Islands @ Webster Hall, NYC - pics
photos by Bao Nguyen

Taking the stage, front man Nick Thornburn (Diamonds) had his face painted like a mime. The band quickly began with "Arm's Way," the opening track of their new album. The mood of the night seemed much different than past Islands shows, with the band focusing primarily on their darker sophomore release. The songs are far less immediate than those on "Return to the Sea." "It's a grower" stated the somber Thornburn, who seems to be going through a rough time in his life. His songs were always about death, but this time their not always as light. The show was Saturday night at Webster Hall. More pictures below....Though they played some of the earlier favorites, Thornburn seemed like he was being forced, even at one point introducing "Swans" by saying "this song sucks." And by the tone of his voice, he really seemed to mean it. And he really didn't seem interested at all in playing them, which took a lot away from the performance. [Jonny-Leather]

in dc for "don't call me whitney, bobby" nick prefaced the song by saying he hated it.

I've heard that he's kinda a dick on stage.

Rather unmemorable show. I don't even recall him saying any songs sucked.

He seemed to be enjoying himself at the BrooklynVegan party at R Bar during CMJ. He did not seem to be enjoying himself in the least during Saturday's set.

Jesus even the crowd looks bored. Next...

"Jesus even the crowd looks bored. Next..."
Ha to be fair to the band, that was the crowd after the opener waiting for Islands to go on.

he said "rough gem" sucked, not swans.
the new album is what sucks, for reals.

i love them but he does seem like a bit of a douche. when they played the outdoor show in williamsburg, his bandmate plugged his side project's show between songs and nick chastised him, then questioned his commitment to islands in a half-kidding, cringe-inducing way for about 5 minutes. he's a hell of a songwriter, what's all the insecurity about?

Huh, I feel bad for him in a way. He didn't seem like he wanted to be at Coachella when they played. He didn't say anything until the very last song, where he plugged which day the new album would come out. I like the new album a lot, though. "Return to the Sea" sounds kind of dated nowadays.

Wow, I forgot all about this. That really was awkward, but it seemed like Nick kind of realized he was coming across as a dick. If I remember correctly, he sort of backed off after a bit and made it clear he was kidding. Overall, he looked like he was having a pretty great time that day.
Maybe the criticism of the new album has gotten to him (personally, I think it's pretty fucking great). Also, I thought they didn't play Rough Gem anymore...?

wow. this band is fading fast. what a shame.

I thought it was a lot of fun.

Did I miss something here? Their new album is great.

You guys are WEIRD. Both the album and Saturday's show are/were amazing.

He probably hates it now ever since he lost his cool when the stage got run over by the crowd at SUNY Purchase
Playing in White Face though, that's pretty funny

I'm kinda disappointed these guys aren't getting a ton of press and praise right now for the new album. It's one of the year's best, but sadly I'm sure all the bandwagoners got scared away when Pitchfork handed it a 6 or something and hung it out to dry. They're also one of the better live bands out there, whether Thornburn wants to talk or not during the set.

rolling thunder revue

incredible show and album. And the opening track of their new album is "The Arm", not Arm's Way.

Time for these cock gobblers to get back to gobbling cock.

this show and the album were great, they were more on that night then they have been in a long long time.
if you can't deal with nick's cynicism, on stage jokes and honesty and dark vibes, you should grow up and only listen to matt&kim and dan deacon (who are both great, but quite posi.)
isn't it nice for people to be doing something different?

also, this review is coming from the same (racist) dude who flat-out made up parts of the story about his girlfriend getting robbed at a toddp show, so, that's that..

i really like their new album. it's not return to sea but a totally different vibe. i don't get why all these indie rock fans always want bands to just repeat themselves. vertigo is a great closer to the album. it shows like no one has the balls to support an album that pitchfork dissed.
Posted by Anonymous | May 27, 2008 5:30 PM
whatever, who actually reads pitchfork amymore? it's so passe, plus, downloading leaks is a way better way to form opinions. everyone i know who has listened to arm's way on their own has been disappointed, and rightly so. return to the sea was playful and had guest verses from subtitle and busdriver (who has the best rap name period). arm's way has some solid songs ("the arm," "abominable snow," etc.), but not the same staying power. it's forgettable.
yeah, saturday's show was kinda a non-entity. i was pleased they played "rough gem," since they didn't play it all during cmj, but otherwise, so-so. anon@10:36, good point about the outdoor show. that was a weird moment, but a good show. webster hall, on the other hand, had no pop.

I think the new album is great, and far superior to most of what else is out there. it's certainly takes more listens than Return to really get into it, but i think it actually may be the better album.
as far as the show goes, it just wasn't as great as the other times i've seen them. The fans definitely weren't as into as past shows, and the band (mainly just Thornburn) didn't seem as into it either.

how come we all the haters aren't blaming webster hall on this one? pitchfork writers are irrelevant, but pitchfork tv is nice.
