Baby Dayliner - now with full band, 2 NYC shows, tonight

by Conrad

DOWNLOAD: Baby Dayliner - At Least (MP3)

Baby Dayliner

New York's own, one of a kind vocalist/producer/songwriter/MC/DJ/sometime-solo-performer Baby Dayliner put together a new full band over the winter; that band plays its second show tonight (May 22) at the Found Sound Launch Party at Southpaw with Wild Yaks and Himalaya.

Ethan Marunas aka Baby Dayliner is an interesting character. Ably mixing 80s David Bowie, Mellow Gold-era Beck (which BTW we think is the best Beck there is), the best pop standards from the 50s and 60s, David Byrne solo, some Morrissey AND cabaret, the NYC-native and one-man band has been going at his act strong for many years, all the while remaining something of a hyper-literate, hyper-addictive, brashly original artist. [The Culture Of Me]
If you miss the Southpaw show, Baby Dayliner and band are also playing June 21st at the Mercury Lounge.

Baby Dayliner RULES!!!

It's great to hear that there might be new music on the horizon.

This is truly horrible. Is this a joke? Put a lid on it dude.

this dude rules so hard.

it's like someone's grandmother doing Joy Division karaoke.

horrendous. shouldn't you have at least 1 muscle if you're going to wear a beater?

Baby Dayliner is AMAZING

Posted by Anonymous | May 22, 2008 2:33 PM

saw him a couple of times -- he needs to ditch the band and stick to just laptop and mic

Posted by Anonymous | May 22, 2008 2:36 PM

is this a joke?

This guy is rad. He should stick to the suitcase that has plugs built in and rocks out hard. Awesome.

Met him once. Thought he was a douchebag.

Posted by Anonymous | May 22, 2008 3:34 PM

You serious? I met him in Baltimore and he literally could not have been classier -- bought us drinks and gave us cds even though we already had them (he insisted). I think this guy has put out two of the best 50 albums of the past decade. I'm not even joking. Stephen Merritt puts out one of these albums and you would hear the sound of collective hipster jizzing from Mars. And I thought that before he literally charmed my pants off.

Baby Dayliner is sweet. Saw him open for the National in LA. "Critics Pass Away" is pretty great.

colossally bad

apparently has a great street team, though

Posted by Anonymous | May 22, 2008 8:42 PM

I highly doubt that Baby Dayliner has a street team (although I am very impressed by your usage of industry slang). Seriously, though -- some of you people are truly miserable. Brooklyn Vegan runs a great site here. He busts his butt to give a good product every single day -- every couple hours, really. Act like humans on the boards, okay? Think of how great the site could be if there were comments with substance to them, not just ripping on the girl from Mates of State's chins (she looks great, by the way). Baby Dayliner puts out great albums and delivers a unique, endearing live performance. If he is not as muscular as Tom Brady or whatever, it's no big deal. My guess is that most of you spend more time with Freshetta than on the ellipticals -- I know I do. Finally, if you're going to be the miserable dude or lady who disses Baby Dayliner on message boards, rips on Liz Phair fans for being in their 30s, at least have some STYLE to your posts. I'm not talking about spell check or nitpicking the usage of apostrophes. I am just talking something that has a little flow to it -- a turn of phrase, some swing to it. It does not have to be a masterpiece -- this post sure isn't -- but at least make it readable. At least try to live up to the standards of this site. Have some fun, right?

Baby Dayliner...can you divisive? Not for everybody but I can dig it. You Push I'll Go is a good song.

what do liz phair, mates of state, tom brady, baby dayliner and myself have in common?

all douchebags.

Have been following him for many years. His lyrics are literate and the real thing, not fake. You might think that I say this because I went to St. John's too but that is not so, I would think so anyway.

If you don't get it that is too bad but for you, not him.
