M.I.A. is playing a very expensive show at MoMA

Tuesday, June 10, 2008Inmyhouse also pointed out that this pricey benefit matches the date James Murphy and Pat Mahoney are scheduled to play at the same museum venue. The Party in the Garden Benefit Gala will honor two great New Yorkers: our beloved MoMA Trustee and patron of the arts Donald B. Marron, and acclaimed multi-award-winning televison, stage, and film director, writer, and producer Mike Nichols. Proceeds will benefit the Museum's general operating fund, helping to make possible our award-winning educational programs and the care, study, and exhibition of our collection.
Cocktails at 7:00 p.m.
Dinner at 8:00 p.m.
After-Dinner Dance from nine to midnight with Sweets and Champagne
Performance by M.I.A.Tables, dinner tickets, and after party tickets are available online.
M.I.A. also has a bunch of cheaper shows coming up including McCarren Pool in Brooklyn on June 6th with Holy Fuck.

id love to see the pretentious fucks who go to this. Jokes on them for spending that kind of cash- donate to starving people before museums douches.
Posted by broski | May 12, 2008 1:37 PM
Is the cost tax-deductible? If you are in the 28 or 35 tax bracket, the cost is not that high. Still expensive, but you get to see a performer in a small venue.

broski, i'm sure you can be called a douche for a lot of the money you spend that you always have the option to give to starving people. The fact that you or I don't have that kind of money, does not mean it's an amount that should not be given to a museum.

let's be real, i think the burmese cyclone victims could use this money more than MoMA.

Is MIA performing at the afterdinner dance or at the dinner? My friends and I are hoping to get $250 tickets for the dance party and see MIA.

sure the Burmese could use it..
but the military junta that runs the place has the final say.

there are many venues to donate money to that are NOT filtering money through the government. uscampaignforburma.org is one of them, you can also donate through unicef.

MIA sure loves that income! Didn't I see her doing modeling for some magazine ad! Truely gangsta!
She follows the standard recipe for rap so well...
1. Where you grew up
2. Flocabulary
3. Makin money

Does the $250 ticket include the M.I.A. performance? That's a hot ticket, so up close and personal.

I was just thinking of getting tickets to see Santogold since it's the same thing only cheaper. Right?

unless you're going out into the street and handing out that money to the needy, most of your donation will disappear down some deep pockets.
i agree that the poor need aid, but museums need donations too. shame on you for trying to lord it over someone who chooses to donate to the latter, douche 1:37.
Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2008 4:02 PM
oh, and douche 2:32 - if you think we're in a military state here, why don't you go live in iran or north korea or like half of africa's countries, if you don't know any better. i'm sure you'll be much happier with the quality of life and freedom of speech over there.

............................that's the sound of mia's street cred going down the drain.
Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2008 4:11 PM
Yeah, 1:37! You live in America, where you're not allowed freedom of speech without some self-righteous prig jumpin' down your throat! So shut up and LOVE AMERIKKKA! It's perfect and it is illegal to say anything bad in a public forum about this country!
Posted by Mid Fingg | May 12, 2008 4:19 PM
There you go, Mid Fingg! Finally we recognize that America is the worst country in the world, and white people are keeping everyone down, and anyone breaking $50K is to blame for third world plight! Now pass the fries.

The sooner people realize our government is only a shade less corrupt than the governments of Third World countries....
Oh, wait, what am I saying? The majority of Amerikka doesn't give a FUCK about anything other than themselves! Even when gas hits $10 a gallon, Amerikkkans won't give a fuckin' shit other than to moan and bitch and then hand over their fuckin' credit cards and pay. Easier than helping neighbors in need....
M.I.A.--who gives a fuckin' shit? If some dipshit wants to pay $1000 to see her for 45 minutes, that's their right. God bless Amerikkka.
Posted by Mid Fingg | May 12, 2008 4:45 PM
I believe "developing countries" is the preferred nomenclature, brochette.
Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2008 4:58 PM
Donating money to things is not a zero-sum game. If someone wants to donate $5000 to MOMA it doesn't mean its stopping them from doing the same for a tragedy.
Is today a holiday or something? Seems like all the little kiddies are posting nonsense.

new orleans can go flush itself down the Gulf
Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2008 6:15 PM
Anyone else tired of the MIA thing? It was cool for about five months, but boy has it gotten tired.
Posted by I am a hipster | May 12, 2008 9:13 PM
hey 4:06, go fuck yourself. you fucking republican. just another one of those assholes who says shit like "love it or leave it." you fucking redneck.
Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2008 10:46 PM
Is anyone else having problems getting tickets? Is it sold out? I keep getting "not able to provide tickets" error.
Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2008 11:07 PM
6:15-> as somebody who has been born and raised in new orleans, one of the most creative and vibrant cultures in america, it's disheartening to hear someone say that my family and i should be "flushed down the gulf" as if we were waste in some figurative toilet bowl. just think about the thousands of people that died, children who lost their moms, people who lost their homes and businesses. we are working hard every day here to come back, i'm a physician who works double shifts and moonlights every night almost to compensate for the paucity of doctors and nurses. not to mention the music that comes out of new orleans is some of the most original and powerful stuff around...this is a music forum after all...ask anyone who has been to jazz fest. there's alot of sharp children here, many of them musicians and artists. maybe you should think again before you wish one of the most unique cities in our country be erased from the map.

10:46 - so anyone who actually likes living here is a redneck? hey, didn't you say you'd leave four years ago, like to france where you can smoke sean penn's cock? you don't have to be a republican to enjoy your job, car, and being able to see all the indie rock you want - and to know that you wouldn't have all of that in a "military state."
Posted by Anonymous | May 13, 2008 12:30 AM
12:12 - ever seen one of those bumper stickers that say "New Orleans: Proud To Call It Hell"?
there's a reason for that.
Posted by Anonymous | May 13, 2008 10:17 AM
I also am having problems getting tickets. I wanted to see if I get any errors selecting higher price tickets, but I am afraid of getting charged. Did anyone get thru?
