the Raconteurs @ Coachella 2008 (more by Ryan Muir)

As I have said before, and I don't think people who disagree are complete idiots, but I really think Black Lips are absolutely horrible and have no talent whatsoever.

Posted by j | May 29, 2008 2:57 PM

BV, forget streaming it, download it for free as a podcast through their NPR concert series. The narrator sounds like a tool with his lame "the house lights are off" intro. But, there is that show as well as KEXP and some other free concerts through podcasts

i was at the show in dc. i've never listened to racontuers or white stripes before aside from what's on the the radio but i like black lips and was curious to see jack white live. it was a great show. 930 club is only 1200 capacity so despite not pushing or getting there early i was like 20 feet from the stage dead center. jack white killed it and brendan benson sounded great also. really solid set of like meat and potatoes rock and roll.

Posted by Anonymous | May 29, 2008 3:29 PM

The Racs are sick. The jury is still out as to whether the Black Lips suck balls or not (imo), but they should be honored to be the opener. Anybody who considers themself a "rock" fan and doesn't dig The Racs is a questionable character, indeed. Their live show smokes!

Posted by Anonymous | May 29, 2008 3:51 PM

how varied have the setlists been ? worth seeing 2 of the shows ? or is it going to be the same show 3 nights ? hmmmmmm..

Posted by Anonymous | May 29, 2008 3:53 PM

The setlists have been pretty much the same every night. but imo it is always worth seeing Jack as much as possible.

Posted by Anonymous | May 29, 2008 3:58 PM

agree. jack white is the best musician on the scene right now. no one comes close. any chance i get to see him, i'm in.

Posted by Anonymous | May 29, 2008 5:52 PM

garbage..where are meg white's dirty pillows?

Posted by hipster poseur | May 29, 2008 6:00 PM

im seeing them on my birthday in NYC. the 3rd day.

Posted by Anonymous | May 29, 2008 9:43 PM

They mix it up a little, but not much. Maybe rotate one or two songs in/out of the list, and change the covers they do, but it's generally the same. They only have about 25 songs to choose from if they stick to the released catalog, so that's not that much.

Any chance to see Jack White is a pleasure, and if you're missing that point, you might as well go find a Dan Deacon or Fuck Buttons thread to post in, instead.

what side of the stage does jack stand on? thx

Great performance completely fucked by a terrible venue. The sound there tonite was like getting hit in the face with a frying pan for an hour and 15 minutes. I know its become the thing to bash Terminal Shit but seriously at this point if you defend the sound in this place you truly have no discerning ears. It really is a shit fuck place to see a band. With all the cranes falling around NYC, why cant one please fall on T5 with the people from Bowery Presents inside at the time. Thank you once again BP for taking a great band and removing the crunch and warmth that makes them sound so wonderful. Sometimes it really sucks to live in NYC. How jealous am i of people in Washington DC who got to see them at the 9:30 club a few days ago. Ugh.

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2008 1:30 AM

I guess expecting the worst going in, didn't have too much of a problem with the sound and I was at both DC shows.

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2008 2:24 AM

Again, if you dont have a problem with the sound at this place you really have no discerning ears. It is just not an opinion. It really is stunningly bad.

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2008 2:39 AM

I personally think Bowery's sound has gone to shit so I must be going deaf.

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2008 2:51 AM

"I personally think Bowery's sound has gone to shit so I must be going deaf."

Or plainly just an idiot. Pick your poison.

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2008 3:02 AM

I agree with Anon 1:30AM. Great performance as usual. Terrible, terrible sound. Roseland is my least favorite venue in the city. However thanks to Bowery Presents extremely overselling this show, they managed to turn this into an even worse experience than it would have been at Roseland. Do yourselves a favor, try to sell your tickets if you have any for Saturday or Sunday. Catch them out of town or wait until they play anywhere else. Even an arena show would be a better experience than this.

? = Keep it Clean

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2008 6:50 AM

Charlie Parker - Keep it Clean

I went to the river, couldn't get across
I jumped on your papa ’cause I thought he was a horse, now
Roll him over, give him a Coca-Cola
Lemon soda, saucer of ice cream
Takes soap and water for to keep it clean.

Up she jumped, down she fell
Her mouth flew open like a mussel shell, now

Roll him over, give him a Coca-Cola
Lemon soda, saucer of ice cream
Takes soap and water for to keep it clean.

