shame their newest album is such a letdown

Didn't Jarvis Cocker pwn them in an interview? That must suck. Being pwned in a song by Jarvis, on the other hand, is a great honor.

It's like a Jaime Hernandez band come to life. Sans chicas.

I saw some buzz about this band and listened to some songs. I'm old enough to have loved Blur, Suede, Stone Roses, Pulp etc... and a lot of the early Brit-pop shit.

What I read about this band made me think they were in that realm, but when I listened to it, my impression was that the songs weren't there.

THOUGHTS?

I think their songs are exciting and the male-songwriter-writing-to-a-female-perspective gives them a bit of an old-school Brill Building vibe as well. Their new album isn't as good as the first, but at least they're being progressive musicians instead of going for a guaranteed paycheck. I'm looking forward to the Bowery show tonite and can't wait to hear what they do next. Hopefully the poor album sales won't deter them.

i love them, and i don't associate them with britpop at all (and am plenty old enough to have been around for britpop). excellent live band, too.

and jarvis didn't pwn them, exactly. he doesn't like the frequency of kate's voice, but gave the band props for the songs. this isn't the same as saying a band sucks (which he did say about little man tate in the same interview).

me, i like kate's voice, but i do know what he means. (i can't listen to the cardigans solely because of nina persson's voice.)
