Beirut @ MHOW

It was almost two years ago that Beirut played in the venue that occupied the same space that they played last night (May 18, 2008). I don't know what my point is. Last night's last-minute Brooklyn show at MHOW was really great (2 encores, some covers, all the hits, and kick ass new songs). More pictures & comments, and the setlist, below....

what's up with the marla hansen tag? she wasn't there, was she?

Posted by kyle | May 19, 2008 3:06 AM

oh, and the last encore was siki siki baba, as per audience request.

Posted by kyle | May 19, 2008 3:13 AM

it was amazing. is he married now? doesn't matter, he has an amazing head of hair!

the new songs were all so good! i wasn't surprised exactly but it was really awesome, now i have something to look forward to from them/him.

Posted by Mandy | May 19, 2008 3:59 AM

He's married? But he has a profile on millionairedate.com!

Posted by Anonymous | May 19, 2008 4:52 AM

better than the masonic temple show last summer?

Posted by Anonymous | May 19, 2008 7:29 AM

Best show I've seen this year.....seriously

Posted by Tremagnum PI | May 19, 2008 7:48 AM

one of the best shows ever.

Posted by Anonymous | May 19, 2008 8:04 AM

way better than the masonic temple show - that wasn't even a good beirut show.

this was by far one of their best shows they've done - equal to the bowery run with owen pallett for sure.

Posted by Anonymous | May 19, 2008 8:13 AM

zach made mention of a show somewhere in the city tonight - anyone have details?

Posted by Anonymous | May 19, 2008 8:18 AM

what? a show somewhere in the city tonight?

go on...

Posted by Anonymous | May 19, 2008 8:33 AM

Good to know they redeemed themselves after the central park show! Which was pretty painful..

Posted by Erin | May 19, 2008 8:36 AM

Zach is getting fat.

And boy, these inflated praises given by over zealous concertgoers makes me think that this show gave last year's Daft Punk show a run for its money. I haven't heard this much use of silly hyperbole since last summer! I'm sorry I was out of town last night!

Posted by Anonymous | May 19, 2008 8:40 AM

so anyway, what about this show tonight?

Posted by Anonymous | May 19, 2008 8:47 AM

I love Cherbourg, and the curls!

Posted by Aaron-The City Veins | May 19, 2008 8:48 AM

He's my favorite fattie.

So disappointed that I couldn't go!

Posted by Anonymous | May 19, 2008 9:08 AM

really was such a fantastic, fantastic show.

Posted by sarah | May 19, 2008 9:28 AM

"zach made mention of a show somewhere in the city tonight - anyone have details?"

I don't remember that

Posted by Anonymous | May 19, 2008 9:28 AM

Zach said at one point in between songs, "I guess we'll see most of you tomorrow, eh?"

He never really clarified what he meant-- the commenters talking about a show tonight are making a guess, or know have some info that he didn't share with the audience yesterday.

Posted by Anonymous | May 19, 2008 9:34 AM

he was talking about seeing all his friends tomorrow, not a show. Since he lives in Brooklyn and the place was filled with their friends.

Posted by Anonymous | May 19, 2008 9:49 AM

I overheard someone at the show saying something along the lines of tonight being his birthday party. Not 100% sure I heard it correctly...

Posted by Anonymous | May 19, 2008 9:52 AM

Who CARES if he's getting chubby? He can get as fat as he wants, just keep the music coming! Anyway, it makes his already cherubic cheeks even cuter.

Although I do wanna know what that ring was all about...

Amazing show last night. That'll keep me happy until the next album, whenever that might be.

Posted by Sarah | May 19, 2008 10:10 AM

"Although I do wanna know what that ring was all about..."

Maybe he got it so girls/people would stop throwing themselves at him?

Posted by Anonymous | May 19, 2008 10:13 AM

a) he's not chubby
b) I heard he was married

Posted by Anonymous | May 19, 2008 10:17 AM

would love to get a recording of this show! can anyone help out?

Posted by Anonymous | May 19, 2008 10:29 AM

he is engaged, not married. there is no show tonight. and there nope, wasn't anyone's birthday.

Posted by fat head | May 19, 2008 10:33 AM

i second that - id love a recording of last night's performance...anyone? nyctaper? that'd be huge.

Posted by Anonymous | May 19, 2008 10:33 AM

he's getting fat? you're either blind or anorexic, and possibly both, anon 8:40.

Posted by Anonymous | May 19, 2008 10:40 AM

thirding a recording. The mix was fantastic on the floor. that show was fantastic!

Posted by Max | May 19, 2008 10:42 AM

Unless they were recording through the mixing board a live recording may not surface. Security was going through the crowd making sure people didn't capture audio or video. Lame in my opinion.

Posted by Anonymous | May 19, 2008 10:50 AM

1. applaud the sound man! (He has his own guy backstage on the left, I think.) It's incredible to keep that many non-electric instruments well-balanced. It was beautifully done.
2. show was phenomenal, simply stunning. Two years ago they were brilliant but shaky. Last night was a command performance.
3. i saw him wearing a ring

Posted by tom | May 19, 2008 11:13 AM

"i second that - id love a recording of last night's performance...anyone? nyctaper? that'd be huge."

Sorry. I didn't go last night. I'm going to have a very late night out in Jersey with British Sea Power tonight, so last night was a no go.

