2008 2:59 PM
Oh yeah, "Love is Pain" is aweful Verve-disco. Hope they ditch that one. "Sit and Wonder" is a great new oldy (originally from their past collection of songs).
Posted by sj | April 29, 2008 3:03 PM
Uhm.......like isn't it obvious that A Storm in Heaven is there best album? Uhm.....Whoever doesn't think that and uhm.....wouldn't want to hear more of that at these concerts is an absolute idiot. i'm going tonight and hope they break some more out.
Rock on
Posted by Robbie | April 29, 2008 3:16 PM
Worst thing about the show last night other than the lousy final song was that they stopped pouring beers way too early. Plus there were way too many frat kids and teenie boppers there. The band should start playing 21+ only shows. Cut out the kiddies.
But beyond that, they sounded fantastic. Wanted more from Northern Soul but A New Decade, History, Life's An Ocean , and This Is Music were all superb. A New Decade was a bit fuzzy and the sound was scorching but it still came off great.
Definitely too much Urban Hymns but none-the-less an exceptional show. Would love to see them rock a small club rather than a larger venue. Wamu's just too sterile.
Posted by Dave | April 29, 2008 3:21 PM
I saw someone mentioned 'the freshmen.' .....does that song even qualify for quotes?
anyway, the doorman at my hotel asked where we were going. I said to see the verve and he said oh yeah I know them, they sing that song 'the freshmen.' I was like 'yeah man, that's them.'

I thought the show was great...sure I would of loved to hear Slide Away or Blue or Make it till Monday...but honestly...I'm just happy I was able to see them again. I would of even like to have heard So Sister. I saw them 10 years ago at Hammerstein. Gravity Grave was awesome, so was Life's an Ocean. - You're right, there were so many people that only knew a few songs...but look at it this way...the concert was better for fans like us since we knew every song.
Thanks for the set list!

Just came back from the second night. Amazing show.
Posted by Anonymous | April 30, 2008 12:17 AM
just got back from tonight's show and it was really great, looks to me like the set list was about the same as Monday, altho no "History" in the encore. Place was totally packed, the 300's looked full--maybe those 1/2 price tix finally filled it up? They sounded totally tight and my only complaint was the light show, I may be getting old but damn there was too much disco strobing for me. Sure hope there were no epileptics in the audience.
Posted by Anonymous | April 30, 2008 12:24 AM
I thought they were really good. the argument of which album is better is really moot. What I always dug about the verve is how they have three great lps tht all have different sounds. When they did "gravity grave" the place went nuts and "already there" was great too.
But to me the best song was "history". The lack of strings and McCabe sorta playing the motif with feedback gave it a real understated feel and thought sounded better than the original.
"Life's an Ocean" was a surprise too. I wish they had done "Slide Away", "Velvet Morning" and "So It Goes" to me three of their best. "A Man called Sun" would have been cool too. I saw them in Atlanta back in 08 before Nick bolted and they toured with some slide guitarist and they played it.
Also in juxtaposing the times I saw them (Lolapalooza the time before Atl) they seemed most comfortable around each other and more like a band instead of four guys trying to be rock stars. There was a underlined humility in their chemistry; as if they really were enjoying themselves, ironically like when I saw the police in concert last year. I think the two bands are very similar in that so much ego and genius will burn you out fast. Had they been a band back then we'd have a few more albums to remember them by I'm sure.
And as far as the new songs never in all my years of seeing bands live, never have I dug hearing one for the first time so I will hold my judgement until the album drops, but it is pretty ballsy ending a show with one They have been better off swith "Come On" with it...
Posted by Dave | April 30, 2008 12:29 AM
just got back from the Tuesday show myself. as a solid shoegazer and fan of the Verve since A Storm in Heaven (yes I know about the EP, sue me) I felt there was something missing with the performance tonight. I couldn't help but feel the band was just a half-step and at times a whole step behind their true form in their glory days. maybe they're too old for some of these songs and need to do something new, like Radiohead has been doing. who knows. I just hope they don't reinvent themselves with that annoying dance-rock song they ended with "Love is Pain". what a pain that song was.
I also think the show would have been a lot better had someone blocked off the GW Bridge, Lincoln Tunnel, Path and LIRR. there were just too many morons in the crowd. I'd forgotten that the Verve really were that popular. Some serious guido action, iBanker, lawyer crowd dancing as well... (why do white fratboy, ibankers bother to dance? they look so stupid doing it. just stop embarrassing yourselves guys and stay home or hang out at Applebees instead. jackasses).
the sound in that place is terrible. you could barely maket out Nick McCabe's effects. I was in the GA area. GA was best toward the back. MSG sucks. I got sick of suit and tie dumbass security everywhere.
Posted by MadRichard | April 30, 2008 1:08 AM
my god, what a load of whinging in these comments. be happy they decided to get back together and bring the sound back. If you wanted to hear a live performance of Storm in Heaven you needed to see them in 1993, not 2008.
And if you think 21 and over will keep the pricks out, dream on.
compare this to the last ny show and there's no question as to which was best. bj ward does not exactly hold a candle to nick mccabe.
i only could have wished it was at webster hall.
Captain Rock is back!

