James Murphy, you didn't say it was a "private party"

If there was any indication in James Murphy's posting that the first "Special Disco Version" party at Santos' Playhouse last night was going to be a private party, I wouldn't have posted it the way I did. According to one anonymous commenter,
this was clearly false advertising, since when does "5 dollar drinks and music" mean a few 500 pound bouncers and a coked up studio 54 wannabe with a 20 pg guest list on a wednesday night? i guess this just proves once again that we should all party in brooklynUPDATE: I should also mention that the night I went it wasn't like that. You were either on list or paid $5.00. It also wasn't packed at the time.

the idea of "exclusive" indie parties is total bullshit. when the fuck were indie parties exclusive? wasn't it always a bunch of black hoodie/cardigan wearers in a basement somewhere, dancing to new order? this whole indie-goes-mainstream thing, it's not gonna go away and there's nothing i can do about it, but i can fucking COMPLAIN and i will.

Just because indie rockers like LCD Soundsystem doesn't mean that DFA is throwing an "indie party"
Posted by Anonymous | May 22, 2008 12:50 PM
are you guys sure it was an actual list, cause most nyc clubs pretend to have guestlists, though in reality they're just an excuse to make sure that only the pretty people get in.
i just cant imagine that they would go through the effort to having such a big guestlist for what is essentialy yet another dfa party.
Posted by Anonymous | May 22, 2008 12:50 PM
exclusive indie parties?
what's so INDEPENDENT about that?
YEAH!
but SRSLY
AWK can go hug cokeheads all he wants
i'd rather his band stay broken up so that Obituary can tour properly.

Wow, I'm sick of this place already.
Posted by chris | May 22, 2008 12:51 PM
Actually i am sort of glad they did this. It is a good idea to start trying to keep a lot of you losers out of these parties. You should not be there in the first place. You bring them down and reduce the cool factor. The crowds at Studio B parties are lame as hell when they let in just any of you. Yes, please go back to Brooklyn and keep trying to think you are what NYC nightlife is all about.
Posted by nyctapers evil twin | May 22, 2008 12:52 PM
indie is a bullshit phrase we all know it - it's cool to be on interscope and dfa - how in the world are these independent? they are conglomerates. you pay taxes the state has funds they are invested in things you don't necessarily care about. you bought a sandwich out of convenience. you made a sandwich how indie!
where is the true DIY shit happening?

wow. you guys are all crazy. the club is not even officially open yet. this was a night for the dudes to test out the soundsystem, etc and brooklyn vegan posted it when he shouldn't have. shit happens. there will be lots of parties in your life you are not invited to. chill out.
i thought the room was great. got a peek at the upstairs too and it's going to be an amazing live venue. high stage. good sight lines.
the best was standing outside smoking a cigarette when these three dudes got turned away at the door, and one of them says to the others 'bv is gonna hear about this.' dork.

It was not private. There was a guest list (I don't know - maybe James Murphy's friends?!) or you could pay $5 to get in as mentioned.
Posted by Anonymous | May 22, 2008 1:02 PM

I'm calling you out. Me and six friends got fucked out of dancing at your Special Disco Version party last night. Private party, you've heard the whole thing by now. Come back and give us another party there, $5, just like it was supposed to be, and we'll forgive you. We really like you, but that brought us down.

contrary to popular belief, john norris died 12 years ago. since then, a team of NASA scientists has been keeping him animate with a serious of pulleys and electric shocks. norris isn't, and never was, an indie music fan, preferring to keep company with rock heavyweights such as limp bizkit and the guys who play with socks on their privates. in 1995, prophetically, he even went so far as to criticize the future founder of dfa records, james murphy, for being a "poor indie party host" and a "average-at-best frontman." we continue to see mr. norris at indie events, be it a hipster show in williamsburg or an mtv handjob fest with andrew w.k., because fred durst finally wised up to the hood-winking that had been taking place for so long.
r.i.p. john norris and good choice of venues on the part of the team of NASA scientists.

