'Hidden gay life of macho hip hop stars' (new book)

DOWNLOAD: Estelle & Kanye West - American Boy (LAZRtag remix) (MP3)

Hiding in Hip Hop

Terrance Dean, a former executive at music channel MTV, has penned a memoir of his life and times in the hip hop industry as a gay man. It is an explosive exposé of a thriving gay subculture in an aggressively male business, where anti-gay lyrics and public homophobia are common.

Perhaps not surprisingly, many in the industry are nervous about the book's publication this week, fearing that it will expose some of the top black names in music and Hollywood as secretly gay.

I may be blind as a bat for not knowing this sooner, but apparently Missy Elliott is gay. I can easily see it, but she does kinda come off as hetero, at least in her lyrical content and persona.

I think it's sad...

Hip Hop is gay

Posted by COSMO KRAMER | May 12, 2008 2:08 PM

this is an important issue; the fact that the 'hip hop' world has, for the most part, internalized the mainstream white world's violent macho bullshit and homophobia.

it's sad really, for this segment of the black community to reflect the bullshit of much of white america. ironic too, that hip hop would be hostile to a minority group in america (gays and lesbians) when they themselves know all to well what it's like to be treated like second class citizens.

another hugely important documentary along these lines is: HIP HOP: Beyond Beats and Rhymes, which shows the filmmaker, a straight, black man and hip hop fan, interviewing hip hop artists about their hostility toward women and homosexuals. you'll see some supposedly tough guys really squirm.

Blacks hate gays?!?!?

no way! I wouldn't have guessed that in million years!

Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2008 2:31 PM

no, some blacks hate gays. and some whites hate blacks, and some gays hate elton john, etc. i mean, the world is more complicated than you think. don't make broad generalizations. that's what (some) republicans do.

"this is an important issue; the fact that the 'hip hop' world has, for the most part, internalized the mainstream white world's violent macho bullshit and homophobia."

Heavy metal did the same thing, it's not about blacks and whites.

"the 'hip hop' world has, for the most part, internalized the mainstream white world's violent macho bullshit and homophobia."

Lol! I love it! Could you please write a whole paper with that premise for your media studies 101 class and post it in the BrooklyVegan comments? Funniest shit ever!

Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2008 3:54 PM

Yeah, I second 3:54 : that's a load of shit. You're almost blaming "mainstream white" people (whoever the fuck that is) for what comes out of black rappers' mouths.

Can't black rappers take responsibility for themselves? Assuming that they can't would be a rather bigoted opinion.

"the 'hip hop' world has, for the most part, internalized the mainstream white world's violent macho bullshit and homophobia."

right, because violent macho bullshit and homophobia are exclusively white traits...

also: he's not really hip hop, but i think Usher is all up in that shit.

The gov't and white people created gangster rap so future black leaders would kill each other.

Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2008 5:33 PM

Louis Farrakhan created gangsta rap so Jews could make off of it so the rappers could get angry over not getting said money so they could write rap lyrics about it and get middle class white guys and fans of hip hop to take up arms and kill Jews for Louis Farrakhan.

"no, some blacks hate gays. and some whites hate blacks, and some gays hate elton john, etc. i mean, the world is more complicated than you think. don't make broad generalizations. that's what (some) republicans do. "

WTF? And I guess no democrats do. Idiot.

Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2008 8:10 PM

people seem serious but "The gov't and white people created gangster rap so future black leaders would kill each other." was funny

Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2008 8:42 PM

No, mainstream white world didn't "create" it...that wasn't the poster's point. The point was twofold: one, much of hip hop sadly imitates the values of hollywood and wall st.--violence, misogyny and homophobia. And two, the homophobia is ironic, since the black community should know better than to do to another group what mainstream white america has been doing to them for centuries--discriminating against a minority group.

Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2008 10:56 PM

I have heard that the KKK uses rap videos as recruitment tools, to show their followers how "degenerate" the rap world is. Of course, Hollywood and Madison Ave. is just as twisted in its values, but it's easy to use rap as a scapegoat for societal ills.

Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2008 10:58 PM

The mainstream in any Muslim society is homophobic, too, and some Muslim societies are so insular that you know they weren't influenced by anything from the West. Why do you automatically blame "The Man" for homophobia in the black community when it's not hard to believe that the black community is just like every other post-ancient society in its attitude towards homosexuality?

Posted by Anonymous | May 14, 2008 5:04 AM