25 comments on the mighty Vegan- the power of an amazing rock and roll band- imagine that. They don't come around that often- most stay for 15 minutes. This one has made 3 timeless classics- and one more is coming- The Christians were right all along.
Posted by wigansburg | April 30, 2008 1:46 AM
Well, I saw them Monday in GA and thought they were pretty bad (sounded awful, poor set list, etc), but tonight, Tuesday, was great. We sat in the middle (section 200) and enjoyed a much better sound. I guess it is sad that the such bands play the theater at MSG. If they only knew how we felt... I hate this venue, but felt that, from my vantage point on Tuesday, that the sounded great. Basically, Monday and Tuesday together generated one good Verve show (Gravity Grave, Life's an Ocean, This is Music, Already There, A Man Called Sun, etc). Less Urban Hymns on Tuesday (thankfully), and Sit and Wonder was great and, as all have said, Love is Pain is bloody awful. I hope they realize that it sucks and drop it from the new album. Wow, shitty sample and sound!!! Though great set and sound on Tuesday night overall. After Monday night I was dreading the second show, but they pulled it. ...boys...just don't play that crappy venue ever again... ...come back and play Let the Damage Begin...
Posted by sj | April 30, 2008 2:37 AM
@si: Wait a minute...they played "A Man Called Sun" Tuesday night??? Nobody else has mentioned that. And when you say "less Urban Hymns," what tracks did they play instead? Also, I had GA for Monday night and for the first time in my life wish I had a seated ticket instead of pit due to the overly distorted, hot sound in GA. Oh well...I'll take distorted Verve over 95% of other bands sounding their absolute fucking best any day.
Someone...Tuesday night setlist please.
Posted by Anonymous | April 30, 2008 7:21 AM
Hey 1:08. Yeah dude, i bankers and lawyers have no right to see the Verve. Neither do people from outside the city. They should just screen people at the door and deny them entry so that only true fans such as yourself can bust your kick ass dance moves and impress the shit out of all of the other "real" fans. Better yet, they should just kill off those guido banker fratboy bastards. I'm sure Mr. Ashcroft would agree.
Posted by Anonymous | April 30, 2008 8:53 AM
I think alot of the time at a venue it has to do with the type of music and the sound man, most of the time not specifically the venue. Justice sounded great at Wamu. I think all the levels were just way too high. I was in 201 like 10th row or so and the sound was pretty bad for the first 2-3 songs then it pretty much leveled out for the rest of the show with a few hot spots here and there. Come on guys its a rock show, loosen up a little and have fun. Show was great, I'm not a die hard Verve fan although I do think they are an above average band and would probably check them out any time they come to town. My girl loves them so she was very happy and I'm glad we went the first night because History is her favorite song. As for the last song, it's not the best but these guys have always kind of experimented in there music, the song will probably get skipped on CD, but I thought it sounded good to dance/jump around to live. Gravity Grave/Rolling People was the highlight for me. Sliiiiidddeeeee AAWwwwwaaaayyyyyy. BTW this is the DJ's myspace