This just got posted on the DFA forum. I think that's fair enough, but when I showed up last night, the bouncer asked if I was on the list, I said no, he asked me how I heard about it, I said brooklyn vegan, and he said sorry, I can't let you in. Let's get this right shall we? If you guys want to have a password let us know that we have to say it. DFA party, James Murphy, Special Disco Version, I don't care, but don't awkwardly blame us because we arrived ready to dance, buy booze, and throw some money Santo's way and help a new club get on their feet.

"the best fun is when someone really really wants in but can't get in - you're a sad fuck on both levels, for wanting into the silly exclusive treehouse in the first place, and for not getting let in."
Agreed, but that doesn't seem to be the case here. People made plans and took time out of their lives to go listen to and dance to the music that DFA is associated with at a new club they advertised they be playing it at. Then they weren't let in even though they wanted to pay $5.00.
Based on your logic, if the grocery store stopped letting people in based on what they looked like, you would call the ones who didn't hear about that rule in advance, losers.

This is just 77 Drum bullshit all over again....
We're ramping up for a busy summer, and when stuff gets posted on a website like this one and it's inaccurate... CORRECT IT. You act professional, you address the issue, or hell, you don't promote the event. If BV wasn't supposed to post it, then again, issue a correction.
A lot of private parties go down that are never posted on BV. Some, like the Kanye show, are get posts, but they're clearly noted as private events. People don't line up, they don't bitch after, and they don't feel fucked over by some social clique snobbery shit because they were never mislead. People planned their nights, spent money for cabs, and subways, and wanted to give Santo's whatever the hell it's called some business. Is the point to revitalize nightlifes creative juices, or just replicate Disco2000 if it had been taken over by the Jersey guys in high tops sneakers.
Posted by Anonymous | May 22, 2008 5:37 PM
James Murphy is a thick necked frat boy in disco clothing. Don't believe his "dance party" vibe. The dude is first and foremost a drummer and you can't take the bam bam out of him. Drummers have complexes. You know all those jokes about inferiority complexes.

Bao and I went to this place with like five dudes last week and it was apparently a private party. After three of us couldn't tell the bouncer what we were there for (we didn't even know where we were or what was happening), Bao shouted "Andrew!" and they let us in.
Rule of thumb for this sort of thing, just act like you know exactly what's going on and refer to whoever is throwing the party by their first name.

