LA venues: Conga Room & Largo are moving to new spaces

Largo

Largo, which will shutter its 120-seat Fairfax Avenue location after a final comedy show Monday (May 5th), will open June 2 at the Coronet Theater space on La Cienega. Aimee Mann, who will release an album June 3, will be the first performer.

The Conga Room, which presented Latin artists for 8½ years in a mid-Wilshire location before closing in May 2006, has Nov. 14 circled for its opening in the L.A. Live complex across the courtyard from the Nokia Theater. Jimmy Smits, Jennifer Lopez, Paul Rodriguez and Sheila E. are still among the co-owners of the venue, which will boast a 1,000-capacity club and a 100-seat restaurant in addition to a VIP lounge. ALSO: "A movie about Largo is scheduled to come out in 2008, directed by Flanagan and Andrew van Baal. It features the musicians Colin Hay, Grant Lee Phillips, David Garza, and Aimee Mann, and the stand-up comedians Paul F. Tompkins, Patton Oswalt, Zach Galifianakis, Louis C.K., Greg Proops, and Sarah Silverman.", says Wikipedia.

why are we reporting on California venues now BROOKLYN Vegan?

The Largo is/was a very important venue to the music and comedy community, not just in LA. Many musicians from NYC played there and many New Yorkers visiting LA patronized the place.

Jon Brion's Friday night residency is world famous and everyone from Fiona Apple to Elliott Smith has played there.

Some of you should step outside a little more.

I for one appreciate this news. Thank you.

Nowhere in the name "Brooklyn Vegan" is there a contractual obligation to fetishize venues based in Brooklyn. I assume there are musicians based in L.A. who travel to NY often who would appreciate this post.

"why are we reporting on California venues now BROOKLYN Vegan?"

A vegan living in LA with a blog could not be found to report such news.

If it was a famous venue, then I would like to read about it, but I read BROOKLYNvegan for local news. Sites like Pitchfork are better suited for [inter]national news.

BV can post what BV likes -- bitch about SXSW, bitch about Coachella all you want. Feel free to read some other blog. Fuck you haters.

maybe you guys can write up a list of artists and topics that you would like to see covered here. that way you'll never have to scroll past an article again!

retarded conversation going on above aside, this makes me sad beacuse I always hoped to make it to the original Largo to see one of those Jon Brion shows one day.

Largo was as good as a room gets.

the largo is like 2 minutes from my house! *snif*
oh wait i never went there though.

I'd like to know if BV himself ever attended a show at Largo.

"Some of you should step outside a little more."

Because we'd be more likely to learn about venues in faraway cities out in real-world NYC rather than from the Web? O.K.

"I assume there are musicians based in L.A. who travel to NY often who would appreciate this post."

Why? Because when they're in NY, they can't access the Web sites that they frequent when they're at home?

agreed, thank you. i loved Largo when i lived in LA and also when i visited from NYC. i saw some incredible shows there.
plus, Flanagan's just a good guy.
the rest of you 'haters' are just provincial losers.

I mean, Largo's really cool but it's kind of hard to get to where i live when i'm in LA. the shitty part about LA is it isn't all nice and compact like the city so you need a car or your fucked basically. none of that sustainable bike riding, San Francisco hippie shit.