Posted by nyctaper | May 19, 2008 11:19 AM

is he married????

Posted by Anonymous | May 19, 2008 11:37 AM

That Caetano Veloso song is called "O Leaozinho".

THank You.

Posted by Anonymous | May 19, 2008 11:59 AM

"Those asking if he is married please visit perezhilton.com"

I don't think it's that weird to wonder if an artist you love is married.

right on, thanks max - would you be willing to fwd/post a link? thx!!!

"oh, and the last encore was siki siki baba, as per audience request."

actually, I think it was first Carousels and then Siki Siki.

Great show. Outstanding sound. First sold out show that I have been to @ Music Hall and I was happy to see that it was a comfortable sold out. As much as I miss Northsix, they really did do a good job with this venue.

Posted by Anonymous | May 19, 2008 12:32 PM

goddamit!

Posted by Anonymous | May 19, 2008 1:49 PM

yea i've gotta second tom, the sound guy did a phenomenal job. i've been to far too many shows that were fucked up by crap balancing.

it was so worth it for me to show up before doors like a nerd so i could be front row...

Posted by c | May 19, 2008 2:20 PM

in person he didn't look any chubbier than he did before. his face is a little fuller and it makes him look a little younger but that's all. but i can see why people would think he looks chubbier from just the photos. he's perfect either way. omg fangirling on bv, this hasn't happened since the daft punk concert last year.

Posted by Anonymous | May 19, 2008 2:32 PM

top 5 shows of my life!
stunning, beautiful, moving...i got misty during a few of the tracks.
so lucky to have been there.

applause to the sound guy as well!

Who's the chick playing the horn?

Posted by Anonymous | May 19, 2008 3:15 PM

idk but she was lots of fun

Posted by Mandy | May 19, 2008 3:18 PM

she was quite a firecracker

Posted by Anonymous | May 19, 2008 3:24 PM

John Norris was at the show. He touched me inappropriately.

If these two had a baby it would look like Zach Condon.

Posted by Anonymous | May 19, 2008 4:27 PM

a jason mraz/tom chaplin baby wouldn't be as talented...

Posted by Anonymous | May 19, 2008 4:43 PM

Yeah, John Norris stood right next to me. Singing along, dancing, and pumping his fist in the air the whole time. Thought he was there to be a journalist (does he still even do that anymore?), but clearly was a fan...

Amazing show. Couldn't have asked for more.

Holy crap what an amazing show!! I was right in front, center. Amazing!

The chic on the horn is Tracy Pratt, Kelly Pratt's wifey. She was a fire cracker, it was great!

Everyone who is listed on the Beirut's myspace page was on stage last night EXCEPT Heather Trost. There was an additional trumpet player named Eric, (If I remember correctly. I was pretty wasted~~~~) Met them all too, fucking chill people!

Their new songs were great and I can't wait for their new album. I hope they play shows in town while they prep for the recording....

Posted by yvonne | May 20, 2008 2:58 AM

would it have killed them to perform the songs the way they are on the album?? Scenic World or After the Curtain does not involve a violin in any way. Buy an synthesizer. Cut a verse out from Mt. Wrocai for a more instrumental interlude. He played all the songs in a much lower tempo than usual.

Posted by killjoy | May 20, 2008 3:44 AM

so what gives? i thought he was taking time out- does he jsut hate the UK or what?

Thanks for cancelling all your shows and then booking ones in america instead.

Posted by ro | May 20, 2008 8:08 AM

killjoy the only way you could have made your post more fratastic was by mentioning the overhyped-ness of daft punk.

Posted by Anonymous | May 20, 2008 9:39 AM

didn't go to the show, but the picture of the guy with the rock star guitar solo face on while playing ukulele is pretty funny

Posted by Anonymous | May 20, 2008 9:43 AM

i don't think i can be anymore jealous...damnit!

Posted by steph | May 20, 2008 10:12 AM

I put my camera on some weird setting I had never used and took some pics at the show.

Posted by Songs About Knives | May 20, 2008 10:18 AM

John Norris did an MTV special on Beirut a few years ago. It's on mtv.com, and it's pretty good.

Posted by pezbeth | May 20, 2008 2:49 PM

They apparently canceled those European dates so Zach could write material for their next album. I think it's understandable that doing a long tour on another continent could take away from your ability to write. One show in the place you live - not so much. Chill out. A new album means usually another tour.

Posted by Anonymous | May 20, 2008 3:01 PM

I also got to go and I was lucky. I was in town from Toronto for the weekend and relied on the goodness of some great guys to help me get tickets they had left over. thanks to all the cool people who sold their extra tickets for NOT a fortune!!

Posted by Rob MacInnis | May 20, 2008 7:07 PM

"Chill out, usually means another tour" Take it easy on the European fans guys. I can understand why they are frustrated overseas. This is the SECOND time they've canceled a bulk of their European tour. Actually they've done it a few times to certain countries.

If they play ONE show in all of say, Germany, die hard fans will go out of their way to travel to that one show. Book flights, hotels, cars, etc. So I understand where they are coming from, from a fans perspective....

I think next time they tour they could cut it into two parts. Have a nice break in between. And START overseas where they keep canceling. Make it up to the fans...

The last one is called "LEAOZINHO" (Little Lion), and it's a Brazilian song. Just for your information. :)

And congratulations for the great pics, they're simply amazing :)