Your sister was a tabby, your daddy was a bear
Put a muzzle on your mama ’cause she had bad hair, now

Roll him over, give a Coca-Cola
Lemon soda, saucer of ice cream
Takes soap and water for to keep it clean.

If you want to go to heaven when you D-I-E
You got to put on your collar and your T-I-E, now

Roll him over, give him a Coca-Cola
Lemon soda, saucer of ice cream
Takes soap and water for to keep it clean.

Run here doctor, run here fast
See what's the matter with his yas-yas-yas, now

Roll him over, give him a Coca-Cola
Lemon soda, saucer of ice cream
Takes soap and water for to keep it clean.

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2008 7:09 AM

One of Jack's versions:

jacks rendition:

Yeah, I went to the river, could not get across
Rode your papa 'cause I thought he was a horse, now
Rolled him over, give him Coca-Cola
Lemon soda, saucer of ice cream
Takes soap and water, now,
You got to keep it clean.

Well, up she jumped, down she fell
Her mouth flew open like a mussel shell, now
Rolled her over, give her Coca-Cola
Lemon soda, saucer of ice cream
Takes soap and water, now,
To try to keep her clean.

Your sister was a teddy, your daddy was a bear
I put a muzzle on your mama 'cause she had bad hair, now
I rolled em' over, give em' Coca-Cola
Lemon soda, saucer of ice cream
Takes soap and water, now,
Cause the girls got to keep it clean..

If you want to hear Jack White screamin' 'oh yeah,
Better get down to the water, wash your yas-yas-yas, girl.
Take on the water, give em' Coca Cola
Lemon soda, and a saucer of ice cream.
Come on girls, you've got to keep it clean!

If you want to ???
Come on and pull the trigger, D-O-G gots to go. (???)
Sit on the corner, give em' Coca-Cola
Lemon soda, and a saucer of ice cream.
And soap and water, and you know you've got to keep it clean.

Alright, this is for you fellows, so listen
If you want to go to heaven when you D-I-E
Put on the collar and your T-I-E, boys,
Come on over, and get some Coca-Cola,
Lemon soda, a saucer of ice cream.
Takes soap and water, cause you boys have to keep it clean.

Run to the doctor, but you run there fast
See what's the matter with your yas-yas-yas, girl
Roll her over, and give her Coca Cola,
Lemon soda, and someone get ice cream.
Come on, don't you want us,
If you do, you've got to keep it clean, yeah.

Does anyone know if they allowed the "common people" upstairs along the railings for the show, or had it VIP'd?

Im hella short and think my best chance tonight is getting a spot along the railing...

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2008 10:05 AM

Can someone let me know what time the Raconteurs went on and what time the show ended?

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2008 10:25 AM

The sound was OK for the Raconteurs, but was absolutely dreadful for the Black Lips. It could have been better for the Raconteurs.

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2008 10:29 AM

Black Lips - 9:00 to 9:35
Raconteurs - 10:15 to around 11:45

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2008 10:45 AM

Second level towards the front of the stage on the left was for vips. All other areas were not.

Posted by Mike | May 31, 2008 11:21 AM

this show was incredibly mediocre!
i really hate T5.

Posted by Dan | May 31, 2008 12:44 PM

I had a great time I was right up front by the stage... no problems at all... I would not sell your tickets... Buy them somewhere if you don't have and just get there early.

Posted by anonymous | May 31, 2008 1:50 PM

complaint. Whine. Bitch.
Thanks for listening.

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2008 1:57 PM

"I had a great time I was right up front by the stage... no problems at all... I would not sell your tickets... Buy them somewhere if you don't have and just get there early."

I was up front also right against the barrier. I would say the sound being atrocious is a huge problem. Being up front did not alleviate that problem. The guy above probably has no idea what good sound is or more likely does not care at all.

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2008 2:20 PM

i didn't have a problem w/ the sound but man that place was jam packed. i couldn't move. i think they sold it past cap last night.

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2008 2:57 PM

What actually makes the crowding worse is that the VIP area upstairs is a big waste of space and only about 50 - 60 % full. It sends a subtle message that the venue cares a lot more for the comfort of the VIPs than for the many regular ticketholders who are fighting for a spot just to see the stage.