Manifest Destiny has always been my philosophy in situations where i want in and there appears to be (in everyone else's eyes) some kind of opposition to that desire. it has been effective 99 - maybe 100% of the time - i'd just let it slide if it didn't. I have been seriously disappointed with NYC "nights" though since moving back from a couple years in LA last May. most of what goes on with regularity (on a weekly basis) is soooo generic and/or pretentious and overpriced. Another rule of thumb is that the BEST shows are usually 5 bucks. See the Cakeshop anniversary (cause co-motion, new bloods, vivian girls)! that was an exceptional night (from what i could tell)! even though i got there too late (the end of cause co) i could tell that i had missed a great night. I almost went last night just because i've been so starved to find a weekly place (like Part Time Punks in LA) to hang and dance (to non-generic music. generic = new order, dfa, etc of course) and see cool new bands. also the place has to be an ok size i guess. glasslands is ok and i'm really looking forward to this summer to change all this. starting with the Popfest (cats on fire, love is all) and some todd p shows coming up - but still where do you go where you know you can count on having an exceptionally good time every week - seeing new bands for 5 bucks or free (like part time punks, punky reggae, the smell) and hearing dj's play stuff like Orange Juice, Gina X Performance, Swell Maps, Love Is All, Drinking Electricity, Pink Military, Savage Progress etc. ? correction, where can you go to hear bands like that that isn't like forever away in Manhattan? i've heard beauty bar has a good post punk night but i dunno about that place - plus there's no bands that i know of that perform there and it's kinda overblown. i swear everywhere that i've been is farther away than anywhere i'd have to go from Silverlake in LA. NY is supposed to be easy to get around. ok i'm whining i should just go back to LA right? fair enough. it is partially my fault for living in park slope provincial (really gowannus). stillllll there's gotta be more!!!!!!!!!!!! goddamn NY! the moral of the story is i almost went to this last night and ammm sooooo glad i didn't because i've been fooled twice before in the dead of winter by false advertising fliers of parties names i won't mention for political reason i won't divulge. twice before i've made the trek out and the night was just garbage. so i'm so glad i didn't go out last night (mainly cause i'm like eh about DFA). seriously though i am starved for something i can aesthetically sink my teeth into that i don't have to spend 20 bucks on a cab to get back from after. this is more specifically applicable during the winter. it seems like i'm gonna either have to try and start something up myself or move back to LA
if i want something more than the generic dfa, new order listening crowds agenda appeals to. or perhaps i'm missing something in Bushwick? only if it wasn't once again forever and a day away - i have to move there? blah...
Posted by Anonymous | May 23, 2008 12:25 AM
Wow, have any of you actually HEARD James and Pat DJ? They don't exactly drop 'generic records'—they mostly play obscure disco singles ... on actual vinyl—and neither does the label. Clearly those of you hating on DFA haven't heard the string of bizarre and ballsy singles they've put out over the past year or so, from Prinzhorn Dance School to the Death From Aboard imprint.
It's as if you're all equating DFA with "dance punk" itself, which is unfair considering the Rapture (long off the label) was one of their only acts in that vein. Seriously: Black Dice, Delia Gonzalez and Gavin Russom, Hot Chip, Syclops, Prinzhorn Dance School, Shocking Pinks ... none of this stuff is generic. I bet of the preceding bands, most of you have only heard Hot Chip (one of the ONLY inventive live dance bands out there) and (maybe) Black Dice because you were told to like them in 2002.
Yes, DFA and James Murphy are figureheads of the "scene" you've grown to hate, but it's ridiculous to fault them for it when LCD Soundsystem had one of the best albums of 2007 (hardly a simple "dance punk" record, especially the singles "Someone Great" and "All My Friends") and the label stopped releasing new-wave/disco-punk/etc. a long time ago. Hell, Hercules and Love Affair is basically gay house—not exactly the hottest trend out there in hipster land.

What does Brooklyn have to do with anything, James?
These kind of promotion mixups are equally as annoying for those of us who have always lived in Manhattan.
It's really simple. You can promote events on the internet, or you can have a discriminating door policy. Make a choice though, because it's not cool to do both.
Posted by Anonymous | May 23, 2008 9:39 PM
actually, and not to be a dick, i am 38 years old and last i checked i can do whatever the fuck i want, "anonymous".
i said i felt badly and would make an effort to not let it happen again.
also, my "internet promotion" was a post to the dfa forum the night before the party, which gets, max, a few hundred hits a day. maybe 20 of those people live in the new york area (and no complaints from anyone there).
i didn't post anything to this forum--someone from bv did it themselves.
"what does brooklyn have to do with it?" read the previous comments. (and, seriously, figure out how to get into a club. i've been doing it since the 80s. it's not rocket science)
"these kind of promotion mixups"????
ok-- maybe people need to start mugging fools in this city again. . . are we a hardcore band from north jersey?
to the poster who said i don't have to answer to this crap, i get it. i know. but i DO want to apologize for people not getting in. we try to be pretty thoughtful, and that's always been a pretty central thing at dfa since the beginning. of course the flipside of trying to be thoughtful is that you want to strangle tiny little anonymous internet babies. it won't stop the actually hilarious complaints--which i like--but maybe some loser with an advanced degree, a sense of entitlement and no work ethic will think for a second--just long enough to get them to shut the fuck up.
done.. aaaaaand...... done.
Posted by james murphy | May 23, 2008 10:01 PM
It's one thing to be sorry, it's another thing to get into a petty flame war, and in turn insult the people you're supposed to feel badly for.
Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2008 4:22 AM
I really resent when people use their age and years in the scene to explain and/or garner some sense of authority in terms of their dealings. I think James is only opening himself to more criticism the more he tries to justify something he never intended to do in the first place. I feel symathy for the guy.
The real problem is blog culture and the fact that a short posting on the DFA forum got picked up and taken out of context by various sites. If anything positive can be taken from this minor flare, maybe folks should rethink the authority they give to blogs in the first place. I don't even want to get into how blogs can make or break a band that has only been together three weeks . . . but the principle is the same.
Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2008 11:40 AM
Plus, his protestant work ethic and anti-education posturing is completely misguided. "Shut the fuck up"?
We all need to retain some sense of decency here. Entitlement? Come on, this is America and, more specifically, a readership (sorry BV) that, by its very definition, is entitled enough to have time to read and attend these kinds of events. This includes those musicians who make the music too. I'd be surprised to find anyone in this culture who does not feel a certain sense of entitlement.