Anon 8:53 a.m. you're absolutely correct. Guido bankers and fratboy fags ruin a good time. On Monday night a bunch of frat fags came into the bathroom all shouting 'who let the dogs out.' That's a fantastic anthem for a Verve show. They'd be better of spending time at the WWF or truck/tractor pull. People like that create a bad time for others with their drunken obnoxious behavior. It's too bad there's no way to screen people like that out, I'd be all for it.
Posted by Anonymous | April 30, 2008 10:11 AM
People keep name dropping "Slide Away" and "Man Called Sun" in Tuesday night reports. Did they do these songs? They sure as hell didn't on Monday night. Will somebody please post a Tuesday night setlist. Thx.
Posted by Anonymous | April 30, 2008 10:13 AM
Yes to a Man called Sun on Tuesday night. Negative on slide away however... pretty similar set list last night. Velvet morning was played, history wasnt...No gravity grave last night either. I think that's about it...
Posted by Tony the Drummer | April 30, 2008 10:18 AM
They didn't play "Slide Away" on Tuesday, but Simon (the basist) alluded to it by playing the intro in-between songs. I was really excited for about 5 seconds until he stopped. They definitely played "Man Called Sun". It sounded good but McCabe's effects were washed out in the PA.
Part of me thinks the venue was the main problem. It's situated right on top of the Path and LIRR, perfect nexus for guido, fratboy action. They should have played the Bowery for two sold out weeks . Even the Hammerstein would have been better than MSG.
Posted by MadRichard | April 30, 2008 10:19 AM
To Mad Richard (1.08am) and the whiners about the crowd last night. If you are such a true shoegazer, why does it bother you so much the way that other people look and dance? Shouldn't you just be gazing at your shoes through your floppy hair?
Last night was amazing. They didn't play Gravity Grave and I've been following this thread so I was hoping they would play it. I'll admit I love all their albums. For so many different reasons. Last night, Already There was amazing. So was Come On. They didn’t play Slide Away or History. Two song encore, Bittersweet and finished with the new dance song.
I had seats in 203 but tried to get into GA. They wouldn’t let me in. I stood at the front of the seats as they played Rolling People and was moved on by the security guards (and seated front rowers) about 6 times in 3 minutes. But Ashcroft was mesmerizing and with tears welling up, and fists clenching, all I wanted to do was jump the rope to get down closer. This is fucking music. I ended up standing in the aisle a few rows up for the rest of the show. Still great.
I think if you are a fan of any era of the band you will have found something to love last night. Even if you only know Bittersweet Symphony from a little league baseball game, you would have gone home happy. And what’s wrong with that?
I also don’t live in Manhattan so according to these people ^^, I should have been banned from going. And lawyers should be banned too? Twats. Don’t you get it? It’s about music and how it makes you feel. Not how other people look and dance. Oops sorry, where’s my BV handbook? Shit, a rule 1A violation.
Anyway first time I saw The Verve they broke up on stage (Glasgow 1994). I think they’ll be around for a bit longer this time. If you don’t like the sound of that, or of me - stay home and gaze at your fucking shoes.

It's a shame that the 30 second experience in the bathroom ruined the show for you.
You know, I'd love to hand pick the folks who are surrounding me at a concert. Given I'm a white athletic guy who works in finance, I'm sure you'd be happy to see me turned away at the door. But in my experience, for every lawyer/banker/fratboy at these concerts there's at least one whiny hipster douchebag pouting with his arms crossed because the band is not impressing him enough.
I'd be pleased to surround myself with people who are having fun, and who are dancing even if their dance moves aren't up to the standards of some hipster snob. But unfortunately you can't always get what you want.

I made the comment about this thread being at least 75 percent British people commenters, because this is one of the most articulate bunch of posts, like people who can use "juxtapose" in a sentence? wow.
One of the few recent threads where actual music was discussed as well, and not just stupid back and forth yelling.

Attention guido/finance/ibanker/lawyers. we "true" ; ) original Verve shoegazer fans do not mean to offend your taste and Sensibility. However, your presence at these shows is frustrating for me personally because the Verve were definitely a coming-of-age band for me, they weren't popular and you definitely didn't "dance" and shake your hips to their music while double-fisting Budlights.
If music were 100% about one's "feelings" then it sounds you would be just as happy at swaying your Dow Jones swaying fratboy hips at an effing Hannah Montana concert. It shows you have no objectivity or taste when it comes to music. That's why you can say no wrong about the Verve's performance last night. anything with a good beat is enough for your taste so drunk dance away and look out for Hannah Montana.

