Good video, good song.

I realize that Sigur Ros will always be popular among New York City hipsters, college kids and potheads across the world, but there is a reason this band is not as big as Radiohead. They just aren't that great.

Nine out of ten people either never heard of them or think they sound horrible. Most Americans will laugh in your face when you play them Sigur Ros.

This new song is good though. The rest of the world may even agree.

Hey buddy, how many records a band sells or if their played on the radio doesn't determine talent nor greatness.

Posted by Anonymous | May 28, 2008 6:18 PM

Anon 6:12, comparing Sigur Ros to Radiohead? If you want, ok, but Sigur Ros is a completely different band with different interests, different motives, different moods, and they are not trying to make popular music.

one of the most uninformed comments i've seen on here yet. way to go!

Posted by Anonymous | May 28, 2008 6:29 PM

they seem to love what they do and it seems they're making quite a good living at it. seems pretty "great" to me.

I'm pretty sure they're well respected around the world as well, not just NYC. Unless selling out shows worldwide doesn't count.

I guess if you're not Radiohead you suck right?!

Time to put the instruments down everyone, it's just not worth it if you're not already in the band Radiohead.

Posted by Anonymous | May 28, 2008 6:32 PM

let me guess... and not only is Sigur Ros not as good as Radiohead, they're not as good as Pavement either? Goodness gracious!

Posted by Spinach | May 28, 2008 6:58 PM

I'd invite a comparison between Daft Punk and Radiohead, but pitting these two otherwordly acts against one another would lead to the end of blog-kind as we know it.

Posted by Anonymous | May 28, 2008 7:22 PM

I really can't stand Sigur Ros. How pretentious do they really have to be singing in a made-up language and all. I don't care if the music they make is good (because it is), their elf lyrics just irritate me way too much to listen to them. Maybe their song in English on the new album will be good.

Posted by Howard P. Flochango | May 28, 2008 7:51 PM

with that said, I can definitely understand how someone would like them. I wouldn't go as far as anonymous 6:12 and say that it's obvious why they aren't great, because clearly they have a pretty solid audience. I was simply stating why I personally don't like them. And yes, I much prefer pavement, daft punk, or radiohead to sigur ros.

some think a cucumber tastes better pickled..

Posted by Anonymous | May 28, 2008 8:02 PM

Howard, I am curious if you speak Icelandic. I am going to guess No. I certainly don't, so I really can't tell which songs are song in Icelandic, or which (couple) songs are essentially Jonsi scatting. It doesn't matter to me because I find his vocals to be beautiful and perfectly match their music. Pretentious? Far from it.

Posted by jwelsh | May 28, 2008 8:14 PM

this new single extracts every reason why I like Sigur Ros from Sigur Ros.

Posted by Dan | May 28, 2008 8:55 PM

jwelsh, obviously i don't speak islandic but how the hell could it not be pretentious to make up your own language and sing all (or many of) your songs in that language?

Posted by Howard P. Flochango | May 28, 2008 8:59 PM

what does it matter if it is a "made up lanugage", it's just sounds and melodies that add an extra layer of the song anyway, they were just pleasing sounds to sigur ros. it's not a language, there's no grammar or anything, it's just sounds

Posted by Anonymous | May 28, 2008 9:36 PM

and the voice is just another instrument

Posted by Anonymous | May 28, 2008 9:43 PM

Perhaps I like some lyrics with music that isn't instrumental.

"this new single extracts every reason why I like Sigur Ros from Sigur Ros."

perfectly put.

Posted by robert doosh | May 28, 2008 9:54 PM

i just was saying i don't think it's pretentious to use a voice as an instrument

Posted by Anonymous | May 28, 2008 9:58 PM

"this new single extracts every reason why I like Sigur Ros from Sigur Ros."

They can't do something new for once?

Posted by Anonymous | May 28, 2008 10:15 PM

video reminds me of von trier's "the idiots" quite a bit

Posted by jesse | May 28, 2008 10:47 PM

Anyone hoping they'd sound more like they did on Von should listen to 'Wolves in the Throne Room.'

