(Le) Poisson Rouge - new venue's floor plan, initial schedule

Le Poisson Rouge

* full catering kitchen, concert bar menu, and daytime lounge menu
* restrooms in 2 areas at opposite ends of the venue
* furnished green room with en suite bathroom, shower & tour office
(LE) POISSON ROUGE, the awkwardly named new 800-capacity music venue ("multimedia art cabaret") opening where The Village Gate used to be in the West Village has revealed their floor plan. Click HERE for a larger version.

They've also revealed their initial schedule. Damon & Naomi, Baby Dee, Bill Frisell, Doveman, Nico Muhly, Samamidon, and Matmos all have shows coming up there. Tickets are on sale.

"The adjoining lounge will be open during the day as a café, and at night as a secondary bar and event space." The full June schedule is also pasted below....

The place is being booked by the guy who has done the amazing Wordless series of concerts. And by the looks of the schedule, he's keeping up the eclectic but somehow totally appropriate mix of talent -- Frisell, Rickie Lee, Havens, Soulive, Jonathan Kane, Matmos, Marco Benevento.

An unusually high percentage of the door goes directly to the musicians performing, so I guess if you have a problem supporting artists, then you might be opposed to paying for shows.

Looks like JVC is dictating the shows and pricing for most of the shows listed. Lets see what happens after JVC.

I walked into the room today to check it out. Too many columns. Reminds me of the old village gate....

I live upstairs and I'm not really looking forward to another club at this location.

What is wrong with you people? I went to see Rickie Lee Jones last night and she was amazing! The space is beautiful, the drinks were reasonable, and you could hear a pin drop during her performance. If you consider paying $20 for a student ticket to see Rickie Lee Jones too pricey and thus left to the alleged "wealthy dumbfucks" then I would say your problem is deeper rooted than the price of a ticket. Perhaps you should channel all the negativity into something productive, like, let's say, finding a job.

Bought reasonably priced tix to see SEBASTIEN TELLIER there, the site said doors open at 10:30PM. Got there at 10:30 only to wait outside on line in the cold rain for over an hour!!! The line was not even moving, the bouncers were just letting all the VIP trust fund babies in first! By 11:45 I was soaked and had frostbite and could not take it and went home.
NEVER AGAIN - DONT WASTE YOUR TIME!

This club is awful - I bought tickets 2 weeks in advance for the recent Dec 11. sold-out Sebastien Tellier show. The doors were listed to open at 10:30 pm, headlining artist to perform at 12:00 a.m. I stood in an unmoving line outside in pouring rain for 3 hours, and when I realized I was missing the artists I intended to see, I left without even getting in. Mind you, I was still waiting in line after 3 hours and hadn't moved forward at all. The organization the venue has in place to let in people with advance tickets was terrible and I will never buy advance tickets to this venue again. Places such as Webster Hall holds triple the volume of this club and it takes 30 minutes for the will call to get in if even that.

They also did not refund my admission. This club and its promoters are a bunch of frauds.

I agree with you that there are trends in the world making it increasingly hard for some kinds of artists to make a living, but I don't think the CC licenses have much if anything to do with it. My hunch is you’re bitter about the trends in general and their impact on you or your friends, and CC is something for you to lash out at. You're obviously free to do that.

I tried to get tickets today to see Rebirth Brass Band on December 29th. I was planning on buying three, and these were to be Christmas presents. What I encountered is both a poor reflection of how the venue is managed and a fair warning to artists planning to book their shows here.

According to the venue website, "The (Le) Poisson Rouge box office is open daily from 5PM until close." This is flat out false.

After getting there promptly at 5pm, I found the doors locked, with no signs posted anywhere indicating anything out of the ordinary. Even though I was in a bit of rush, I understand not every human interaction takes places with swiss timing, so I waited. 5:30 came and went. 5:45. Eventually we were let inside out of the freezing cold by a contractor. Someone who works for the venue, I think his name was Ruben -- was on his way. Finally, an hour after the box office was supposed to open, someone came. But not to open the box office.

"We aren't opening it because this is the Holiday season". (It is 12/21).

"But the website says 'open daily, 5pm until close'". I protested.

"Do you only open when events happen?" Another prospective patron asked.

"Yes, but there aren't any until the after the holidays."

"What about tomorrow night, it's on the board?" I asked.

"We aren't working door for that one."

Now mind you, there were NO signs posted about hours. NO notice on website. NO indication of this at the phone number. All this is enough to make matter-of-fact tone stating that true box-office policy in no way resembles the advertised policy infuriating. This was truly unprofessional, utterly disappointing, and disrespectful to the time and concerns of artists and patrons alike.