MadRich 1050am... +5 points for Dow Jones and Hannah Montana in the same sentence. (+25 point if you would have been able to link Dow Chemical and the Olsen Twins, but the verve will be back in the fall. start working)
Anyway, The Wombats have been added to the Virgin Festival in Toronto (Oasis, stereophonics, weller, pigeon detectives et all).
That is what we call in the business as a Fun Day. You remember Fun? Like how music = Fun?
Aah, don't bother. I'm sure there will be something good at Southpaw that night.

OK, my Verve bonafides are solid, if not exceptional. Fan since 1992 or so, seen them four times now, including Tuesday night, and no I am not a guido/banker/frat boy, just a humble, married grad student who lives in Manhattan. That said, I'm not a holier than thou rock snob (at least anymore!) I was in the GA and agree that the sound was a bit overwhelming although after three songs or so it seemed to even out a bit. I actually thought the GA crowd was fine; no one was acting like an oaf and people danced without being drunk and obnoxious, so far as I could tell. This seemed to me a great show if perhaps short of legendary, but think how high our standards are for this band. Three proper albums and are all classic while still sounding fresh more than 10 years later. That's no small thing. Would have loved The Sun, The Sea however.

MadRich. You seem to know everything about us. Tell us about yourself.
1. Where do you live that is cool?
2. What do you do for a living that is cool?
3. What cool stuff do you do at a show if you dont dance or sway?
4. What is your cool drink of choice?
5. Define objectivity v taste in music?
6. Who is Hannah Montana? I've never heard of her.

I apologize for being judgmental earlier. I hadn't had my caffeine yet after a late night.
But if you'd like me to define "cool," here I go. This is what I remember as "cool." Coming home from a school (dominated by thoughtless, senseless, judgmental future fratboy lawyer /ibanker jackasses who all listened to shite music) and learning to play "Slide Away" on my guitar and bass or listening to "History" in my room and looking over the album liner photo of Ashcroft lying in bed with an ashtray just as the lyrics "the bed ain't made, but it's filled full of hope, I've got a skinful of dope" hit the speaker. It was cool being able to "own" that music and those experiences as my own, setting me apart in some special way from the guidos I grew up with.
I’ll tell you what else was “cool.” Before the age of YouTube and Pitchtfork.tv, I somehow got in touch with Verve fans in San Francisco. It was such a rare thing to be fan of the Verve back then and really hard to get a hold of live bootlegs and live video. One fan in SF went so far as to dub an entire 2-hour tape of live footage and mail it to me free of charge across the country only because she cared so much about the music and the fans. That was pretty “cool.”
So it just kind of sucks a little now to go to a Verve show and see those same jackass fratboy finance, ibanker/lawyer professionals swaying their senseless, rhythmless hips to every Verve song in the same effing way, bud light in hand… as if it somehow diminishes those earlier memories. But I understand that I shouldn’t be so possessive. It’s great that the Verve appeal to a broader audience now. I just personally find the rhythmless hip swaying a tad annoying. You guys should practice in a mirror before the show... : )

@Mad Richard: You're going to continue to catch hell on this thread but, that being said, I partially relate to your "ownership" sentiment over bands like Verve that have touched and made a permanent imprint on your life, ESPECIALLY pre-MySpace/Hot Topic/YouTube. The problem is, for better or for worse, older people like you and I have to dump that way of thinking. Special music just isn't a "secret" for music geeks like you and I anymore. That's just the way it is. I for one am trying my damdest to embrace it. I don't want to sound like the people who were cursing that darn, new-fangled TV that was going to kill going to the movies, or those scary automobiles that meant I couldn't ride my horse anymore. Let's face it Mad Richard...it's a New Decade.

Blah blah everything was great in '92.

The interwebs is ruining music.

Setlist for night 2 anyone?

