BANG ON A CAN MARATHON
Returning to the Winter Garden for a third year, the Bang on a Can Marathon has redefined what contemporary music is, how it is performed and where it is presented. This year, as a co-presentation with arts>World Financial Center, BoaC stages a 12-hour torrent of mind-boggling, genre-bending music. A continuous stream of pioneering artists from around the globe will take the stage in the Winter Garden for a musical adventure. The Bang on a Can Marathon begins Saturday night at 6pm and continues to 6am on Sunday, so come and go as you like or stay all night long.

Creating a sound that meanders between shoegazer and dance, yet demonstrating his skill at songwriting for electronic music, Berlin-based artist Schnauss opens arts > WFC’s summer season. Chrysler beguiles with her unique brand of vocal and theremin, and is accompanied by media artist Watanabe’s video projections. FREE.

DJing the Winter Garden’s first dance party, Kode 9’s set travels through a selection of dancehall-influenced, bass-heavy skank, currently referred to as grime and dubstep. Special guests include MC Juakali and DJ Dave Q and host of NYC’s Dub War events and VJ collective Eyewash provides the visuals. FREE.

JÓHANN JÓHANNSSON
Performing for the first time in the US, Jóhann Jóhannsson is an Icelandic musician, composer, producer and an active member of the country’s artistic community (as the founder of the Kitchen Motors and member of Apparat Organ Quartet). His stately and hauntingly melodic music has been quietly bewitching listeners for some time and this concert featuring a string quartet and visual projections is sure to expand his audience still further. BRAZILIAN CONNECTION QUINTET
Celebrating a rich and diverse legacy, this unique concert brings together several of the greatest and most in-demand players of Brazilian and jazz music lead by the dynamic drummer and percussionist Duduka Da Fonseca, and featuring vocalist Maucha Adnet, Klaus Mueller on piano, Jorge Continentino playing saxophone & flute, and bassist Nilson Matta. For its U.S. premiere, Christian Fennesz and Ryuichi Sakamoto will perform from their 2007 album, Cendre. This live collaboration creates a new synergy between acoustic piano and electronic and electric guitar music. Fennesz’ sensitive, ambient soundscapes balance and manipulate Sakamoto’s elegant piano phrasing, creating vivid dialogues between melody and texture, exploring the idea of electronic music as an inspiration for new musical structures. On the stage or in the studio, Hebden and Reid create an abstract sound that incorporates elements of hip-hop, electronica, jazz, and folk music with live drumming & percussion. Opening the show, Collins and his band perform Devil’s Music, an improvised work using samples of live radio.

Culminating a week-long celebration of Johnny Cash, several of New York City’s premiere singer-songwriters gather to cover gems from Cash’s songbook. Featured guests include Ollabelle, Benevento/Russo Duo, Laura Cantrell, Catherine Russell, and The Persuasions, among many others.

THE HYPERBOLIC CROCHET CORAL REEF

Institute For Figuring
Bursting forth in a colorful panoply of “kelps”, “corals” and “anemones,” this crocheted homage to Earth’s endangered coral reefs is a beautiful marriage of traditional arts & crafts and hyperbolic geometry. This exhibition, featuring The New York Reef and The Chicago Reef, raises awareness about these disappearing marine treasures.
