benfit show at the Masonic Temple

John Darnielle (aka The Mountain Goats) played solo at Friday night's benefit show at the Brooklyn Masonic Temple (May 16, 2008). He took fan suggestions for the setlist which ended up including a lot of older stuff that he usually doesn't play, as well as a new song called "Wizard Buys A Hat," which he said is the worst song title he's ever written. Rock Plaza Central, John Oliver and Dave Hill were also on the bill. More pictures from the evening below....

John Darnielle was also reading from his new Black Sabbath book at Housing Works on Saturday.

Rock Plaza Central also played Union Hall on Saturday.

Dave Hill & John Oliver have other shows coming up, including together.

This review is totally wrong. He worked off a written setlist, which he said that the beginning of the show would include a lot of old numbers. Of the 16 songs he played, there was TWO fan requests that he played, "Wild Sage" and "Going to Scotland". "Scotland" replaced "Jaipur" which he said he didn't want to play, and Sage was added by request. The rest of the written list was performed in order.

About "Wizard": "stupidist song title I've ever come up with".

"This review is totally wrong."

If you clicked on the link behind "took fan suggestions", you would have seen that the "written setlist" was in fact based on fan suggestions.

Right, aware of the topic, having read its four pages the night of the show. Why don't you tell me how many songs requested in that topic made it onto John's list? How about 1.

god I hate john darnielle so much

yo Anon 5:21, you haven't finished reading the topic yet?

The one that you never bothered to read before posting that the setlist was based on suggestions in that topic?

Come on, its only four pages. Finish up and then all you have to do is count to 1.

The Mountain Goats were great, but Dave Hill was the least funny, most misogynistic comedian I've heard in a while.

"among many, many other things mentioned..."

Unfortunately, he did not mention what time Daft Punk goes on.

KB, you are a moron. Dave Hill wasn't misogynistic at all. Quite the opposite actually. You're just too stupid to get it. Dave Hill rules.

Ya, KB, you stupid woman.

hey nyc taper - at least four songs from that thread were included in the set - last day of jimi hendrix's life, going to scotland, song for an old friend, alibi, and maybe one or two more.

Posted by Anonymous | May 19, 2008 11:56 AM

"Going to Scotland" was not on the written list.
"Jimi Hendrix" is the only song in that topic that made it onto the list (that's the "1" I was talking about), but apparently I missed "Alibi" and "Song for a Friend". So its 3. 3 of the 16.

Who the fuck cares where they came from, it was an incredible show and an incredible setlist.

Also, Kyle Dean Reinford, your shots came out so great. I was standing behind you kicking myself all night for not bringing my camera.
