Anyone else hear one of Pavement's signature sounds, the gurgling guitar/electcronic in the beginning of the song?....and the guitar intro sounds like something from Radiohead. usually i would hate on a band borrowing sounds from others but it seems MMJ steal from some of the best (and by the way I keep reading Jim James and Marvin Gaye comparisons....MMJ may be great but James is NO Marvin)......solid performance.

McGruber!

for the life of me i CAN NOT see what the big effin deal is with this band.

Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2008 4:20 PM

the big effin deal is their live show. This SNL stuff is cool, but seeing them in concert (especially at night) is a whole different ballgame.

They are an incredible live band, particularly outdoors in a festival atmosphere. It's a shame they're only playing Bonnaroo this year.

McGruber was the funniest thing on the show. I'm not sure I can dislike anything MMJ does. Them and Marvin is apples and oranges.

"I'm Amazed" is real pretty.

4:20...i used to love this band. i agree, i think it still moves was ok but lost a lot of their charm, z had a few good songs but totally mediocre direction, and now this album is just lame. i dont get it and i dont want to get it.

at dawn was one of the finest albums of the decade though. ive met jim a few times around the city and he's always a nice guy.

They played Coachella. And are touring again...they are in perpetual tour it seems. Great band. Probably one of the best bands in America.

Hmm. Really? Sure you want that as your final answer? Sonic Youth, Wilco, Flaming Lips, Yo La Tengo and on and on and on...and you're going with MMJ? Interesting.

MMJ are one of those bands I can't imagine how its possible not to like them, but I guess that just goes to show there is some merit Einstein's relativity. One of the things that makes their early records so enduring is their unassuming nature, elusive yet gorgous melodies, and a warmth that only a very small amount of bands can lay claim too. You don't necessarily get all of it with the first few listens, but once you do you are stuck with those songs for life. With bands like Band of Horses and Fleet Foxes picking up on the threads MMJ started, Z and Evil Urges are the type of albums that any self-respecting evolving band should make, they challange people's preconceptions, they are epic in nature, and completely render useless the lables people used to be able to catagorize you as (ex. it would no longer be entirely accurate to call them alt. country or southern rock). The danger with going pop to the extent MMJ have is that your songs can become cloying and disposable (though in three years Z hasn't aged a day), but I think the new material is substantial enough far outlive the normal "buzz band" life cycle. I think it shows a lot of character for a band to tread outside of it's comfort zone, and MMJ are worthy of a tremendous kudos for releasing five consecuative great records.

and sadly, band of horses was nothing compared to the roots they grew from, that of carissa's wierd.

Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2008 5:40 PM

i'm sure carissa's weird is all well and good, but jeez, band of horses is a great band ... bridwell knows how to rock, and he's got that melody thing, too ... tweedy, jim james, m. ward .. britt daniel .. rockers who can write a bloody song ...

here is what it comes down to: some bands hit it, some don't. some have 2 or 3 records and fade away, some are lucky enough to keep going. too many bands on these fucking blogs are here today gone tomorrow...here is a raise of my glass to bands with a career, and to MMJ blowing the roof off of RCMH on June 20

Posted by Anonymous | May 12, 2008 6:35 PM

rcmh will be epic! i'm gonna be soooo high ....

He may not be Marvin Gaye but he is an amazing singer. The song he sings in I'm Not There is my favourite part of the film.

this is actually a good band. no hipster bullshit, just solid and skillful tunes.

which is why IT SUCKS

"I heard Red Lasso tries to install a bot when you open its videos do it can report your keystrokes"

not true.

MacGruber was one of the only sketches I saw, and it had me convinced that SNL may actually be good again.

I have to be honest and say I liked the face Bill Heder gave in that dining room bit when all the men are staring at those two women. Bad bit, great faces.

I've seen Wilco and Yo La Tengo this year and the Flaming Lips a couple years ago (and will get a chance this summer). Having seen MMJ live at Coachella they are definitely up there. Unlike some others, their last two albums have really brought me on board. Don't miss em if they come around.

MMJ rocks the bells. These are fine performances. Evil Urges is overall a solid endeavor and I'm Amazed should be the jam of the summer. For my money, Drive-By Truckers, MMJ, and Centro-matic are the best live and studio bands running right now.
