a new WIRE album & MP3, free show on Friday @ the Seaport

DOWNLOAD: Wire - One of Us (MP3)

Wire

Object 47 [the 47th object in Wire's discography] is nonetheless only Wire's 11th studio album. It is the 2nd product of an arc of work began in 2006 which has so far thrown up the rather well received EP, Read And Burn 03 [from which no tracks appear] and stands as a confident statement of where Wire are in 2008. As ever looking forward! While retaining Wire's idiosyncratic mix of an avant-garde mindset with classic pop timing this album boasts "tunes with zoom" a unique formula that somehow manages to sound wholly Wire [in a classic sense] and wholly contemporary.

Although Object 47 will not be released until July 7th, the first single, "One Of Us" is now available for download from pinkflag.com...
...and above. The first free show at South Street Seaport this summer is this Friday (May 30) (and Wire are playing it). All dates below....

Do they play any old songs live?

Posted by Anonymous | May 27, 2008 1:50 PM

I know I'm only asking for a bunch of Daft Punk jokes by posting this, but does anyone know what time bands usually go on at R2R shows? Will they take the stage at 7, or can I get there later?

"Do they play any old songs live?"

Unless they have changed things up their live shows are mostly Pink Flag and Chairs Missing era.

Posted by Anonymous | May 27, 2008 2:45 PM

i saw them in 2003...it was maybe 50% pink flag/chairs/154...and 50% new stuff...they understand people want to hear the old stuff.

love them

a show in manchester earlier this month they played The 15th, Lowdown, Boiling Boy, 12xU, 106 Beats That...

Their EP from last year was really really good. Margaret Fielder from Laika took over on bass after Bruce Gilbert quit the band in 2004.

As long as i can hear The 15th/Map Ref. 41N 93W/Outdoor Miner, i'll be happy

So looking forward to this show. I saw them on their return in 1999 @ The El Rey in Los Angeles and the last time they were in NYC for "Send" @ The Bowery Ballroom. It was nasty, angry, and truly exhilarating. Graham Lewis' deep growl was truly scary and Colin Newman's yelp was motivating. I listen to all of their output on a regular basis. Bruce Gilbert will be sorely missed. Isn't he still contributing in the studio, even though he is not touring?

so psyched for this. i agree that i need to hear "dot dash" live.

It was a great show! They did NOTHING from Pink Flag until the encore, but they did do some early stuff. For the encore they did LOWDOWN, IT'S SO OBVIOUS and REUTERS -- awesome! Actually the whole show was pretty awesome, even their new stuff! Good crowd too!

Posted by Jason | May 30, 2008 11:18 PM

They were wonderful, what a way to kick off the Seaport shows!

Posted by Anonymous | May 30, 2008 11:24 PM

Actually I saw them in 1979 at CB's and they were great then, but honestly they were every bit as good tonight!!

Posted by Jason | May 30, 2008 11:28 PM

Hmmm i hate to rain on the parade going on here. The show was very good and the band were good also but i have to take Jason's statement and dump on it. Umm dude, in all honesty how could you say there were every bit as good tonite as they were in 79. I didnt see them in 79 but i have seen them a number of times over the years and this was not as good. First of all, Wire playing without Bruce Gilbert is not Wire. If you argue that fact you are not a true Wire fan plain and simple. You can try to look like one by listing names of songs and albums but cmon now.

A couple of notes.
1)The sound system at the seaport could have been better and really hampered the bands performance.

2)Those lights were so fucking annoying but i guess that was cause i was up in front.

3) Does the photo pit at the seaport really have to be so damn big? The gates for the audience is so far back from the stage. Must they pay such deference to concert photographers who are annoying by trade.

4) And please for the love of christ i really hope you people who shout out things at the band or names of songs to play die a slow painful death.

Anyway, not a classic Wire show but good nonetheless

@1:23 regarding point #4: Dude...relax. It's not that heavy! Imagine all the shouting going on at early Wire shows when people really had punk energy.

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2008 10:10 AM

i could be wrong but it looked like blinda from my bloody valentine was on second guitar.

can anyone confirm this?

they sounded great.

Posted by tom | May 31, 2008 12:27 PM

^^^Only if Belinda had gained 50 pounds over the years heaven forbid. LOL! No...actually her name escapes me but she was an ex-member of the band Laika.

Well, as for the comparison with 1979, I suppose it's hard to compare 2 shows 29 years apart. And, yes, it would have been nice to have Bruce Gilbert, but I thought they were great last night nonetheless. As for the sound & lights, I actually thought they were very good (well the sound anyway). I was about halfway back - not up front. Maybe that's why. Also, if you want to dump on me, you should have brought up my unforgiveable gaffe: the last song was Pink Flag, NOT Reuters! My mistake. As for names of songs, actually I did NOT know many of them - I'm mostly familiar with Pink Flag and (to a lesser extent) their next couple. [and some of their later songs, like I Don't Understand, which was GREAT] So perhaps I'm not a "TRUE Wire fan" but I am a fan! And that WAS an awesome show!

Posted by Jason | May 31, 2008 4:21 PM

And the 2nd song in the encore was 1 2 X U.

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2008 5:33 PM

i left after 30 minutes, personally pissed at the lack of material from the early part of their career. obviously, they have a strong catalog and their impact has been felt for decades, but so fucking what?!! i really needed to hear a smattering of these songs earlier in the set.

quite honestly, it pissed me off.

they sounded great, if a little rusty and signing from lyric sheets from a laptop is not cool, but they lost me by not giving me something to satiate my need for chairs missing (etc.)

a word to describe the set: frustrating!

Posted by elbeam | May 31, 2008 8:36 PM

On Guitar...Margaret Fielder from Laika and Moonshake before that.

Posted by bill p | May 31, 2008 9:00 PM

12XU?? Hmm you may be right . . . I guess I'd had too many beers! Anyway, I was also a bit frustrated by the lack of early material (and stuff I knew); but to be honest I thought EVERY song was excellent. And they did redeem themselves with the encores. I mean for a free 1-hour plus show, you can't do much better. BTW Wire without Gilbert is less disappointing than Television without Richard Lloyd (last summer).