I love the part where he says he's a grown adult and can do what he wants. Well that's a mature response. So yes, he's a grown adult and he can be as snobby as he wants, and treat people as poorly as he wants. Score one for the Murph.

There are about 90 posts above from people who'd kill to be James Murphy for a day. Haters suck.

i bet most people posting negative shit here are failed musicians. It's always that way. They KNOW they could do better than anyone on dfa, if only the world would have LISTENED to them and understood their genius.
You are all faggots.

Faggots?
Man, this blog culture has ebbed at an all time low. Bunch of cro mags who take their politics from the GOP!!!

If you immediately associate an anti-gay slur with people who don't share your political views as a whole, you are really not that different from the asshole who used the slur.
Posted by Anonymous | May 26, 2008 12:39 AM
With whom do you associate anti-gay slurs? It's been a while since I've seen the left scrambling to promote an "anti-queer" agenda.
Asshole? Just trying to curb the lazy tendency among folks on this thread to use the kind of trash talk that, hopefully, those interested in this kind of music would prefer be left in the high school locker room.
Trust me, I am "that different" from someone who would needlessly elevate "musicians" and deplore everyone else as "faggots."

Lazy = automatically associating an anti-gay slur with Republicans in general. Anon 12:39 is dead on.

I can't believe any self-respecting person interested in exp music is even wasting their time defending the GOP. I don't consider calling into question a stupid homophobic throwaway line a "political view"; it's common sense.
Last time I checked, Republicans are the sole party in the U.S, that tries to block gay marriage.
Posted by Anonymous | May 26, 2008 12:03 PM
Plus, the last time I checked, the "disco" to which James Murphy's music points was a gay bastion long before the rise of the religious right.

I walked in support of gay marriage and will be voting for Obama this year. There are still some issues on which I lean to the right. A homophobe sees all gay people as evil. You see all Republicans as evil. In that sense you are not that different from the first guy. This whole black and white outlook in politics, tolerance and a lot of other topics is one of the biggest problems in this country. If you expect tolerance from others, you need to show tolerance to people who don't share all your political views rather than stamping people's foreheads with a blue or red label.

Hey man, I am tolerant of difference of all sorts. I am less tolerant of hate speech and feel like we've been distracted by my, perhaps over simplified, association of that kind rhetoric w/ the right. I could point to countless examples of where the right continues to hold sway on issues having to do w/ race or sexual identity (see the West VA primary as just one example), but the real issue is whether we want the thread to degrade into this kind of stupid (and that's what it really is) and empty name calling.
But I do think that the slur is totally out of place on a thread dealing w/ James Murphy's disco-inspired music (a genre that owes more to gay culture, than straight). How this somehow reflects upon my tolerance of others/political differences is looking at the problem from the wrong end of the telescope. If the slur was racial or ethnic and I were to say, "this isn't the Jim Crow south, that language is inappropriate for this forum," would you call me biased against the south or against history? This whole "show tolerance to get tolerance" sounds like the kind of libertarian (oops, there I go again) smoke screen often used by those who want to allow comments that, in other contexts, would be seen as inflammatory hate-speech.
I could say "it's all good," but that kind of empty dismissal shows a real cowardice in the face of a lot of empty posturing that characterized this thread. I don't want people to give me back a cookie cutter image of my politics, but I also don't want to be forced to read this kind of hostility on a blog that is supposed to support a scene and music (in this case, James Murphy and LCD Soundsystem). . . which, generally speaking again, is pretty progressive.
