Giant

Giant has joined that exclusive club, the one with Dinosaur Jr., Matthew Dear, The Concretes, The Raveonettes, and many many others ..... bands that have been robbed in (or near) NYC.

From Lambgoat:

"During our set in Brooklyn tonight our van window was smashed in and our bags, laptops, MP3 players, headphones, and various personal items, not to mention our money box, with the majority of money we have as a band, was taken."
Giant was in town playing the mega-super-ridiculous show with Tombs, Engineer, and Rosetta. The boys ended with this hopeful nugget:
"I only say this to give an update as to our time on the road, and formally thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts for all of the help given to us. the people at the show in Brooklyn, Engineer, Tombs, Rosetta, words simply can not express how thankful we are. oddly enough, in the end, it may have been the most heartening experience any of this have had with this band. so, thank you Brooklyn."

"We will not be setting up a Paypal account or any of that mess. Just come to the shows and say 'hello!'"

Giant are at work on their new album Telomeres.

well Im glad they are not letting this affect them nagatively. If all my shit got stolen Id probably cry.

How many times is this going to happen until people realize that - no disrespect to the bands - YOU CAN'T BE STUPID IN THIS CITY!!!

To point; there is a racket of roving criminals, very professional I might add, that prey on bands in NYC. They are patient and always know when to strike. Maybe they are in collusion w/ some club emplyees who get a cut of what was stolen. Maybe they have "spotters" working with them in the audience who give a text signal that the time is right.
It happens often enough that it would seem true and only naivete could allow it happen again.

well, i doubt club employees would be in collusion, too much risk of getting caught? if they really wanted something, theres not much you can do, i mean people get even robbed at gunpoint.

this is the trouble with ebay now, people rob and put stuff up on ebay, its pretty terrible, online sales made fencing stolen goods so much easier to do.

This really sucks. But you know what? "our money box, with the majority of money we have as a band?" In NYC, you shouldn't carry more than a few $20s on your person if you can help it. Large sums of money belong in bank accounts. Let this be a lesson to bands to set up accounts for their collective earnings going to cover touring and equipment costs, instead of keeping it under a mattress or in a van.

keep the money in your shoe? just dont go crowd surfing...

Posted by Anonymous | May 28, 2008 12:29 PM

You fuckwads who come in here and lecture and blame the band really need to get over yourselves.

Posted by Anonymous | May 28, 2008 12:32 PM

ive seen these guys in a house in raleigh, NC.

nice guys.

also its interesting because these guys are from Greensboro, NC and I know a few NYC bands that were robbed in Greensboro. Randomness.

Posted by nick | May 28, 2008 12:35 PM

NYC is a much safer city then DC or LA in terms of crime, so let's get off the bullshit Law & Order "Crimewave" nonsense. That being said, having equipment stolen is no fun, but NYC isn't 'that much' different then anywhere else. Put your money in the bank or sleep with it on you. Nough' said.

Posted by Anonymous | May 28, 2008 12:36 PM

c'mon, it's not out of line to lecture these bands.

whether you're in a band or if you're a resident or if you're a tourist - you don't leave a bunch of expensive crap in a car. it's common sense.

if you were some random person that drove to NYC and parked your car on a street, would you leave a bunch of laptops, money, and mp3 players in your car? no way!

it sucks for the band, but hopefully they can at least walk away with the lesson that you don't leave shit unattended in a car in NYC - or any city for that matter. again, it's common sense.

"We will not be setting up a Paypal account or any of that mess."

Yeah! Fuck those lameass pussies who do that shit when they get robbed.

" if they really wanted something, theres not much you can do,"

How bout not leaving a money box in an unattended van?

why make it easy?

Don't venues pay by check? Do they always just give out cash that goes into a box? What is this the Little Rascals Bake Sale? If all the touring money is in a box in the van and all that is preventing someone from getting to it is the van window, then shouldn't the band have someone sitting in the van/watching the van while the rest of the group is inside doing the show?

I live in NYC and own a vehicle and don't so much as leave a piece of clothing in my back seat overnight, Why would people leave a van full of equipment and cash parked unattended?

My sympathies are with the group but I do wish people wouldn't make it so easy for criminals to hit their mark.