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2008 3:23 PM

"i didn't have a problem w/ the sound but man that place was jam packed. i couldn't move. i think they sold it past cap last night"

Oh and i forgot to mention i also love 128kb mp3's and I think the best place to hear a band soundwise is Madison Square Garden. Kills places like Bowery Ballroom.

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2008 3:27 PM

so how packed were the non-vip parts upstairs? would a 4'10" girl have any chance of seeing anything from one of the balconies anywhere but the rail? how early would i need to get there to get no the upstairs rail?? thanks!!

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2008 4:10 PM

VIP sections at venues of that size are pretty common. Most bands wouldn't play a venue that didn't have a reserved section where their guests can watch the show.

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2008 4:16 PM

I've personally never seen a VIP section that big in venues of comparable size. There are also two levels on that side of the balcony (higher one is just a step up). They could reserve the lower part on the railing for VIPs and open the upper part. The bottom line is if you can't open up more space, don't oversell the place.

If you're under 6 feet, I would get there very early and have someone to hold your spot when nature calls.

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2008 4:32 PM

One thing I will say for Terminal 5 is that there are big bars with several bartenders and very quick service. They even have a halfway decent beer selection, including Stella on tap. I'm not saying it's Octoberfest, but if there's anything I hate, it's when the beer choice is either Heineken or Amstel Light. I would be much happier if these two beers were removed from existence.

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2008 4:41 PM

the sound was horrible... i am a huge jack white fan and i thought the show was mediocre... i think the venue had a lot to do with that. too hard to see/hear what was going on.

Posted by brittany | May 31, 2008 4:42 PM

^^^^^

Then you've never been to Irving Plaza, where they often close the entire upstairs area for VIP.

Posted by VIP N*GGA | May 31, 2008 4:42 PM

jesus- what's wrong with heineken?

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2008 4:47 PM

Don't look at me, you shouldn't be drinking alcohol in the first place.

Posted by Jesus Christ | May 31, 2008 4:56 PM

If I have to explain what's wrong with Heineken, we're obviously not going to see eye to eye on the issue. Please take no offense.

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2008 4:57 PM

Why, is VIP N*GGA pregnant?

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2008 4:58 PM

seriously, what's wrong with heineken? is it because it's popular?

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2008 5:02 PM

Jack's wife Karen Elson was up there in VIP and also Brendan's girlfriend was up there.

Posted by anonymous | May 31, 2008 5:04 PM

Doesn't James Bond drink Heineken?

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2008 5:05 PM

Stella is not good beer. Probably the worst Belgian beer. Heineken is very skunky beer, but from what I heard, it's not bad when served fresh in Holland.

Posted by Anonymous | May 31, 2008 5:36 PM

@"Jesus Christ":

The God *I* believe in likes to imbibe, MISTER.

Posted by Bono | May 31, 2008 5:45 PM

Oh god, I knew if I mentioned Stella, some even worse beer snob would emerge from the woodwork. I set myself up for that one. Yes, Stella is the worst Belgian beer, but it's better than Heineken, and not because it is less popular than Heineken. In NYC, it's actually very popular. I just hate the taste of Heineken and Amstel Light (a.k.a. Heineken light). I started a very silly argument here, so I would like to digress now. My point was only that the selection is better than Amstel Light/Heineken only, in my not so humble opinion.

have tix for sunday night - they say doors 7, show at 8, but do the black lips really not come on till 9? thanks.

Posted by Anonymous | June 1, 2008 3:00 AM

They had a few tickets at the door for the second show and people were selling tickets below face.

Posted by Anonymous | June 1, 2008 3:23 AM

i thought the show was pretty good but how annoying could brendan benson possible be singing directly to his girlfriend over and over again! gag me. jack, on the other hand, put on one hell of a show for the audience. and the black lips were great as always but, yeah, as has been said, the sound wasn't very good.

Posted by Anonymous | June 1, 2008 3:35 AM

great show, but we tried to leave a little early. found a clearly marked "Exit" and pushed the door open only to have it shoved back in our faces by a Terminal 5 staffer standing outside who told us we couldn't use that door. when i argued, he asked if i had a pass. wtf!?? it was a fucking EXIT!

it wasn't even a door leading to an artist's area, we were at the very back of the bar.

i was drunk and feeling well within my rights, so i forced the door open and burst out, but soon found myself grappling with an angry doorman...who eventually let up. we got out, those guys have no right to stop us like that.

nice policy, Terminal 5.

