Mates of State @ Mercury Lounge, NYC - pics
photos by Bao Nguyen

Mates of State played a semi-private, early show (7:02 on the dot) at Mercury Lounge in NYC last night (May 21). The show was in honor of their new album that came out on Barsuk one day earlier - the same reason they appeared on Conan O'Brien the night before. The show was crowded, but not packed - probably at lesat in part because of the unclear age limit. The free tickets given out at record stores didn't come with a 21+ disclaimer. Kori Gardner mentioned being tired, and being excited to have a guitar player (who was one of two backing band members). They played a mix of old and new songs and a cover of Nico's "These Days". More pictures below...

I made a similar comment on the previous entry, buuut... the Conan performance made it evident that Kori's voice was shot. This wouldn't be so bad, but I've noticed it live pretty often enough. I've always chalked it up to maybe not hearing correctly, but hearing it on Conan made it stand out. It makes me wonder what goes on when they do recording because the recorded versions, she's on key. This album made me bitter and I'm sad to say I really kind of don't like them any more.

I only like musicians who look cute and sound good on tv. Can't wait for the Jonas Brothers show!

Wow, what a bunch of d-bags in the earlier comments! First of all, she looks cute! Second of all, its easy to comment on someone's looks from behind a computer keyboard. Why not put some pictures of yourself up there for public comment? Just for fun?

That's not what I meant at all. I mean her voice sucks live and is probably doctoring it in recording, which is not cool in my opinion. Their overall sound got boring and her lacking voice can't make up for it.

Anon 5:02, you obviously did not see them play mercury. She sound amazing especially during "For the Actor". To those who think her voice is crap live, you need to get your ears checked. I'm sure they had an off day in Conan and it is incredibly hard to play a national TV show, not that you would know.

I've seen them perform 7-8 times over the past 5 years. Her voice has been shoddy the last few. I'm wondering if the tamer music is reflecting the fact that her voice is getting bad (can't belt as much, etc.).
