This is truly an A&R disaster...

Columbia is desperate for some young talent. those "Black Kids" seem to have high spirits but I never heard anything great beyond that one overly-hyped song from last summer.
Posted by JHendrix | May 1, 2008 11:21 AM
has their record even been recorded yet?
Posted by Anonymous | May 1, 2008 11:37 AM
probably the worst time ever to sign with a major
Posted by Anonymous | May 1, 2008 11:37 AM
they'll take the cash upfront and never work a day job again.
Posted by Anonymous | May 1, 2008 11:49 AM
That's not really how it works, 11:49...
Posted by Anonymous | May 1, 2008 11:54 AM
so this is what a demo tape gets you nowadays?
Posted by Anonymous | May 1, 2008 11:58 AM
the singer from black kids isn't really even a kid, he's 31. look it up.
Posted by Anonymous | May 1, 2008 12:13 PM
sucks for Black Kids...
probably signed a 360 deal.

Rick Rubin is an industry devil personified. why would anyone want to sign with him?
Posted by JHendrix | May 1, 2008 12:17 PM
kinda funny signing a 2nd rate version of arcade fire...who are pretty shitty themselves.
Posted by Anonymous | May 1, 2008 12:18 PM
More like - kinda funny all the jealous commenters! Go start your own band and see if you can do it, bitches.
Posted by Anonymous | May 1, 2008 12:25 PM
how are black kids anything like the arcade fire?
Posted by Anonymous | May 1, 2008 12:29 PM
"they'll take the cash upfront and never work a day job again."
Or be in debt for the next 7 years with immense pressure to record/sell albums while operating at a loss.
This is a complete airball for all parties involved, in my opinion.

arcade fire? Lots of informed people making comments today.

why does Pitchfork sweat this band so hard? seriously.

Reserve judgment until the album comes out.

They were so boring at Coachella. I mean, seriously boring.

The album has pretty much leaked months ago, I have 8 0f the ten tracks and I didn’t even put any effort into looking for them, I thought I was grabbing the ep at the time. Only Ones I'm missing are 05 and 10, I found the album to be really good actually, probably the best thing I have heard in quite some time and to put it into context I thought the single was ok, better songs on the lp then I'm not gonna teach my boyfriend in my opinion.
Partie Traumatic:
01 Hit the Heartbrakes
02 Partie Traumatic
03 Listen to Your Body Tonight
04 Hurricane Jane
05 I'm Making Eyes at You
06 I've Underestimated My Charm (Again)
07 I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance With You
08 Love Me Already
09 I Wanna Be Your Limousine
10 Look at Me (When I Rock Wichoo)

Their tour list is heavy! I hope they don't experience any burn out...but if you love what your doing, then it should be nothing to knock out all these dates. I'm just hearing about this act now and their not bad. The Twelves Remix of "I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance With You" is TOO GOOD!! hopefully is makes some special album cut...its only on the single for now.

Hey Alex, what you have are demos recorded over a year ago. The new album was produced by Bernard Butler and recorded in London. FYI.

Good looking out :)

I think it was more likely for a label to sign a band on a demo tape in the past than it is today actually. That's because if they were good, you were more likely to get any investment back because of a steel tight contract and a system that saw profits from physical releases.
Because of tigher climate labels are less likely to sign a band on a demo tape alone today. They have to have some major hype already building behind them and that demo tape a la Vampire Weekend, MGMT, and now Black Kids. And some regional love as well built up by tons of touring ahead of the deal.
Also, anybody speaking about how this was a bad decision for A&R or the band shouldn't say shit if they don't know the actual terms of the contract. Maybe labels are going to smarten up. Stop paying shit tons of money to get prime placement at Best Buy, just let the band buzz and collect on the syncs they get with TV and movies.
Well they're prob go bankrupt before that happens.
Anyway, there are lots of ways this could work out for both parties if their lawyers and managers, and A&R folks were/are smart about it.

i think people hated them before this happened
Posted by nick | May 1, 2008 3:13 PM
I still don't understand the cause of the hate. Is it simply a dislike of their music? If there's a band whose music I don't like, I don't waste energy hating them and making a big deal about it. I just ignore them.
Posted by Anonymous | May 1, 2008 3:38 PM
the (white) girl in the band said my best friend
reminded her of someone she hated in highschool-and that he didn't talk enough.
i hate them
Posted by Anonymous | May 1, 2008 3:39 PM
the reason why people hate, is because they are insecure about themselves. i just didn't think there were this many people severely insecure. stop watching the hills, and start reading national geographic or something.

11:49- all that cash they are given they have to make back. not easy to do at all with digital downloading.
Posted by Anonymous | May 1, 2008 4:31 PM
Calling this deal a bad idea does not necessarily mean people are just jealously hating on the band. Not knowing the details of the contract, it's hard to say whether or not it was a mistake, as 2:17 pointed out. Still, this looks like it has the potential to be a bad idea. Do they really have that much of a fanbase? If their debut full length turns out to be lackluster a la Tokyo Police Club, they're probably fucked. TPC at least had a couple of EPs and a fuckton of shows under their belt before Saddle Creek and the record. This is Black Kids'first sizable US tour, right?