Posted by sf | June 1, 2008 9:18 AM

There was a kid at the saturday show screaming "fire crotch" to Jack's wife in the VIP and he was also motioning for her to go down on him. Can the 16-year-old virgins please stay on Long Island tonight?

Posted by Anonymous | June 1, 2008 9:26 AM

what time do the black lips come on?

Posted by Anonymous | June 1, 2008 9:53 AM

Great show. The Raconteurs were fantastic. The Nick Zanner cameo during the Encore was pretty sweet as well. Definitely worth checking out. While the sound wasn't amazing, it was good enough to not distract from last nights show. Too bad the same could not be same about the Black Lips. The sound was really really bad and their performance could not hold up. It's too bad because I heard they were supposed to be good live but they really weren't that sweet.

The one big complaint I have about the place is the exit route. You have almost 3000 people and you have these two narrow hallways (one with merch dealers, one with bathrooms) that everyone crams into this place at the same time. No bullshit, a fight actually broke out between a couple of people. It probably started because of all the pushing to get out the door. And security was pretty damn slow to get in and resolve it.

I know T5 has a bunch of problems but I think that is one that needs some serious work on it.

Posted by Anonymous | June 1, 2008 9:53 AM

Are people actually saying that Saturday night show was just OK??? It was absolutely ripping and jack white is one of the best guitarists alive. The guy was going crazy on stage. He was more into the show than anyone else in the place. The venue sucked, but who cares, no lines for beer.

Posted by Anonymous | June 1, 2008 10:10 AM

black lips come on pretty promptly according to show start time, so right around 8, but like 953 says their sound set up is really bad and its much to big of a venue for you to get a good black lips show, although they do play a decent set list of like 45 mins. but yeah too big and too bad of sound to get what they can do. raconteurs were amazing though, with jack crashing little jack into his amp and sending the stack flying at the end of the set, and zinner appearance, really good

Posted by Anonymous | June 1, 2008 10:16 AM

was that dean fertita playing the off instruments?

Posted by Anonymous | June 1, 2008 10:19 AM

That's Mark (Walker I think?). Awesome job on the fiddle, keys and backup vocals. I think Dean is still with Queens of the Stone Age. No band introductions the first two nights which was a little odd.

Posted by Anonymous | June 1, 2008 10:31 AM

Anyone have setlist from Sat night's show?

Posted by Anonymous | June 1, 2008 10:55 AM

anonymous @ 1:59am: That was the worst sounding YouTube video I've ever heard. Maybe T5 really is that bad.

I thought the first night was amazing, except for sound issues blah, blah, blah...

Posted by Anonymous | June 1, 2008 10:55 AM

Tix for tonight on TMaster now.

"The one big complaint I have about the place is the exit route. You have almost 3000 people and you have these two narrow hallways (one with merch dealers, one with bathrooms) that everyone crams into this place at the same time"

Did you ever think that maybe they don't want 3000 people to all exit on to the street at the exact same time?

Posted by Anonymous | June 1, 2008 12:15 PM

ANYONE HAVE THE SETLIST FROM SATURDAY NIGHT'S SHOW?

Posted by Anonymous | June 1, 2008 1:03 PM

"Did you ever think that maybe they don't want 3000 people to all exit on to the street at the exact same time?"

Yeah, considering the street they are on (west 56th between 11th and 12th) gets just so much traffic. Whats going to happen, we are going to get run over by the hot dog vender's? They are in the middle of car dealerships at 1230 at night, I doubt the neighbors will really complain.

Definitely better then the pushing and shoving and fighting that came from people getting crammed through those exits. What if there was a stampede or something awful like the Great White show because of this?

Posted by Anonymous | June 1, 2008 1:36 PM

does anyone know what time the raconteurs go on tonight (sunday)?

Posted by fausto carmona | June 1, 2008 6:38 PM

Last night Raconteurs went on at exactly 10:17 p.m.

Posted by Jesus H. Christ | June 1, 2008 7:00 PM

I went to Friday's show and thought it was awesome. However, the sound does suck a bit in that place.

3:35am - I thought I was the only one who noticed Benson doing that. Totally, totally weak. He even changed the lyrics for "Shades of Black" for her. Felt like i was being used to try to get him laid.

Anyway, aside from that the show was was great. Jack Black is a superstar.