Mad Rich
I don’t take your judgments personally. And I understand your extremely personal connection with this band. And I respect it. And that to see these people wearing suits and name-brand underpants, and thrusting hips and budweisers somehow cheapens or diminishes your connection with The Verve. It’s probably not unlike seeing your first teenage girlfriend/boyfriend 15 years later, being shagged by 4 dudes in a porn film.
But there have been lots of people who have had their moments of passion with our band since then. I'm one of them. It was back in 1994, so a little after you, but that’s ok. I always knew there had been others before me. And there have been many since. But we're still friends now.
And if the Verve didn’t like being shagged by these lawyers/bankers right now, they wouldn’t play MSG. And if it wasn’t for these dudes, let’s be honest, they probably wouldn’t have got back together.
So here's to seeing them later this year in a smaller venue, once they've settled down to a monogamous relationship with all their fans. I'll buy you this drink that we can unashamedly thrust at the band together – www.verve.com

I see where you're coming from MadRich but sometimes you have to face the reality of the situation here. I started listening to the Verve when Urban Hymns was released. It was the first and only Verve album I've owned. And I've listened it literally hundreds of times over the last ten years. But that doesn't mean that "true" fans are any more entitled than I am to enjoy a live performance from the Verve. And although I'm a white, athletic financial analyst who was only 10 years old when the band got together, I had a damn good time at the show, and could care less if people disliked my dancing.

They didn't play Gravity Grave on Tuesday night. wish they had.

I was at the Tuesday show and thought it was GREAT! I've been a fan since the early 90's and have been waiting years to see these guys. I enjoyed it ALL!
If anyone has a Northern Soul, a Storm in Heaven or Urban Hymns on----VINYL---- I would pay a good price for all three. i've been trying to get my hands on all three for awhile now.with no luck. my email is jpc912@hotmail.com
Thanks!

They played "Velvet Morning" and "Man Called Sun"??? Damn I should have went the second night!
Still "History" was amazing on Monday they way the did it...also I don't get the shoegazer fans you guys act like the band just changed their sound two days ago. I mean if you are a fan of "Storm" only why would you bother going to a show two albums after and ten years after they broke up??? Seems like you just want to bitch. I'm just glad they are back together and personally they probably are still shaking the dust off in many ways.
Now only if Blur would get back together...

okay stop fighting. the dude says hes got a "this is music" tatto on his back, (kinda gay) but I think he has every right to say what he feels about the verve without someone questioning wether or not hes a devoted fan.
I dont agree with him bringing Oasis into it, without the verve giving them a leg up, by bringing them on tour with them in the early stages. they dont even compare!
The Verve is one of the most talented bands in the world, they're music is a prime example of perfect harmony. Mccabe is amazing and sure without him there could be no Verve... but its Ashcrofts lyrics and vocals that brings everything together.
I don't understand why anyone would question his abilities to bring the sound together. the band and all of The Verves die hards know that this is Richards band!
i just want to argue the whole "Vervecroft" issue someone brought up. the man is brilliant! as a Huuuge Verve fan im happy to see him utilizing his vocals and lyrics in songs like lucky man. Trust me, i erk when i hear someone call the verve a one hit wonder... GRRR i just want to slap em out! but as a fan maybe suggest.. A Storm in Heaven?? or even an album like A Northern Soul?? full of many singles released in the UK.... Don't fucking bash Ashcroft!
Okay i got hooked listening to A Nothern Soul, that by far to me is the best Verve album. wich album do i listen to most? a stom in heaven.... (Hey my friends we gonna make it till monday!)
but they still didn't have that Album that proved they're status as one of the greatest bands of all time, that happened with the release of Urban Hymns, your stupid if you can't apreciate that album as a whole, if you enjoy the sound The Verve offers!
Jeeeesus! am i the only one who bought all of Ashcrofts records and loved it all? hes a fucking man on a mission!
cant compare to any Verve stuff, but its because hes developed as a songwriter, and Mccabe's been aparently practicing.. that The Verve is back together.... THANKYOU LORD!!!! stop being over critical douchebags! especially when you have no idea.
IM GOING TO THEY'RE SHOW TONIGHT IN TORONTO!!!
wish me luck!!

I went both nights and was absolutely blown away to pieces!!!
Verve rules! It can't be said enough.
Posted by Anonymous | May 4, 2008 2:50 PM
how the heck did they not do "On Your Own"? either night?
Carry on verve.
Posted by Anonymous | May 4, 2008 3:56 PM
@Adam Carbone: Hope you enjoyed the Toronto show but I think 99% of the posters on this comment thread clearly "have an idea" and are obviously obsessive Verve fans just like you. You're not the only one bro...I'm just sayin'.

"This song was going to be on our first record but was the b-side on our first single. Went to the studio on Tuesday, dropped acid on Wesdnesday and recorded the song on Thursday. There's a lesson there-don't drop acid on a Wednesday."
