Why pay to see an anti-Semitic retard sing when there are MP3s, iPods and the Inter-web??

Posted by Anonymous | May 17, 2008 1:01 PM

I would not call him a retard. He does not read BV and leave moronic comments.

Posted by Anonymous | May 17, 2008 1:15 PM

oh come now, the man writes very infectious, simple songs, haunting that manage to invoke universal emotions.

listen to "My Yoke is Heavy" or "Surely You Don't Work All Night" or "the Story of an Artist" and tell me the guy doesn't have musical ability and something to say.

he is, though, a total drug-quelled psychotic who was raised by and is sheletered by very conservative christian family.

I don't think anyone is looking to Daniel Johnston for sensical socio-political insight, and whatever he says in that vein hardly has bearing on his music, the best of which was written and recorded over 25 years ago.

Posted by Anonymous | May 17, 2008 1:23 PM

Oh, what a scholar. "Sensical?" Sorry...

We all saw the documentary, wiseasses. Yes, the guy is looney tunes, and yes, he's a talented musician/artist.

Unless you can add anything that wasn't in the doc, I suggest you just keep ur trap shut.

Posted by Jesus H. Christ | May 17, 2008 1:39 PM

Well, Jesus H., failing to add anything that wasn't in the doc certainly didn't keep you from yap-yap-yapping.

In response to 1:23's much more, um, sensible comment: I think you're right on, with the exception that in my mind Daniel Johnston's best music was released less than 25 years ago (18, to be exact), on the album 1990. At the very least, it rivals any of the early home recordings.

Posted by Anonymous | May 17, 2008 1:58 PM

some of those songs weren't in the doc.

the doc covers pretty much everything. do I have to prove to you that I'm into this guy beyond having seen the movie? hows about you eat a dick. sorry, I don't have access to his diary or his baby pictures, but the points are the same.

I don't care if a lunatic is an anti-semite. The songs are where it's at.

sensible versus sensical.

can you please find something less relevant to pidgeonhole? cause this spelling grammar stuff is really IMPORTANT

Posted by Anonymous | May 17, 2008 2:13 PM

hey 1:39 - how's about you go back to sticking blunt things up your own asshole, it'll probably satisfy you more than being a blog comment disciplinarian

Posted by Anonymous | May 17, 2008 2:15 PM

Zinga!

This man might have a lot of problems- mental/biological- but he's a frickn' GENIUS! If you haven't seen the documentary about him, it's a MUST.

He's ANYTHING but retarded. This man is brilliant. He did things as a young kid without training that most people couldn't even think of or know how. He's intelligent, he just has some disabilities but this man is AMAZING.

It's sad to see posts making fun of people like him, who have SUCH ENORMOUS talent in so many different areas simply because of a problem that a LOT of people struggle with. Most of them aren't as prolific or talented as he is.

I know I'm taking this a bit seriously, but I ADORE Daniel Johnston and the movie was so compelling and heartbreaking. Plus, I have friends who are bi-polar and struggle with their creativity too. Some are prolific, some just don't manage.

I wish I had even a third of the artistic talent Daniel has.

Posted by Hi. How are you? | May 17, 2008 3:26 PM

It has been a while since I've seen an anti-Semitic retarded genius and I can't wait!

Posted by TWB | May 17, 2008 5:43 PM

He's anything but a genius.

Posted by Anonymous | May 17, 2008 7:50 PM

7:50 is right Daniel Johnston is stupid and dumb!

Posted by Anonymous | May 17, 2008 7:57 PM

Anyone saying Daniel Johnston is a genius must think the rest of the world is retarded. And when you look at hipsters wearing fruit-stripe gum colored clothing. Yeah, you're right.

Posted by Elwood D. Pennypacker | May 18, 2008 4:49 AM

A Brooklyn Vegan reader, debating about Daniel Johnston, bitching about hipsters?

Oxymoronic?

So is this gig with the "supergroup" of James McNew, Mark Linkous, Norman Blake, Jad Fair, etc?

Posted by Anonymous | May 18, 2008 8:40 PM

over zealous amateur photographers. people labeled her a bitch, when in fact it has got to be distracting for the performer. leave your flippin cell phones at home and burn the show into your memory.
