WOW. Malkmus and BSS

Cool. Annuals is the only band I dislike. The rest range from awesome to listenable.

"Cool. Annuals is the only band I dislike. The rest range from awesome to listenable"
as long as you are happy.

wow this lineup sucks, just like it has in the past two years.

"wow this lineup sucks, just like it has in the past two years."
wow it took a whole 4 comments for that stereotypical comment to appear!

i thought this festival was done with last year? anyway, does anyone know if this is actually THE bss or a tiny version like the one that played the pool last year? and i hope helio sequence starts to get noise-filled again and knocks off the pretty strumming and sing/song bullshite that's on their new one. there are so many hipster-folkies who can have that game.
Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2008 12:10 PM
It was awful last year, and the sound was bad(the only good thing was Matt and Kim)...glad I'll be in Chicago for Pitchfork instead.
Posted by Tom | May 7, 2008 12:10 PM
Dragons of Zynth suck. The rest is sem-decent at least.
Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2008 12:12 PM
Dragons of Zynth are beyond terrible. Really bad.
Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2008 12:13 PM
Film School were amazing at the Mercury Lounge last week.
Posted by Dan | May 7, 2008 12:15 PM
These Are Powers is the worst band on the planet.
God fucking awful.
Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2008 12:16 PM
It's already better than last year, but that's not saying much
Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2008 12:16 PM
great lineup. too bad the sound always sucks and coney is full of tools.
Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2008 12:16 PM
What's with BV not linking to the official site?

These Are Powers were not that great opening for Man Man. I loved early Liars and No Things, but TAP just weren't good.
Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2008 12:18 PM
this is an awesome lineup...too bad im not interested in hanging on hot blacktop all day.
Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2008 12:22 PM
much better lineup than last year's and the best thing about it is...it's free
Posted by hipster poseur | May 7, 2008 12:23 PM
It's a fucking free show people. Don't go if you are a miserable person who likes to complain about how terrible the line-up is.
Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2008 12:28 PM
"(the only good thing was Matt and Kim)...glad I'll be in Chicago for Pitchfork instead."
[fart]
Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2008 12:29 PM
Really. Its fucking Malkmus, people. For FREE.
They could have a six hour These Are Powers set followed by Malkmus and it would still be worth it.
Well maybe not, but you know what I mean.
Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2008 12:31 PM
hahahaha
TAP are amazing!
Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2008 12:33 PM
"Really. Its fucking Malkmus, people."
Have you heard the last Malkmus album? Don't be so quick with the enthusiasm.
Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2008 12:35 PM
If they're not going to feature only bands that I enjoy, I don't see what the point of the whole thing is anyways. I am personally offended that I was not consulted. What the fuck Village Voice! You suck. Another thing why Coney Island of all places? Wouldn't this show be more convenient for me if it were at least SOMEWHERE in the vicinity of the Haptons, where I'll be vacationing that week? Seriously, way to drop the ball, fucktards.
Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2008 12:35 PM
what, no fucking yeah yeah yeahs?
well... malkmus and beach house, yeah!
Posted by rocked the shit | May 7, 2008 12:36 PM

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2008 12:38 PM
People will hate on anything. Why bother bitching about a free festival? What's the point?
And thank you anon 12:05, I am happy.
Posted by feedbacker | May 7, 2008 12:39 PM
Is this BSS or BSS presents Brendan Canning or BSS presents Kevin Drew or BSS presents Grover from Sesame Street
Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2008 12:40 PM
"what, no fucking yeah yeah yeahs?"
So far, Siren has never had the same band twice.
I don't mind seeing bands that I do not like, but DoZ are bad.
Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2008 12:42 PM
DMZ were great, though.
Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2008 12:45 PM
what, no santagold/mia/obama-phone?!
Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2008 12:46 PM

But its free , and I'll meet some cheesy bitches that day , so its all good ..
Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2008 4:13 PM
Yes! The artwork is great, as usual.
But that Siren chick.. man, she's on the prowl for some ass to kick. Bruce Ratner maybe.
Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2008 4:25 PM
Dragons of Zynth are garbage as is Malkmus' last album but I will still be glad to see him + BSS + Beach House for free.

Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2008 6:50 PM
Always too many idiots in the crowd.
Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2008 7:02 PM
what? No third eye blind?
Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2008 7:28 PM
Last year it was hard for me to enjoy MIA's set because the hipster version of Rosanne and Tom Arnold infront of me were pigging out on meat
the whole time. That was when they were not making out.It was just gross. There should be a ban on bringing Popeyes meat to the festival. And of ugly people making out.
Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2008 7:58 PM
best lineup in years
Posted by Anonymous | May 7, 2008 8:50 PM
dragons of zynth's album was pretty interesting.

Posted by Anonymous | May 8, 2008 3:42 AM
wow that's a hell of a lot better than last year.
Posted by Mandy | May 8, 2008 5:47 AM
Holy god. The first summer in a decade that I won't be in NYC, and Siren finally delivers the goods. Thanks, Voice.
Posted by Anonymous | May 8, 2008 8:15 AM
In terms of suckage, Dragons of Zynth are worse than These Are Powers.
No lineup will ever be 100% good (again). The Voice in the past few years have been booking crappy local bands with barely an album under their belts (Morningwood anyone?) As long as there are a few decent bands, I will be going. Up until now, looks like Malkmus and BSS will be the headliners, still room for more bands.
Still hard to believe BSS would headline. It was only a few years ago that they played a free show at Other Music and barely sold that out.
Posted by Anonymous | May 8, 2008 10:33 AM
gdamn that artwork is incredible.
yesss broken social scene rules!!! can't wait. get there early peeps... oh and don't climb on barbed wire fences.
Posted by Anonymous | May 8, 2008 10:37 AM
Popeyes meat?
I think they call that "chicken".
Posted by Anonymous | May 8, 2008 11:01 AM
thank god, maybe bss will make up for that shitty, sleep-induced stars performance in 2006.
Posted by Anonymous | May 8, 2008 11:11 AM
the term "Popeyes meat?" is simply fantastic.
Posted by Anonymous | May 8, 2008 11:25 AM
i hate to complain, b/c it's free... but i don't think there are any big draws there. i might go just go, but i don't care to see any bands. i feel like broken social scene are always playing free shows here. rather ho-hum line-up... but whatever. it's free. i don't have to go.
Posted by Anonymous | May 8, 2008 12:56 PM
I would prefer it if there were no big draws. Known groups = bigger crowds. Just don't give us crap like These Are Powers.
Posted by Anonymous | May 8, 2008 1:08 PM
These Are Powers = Popeyes meat
Posted by Anonymous | May 8, 2008 1:18 PM
It's really easy to be critical from the sidelines. - people who do that are not really adding anything to the conversation. It is much harder to actually pull off a free concert. I appreciate the effort that goes into this.

this is a great lineup.... any word on who the last two bands are going to be?
Posted by Anonymous | June 9, 2008 10:57 PM
islands and ra ra
Posted by Anonymous | June 18, 2008 11:43 AM
complain when your shit is worth while.
Posted by anonymous | June 18, 2008 2:35 PM
Yo,
dragons of zynth are so badddd. how many people did they get to drink the kool aid on that one cuz it tastes like poop.
Posted by RAD RAINS | June 18, 2008 5:20 PM
You cynical, spoiled, wanna be hipsters..it's a free show with Stephen freakin Malkmus...stop complaining. Your only post should be "Thank you Village Voice and Coney Island". If you dont like the line-up...don't go. It's so very easy. The rest of us who appreciate good, average, not so good and up and rising music, will be there shaking our boodies and nodding our heads.

You can see the footage I shot during BSS's set on my work blog:

I was able to be on stage so it's pretty close up.