This seems like Animal Collective lite to me.

Posted by najork | May 28, 2008 10:53 PM

reading comments like some of the above make people who like sigur ros like them even more. i hate to think about idiots who make laughable comments & comparisons liking the same bands i do. it makes me cringe. thankfully, that isn't the case with sigur ros. i dont care WHO or WHY you don't like sigur ros - actually i'm happy that you don't and i'm sure sigur ros are too.

Posted by Anonymous | May 29, 2008 12:15 AM

they can do something new.
they did it, with this.
i'm just leaving a nice squishy personal comment from my cold, cold heart.
i just don't like it.
hence "comment."

^^^^

sorry, that was me. it forgot my name or something.

Posted by Dan | May 29, 2008 8:43 AM

i love the new song. sure its not the same sigur ros we've grown to love, but theres something really exciting about it, and i think the video captures it perfectly.

Posted by Anonymous | May 29, 2008 9:45 AM

haha, why is that dude sitting in the jungle, nude, banging sticks against a tree when there are beautiful naked woman running all over the place with his homies?

Posted by sam C | May 29, 2008 10:11 AM

i may be alone here, but i actually prefer sigur ros to radiohead. sorry, radiohead just doesn't rock out like they used to, and as for experimental stuff, mum used to do a better job. i realize a bunch of people are gonna shit bricks reading this, but let it be known that there is at least one person in the world who thinks radiohead is ok but essentially OVERRATED.

Posted by Anonymous | May 29, 2008 11:00 AM

I can see how some would like Sigur Ros better than Radiohead. I like Radiohead better though.

Posted by Anonymous | May 29, 2008 11:04 AM

guys, guys. can't we just all agree that ryan mcginley is getting paid again?

Posted by dola | May 29, 2008 11:19 AM

Ryan McGinley rocks. The video is better than the song. For me, the band has about killer 2 tracks on each album, and the rest of it is almost filler. However, SR with Amiina was one of the best live shows I will ever see.

Posted by Jethro | May 29, 2008 4:03 PM

as an avid sigur rós listener who likes their moody, slow stuff, this is so completely new to me and at first i wanted to hate it, but after the first 30 seconds i loved it.
i think the nudity is used in a tasteful manner.

it's a great song for this oncoming summer, no?

Posted by Anonymous | May 29, 2008 5:46 PM

This new song is a possible new direction for SR but either you like it or not there is no need to compare it to their previous work or the work of others.

Take music for what it is enjoy it or dont. I personally enjoy this new song quite a bit and the video is well done as well.

Posted by Sutor | May 30, 2008 12:57 PM

anon 5:46. at first i was yearning for the typical slow feel of the music but i've grown to love gobbledigook.

the name's so silly.
and yes, it's very good for the summer.

Anyone who suggests that the "average American" wouldn't like Sigur Ros needs to burn a cd and give it to anyone in their family.

I've done so for my parents and my grandparents. They absolutely love them and have cried listening to their albums.

Seeing my grandma respond to some of the heavier stuff was super exiting too.

To the douchebag who compared the popularity of Sigur Ros to that of Radiohead's:

Eat your words... Who gives a rat's ass if one is *bigger* than the other?! Sigur Ros and Radiohead are both great bands. They might have some similar sonic qualities, but otherwise they couldn't be anymore different.

Sure, Radiohead performs in massive sell-out venues and they make Network appearances in America, but they are not household names (except maybe if those households contained hipsters, college kids and the ilk). After their hit single "Creep", they barely got any mainstream radio airplay. Throughout the years, their material just got progressively more complex and edgy.

Therefore, have you considered how many *Americans* would laugh (or cringe, for that matter) if they heard more than half of Radiohead's output?

Have you considered that many Americans wouldn't have the interest of doing so since they're too busy swooning over the likes of James Blunt or John Mayer, or better yet the crouches of Brittney or Lindsey?

If you truly want to equate musical quality with popularity, then tell me why does Coldplay gets tons more airplay and attention than that of Radiohead's? (don't even factor in the Gwenneth Paltrow connection)