They stole my HEART!

this show was in Bushwick, right? I'd leave a laptop in a car in Greenpoint or Sunnyside, but I wouldn't even park a car in Bushwick. NYC's generally a lot safer place to leave stuff in a car than DC or SF or Philly . Cheers to Giant for showing some spunk and rocking in the face of adversity.

Posted by Anonymous | May 28, 2008 12:47 PM

you could leave a person inside and that person could be robbed. I mean come on people, you get car jackings, rapes, murders all over the place. are we now gonna blame every single victim out there? if some kid gets killed on a bike do you blame the parents for getting them one? or do you blame the rape victim for coming home at 5 am?

it just kind of sucks that over and over something happens and the first person who gets the blame here, and some other places (like prob at the police station?) is the victim.

not smart that they left their cash box (of all things) and mp3 players (you know, being so big these days that they can't fit in your pocket or anything) in there, but at least they're not whining about it and kinda realize that they messed up. lesson learned, and they're not going charity case about it.

Posted by Anonymous | May 28, 2008 1:19 PM

their fault. dont come back with your johnny come lately power doom-rock, please.

Posted by Anonymous | May 28, 2008 1:34 PM

It's not just Brooklyn...you can't leave anything important in your car or van anywhere. Things do actually get stolen outside of New York, believe it or not. This is called being street smart. It's not brain surgery. How can people not know these things? How hard is it to bring a few extra bags into the club with you when you play??

Posted by Anonymous | May 28, 2008 1:43 PM

ha, and like your bags cant get stolen from a club? i saw a guy get his pocket picked while playing guitar on the stage! crazy shit happens.

Posted by Anonymous | May 28, 2008 1:45 PM

Ah. Te lo meres eh?

Posted by Anonymous | May 28, 2008 2:08 PM

Apparantly you retards have never toured with a band. I guess you think they're supposed to not only bring all their music gear, but also their clothes, backpacks, sleeping bags, etc. from their van into the venue and put it somewhere while they play? And yes, bands usually get paid cash and a lot of the cash in the box is from merch. I do wonder why the money box wasn't in the club with the merch, though.

"if some kid gets killed on a bike do you blame the parents for getting them one?"

If the parents didn't buy a bike helmet for the kid along with the bike, or they didn't try to teach the kid anything about bike safety, then yeah, the parents may deserve some blame in such a case.

WHERE IS OBAMA AT? HURRY UP

Posted by B.N.E. | May 28, 2008 2:29 PM

you leave most anything visible from a window in a car (or van)... at night... you stand a good chance of a break in most any urban environment.

honestly, if i did that.. i'd be too embarrassed to tell anyone.

Posted by Anonymous | May 28, 2008 2:59 PM

re: 2:20's comment

I've toured with bands. You don't leave your laptop or your ipod in the van. Bring 'em in the club. Leave 'em with the merch guy. Keep 'em by your amp. If your duffel bag full of clothing gets stolen, oh well. If your stash of Juxtapoz mags get stolen, your Dave Eggers books, whatever...you replace those easily. But you keep the expensive shit with you, whether you're going to a restaurant or bar or whatever. Last I checked, you can still fit a laptop and Ipod into a backpack; I took mine with me in almost every city, just in case.

Not smart to risk it, but I still feel bad for 'em...sucks losing shit, and sucks losing it away from home even more.

"NYC is a much safer city then DC or LA in terms of crime, so let's get off the bullshit Law & Order "Crimewave" nonsense. "

Crime in *NYC* might be low, but we are talking about Bushwick here. Bushwick is a major ghetto. I wouldn't even park my car there let alone one full of gear.

Posted by Anonymous | May 28, 2008 9:47 PM

"I guess you think they're supposed to not only bring all their music gear, but also their clothes, backpacks, sleeping bags, etc. from their van into the venue and put it somewhere while they play? "

um, clothing and sleeping bags are not the same thing as a box of money and computer equipment.

Most criminals aren't going to break into a van and risk getting caught over some sleeping bags and a bunch of smelly clothes from some touring band.

Posted by Anonymous | May 30, 2008 2:09 PM

Bushwick for sure, but most everywhere you don't leave shit in a van. If you do you have someone stay with it...
