The SONIC YOUTH Starbucks tracklist (curated by Radiohead, David Cross, Beck, Eddie Vedder, Flaming Lips...)

Sonic Youth vs STarbucks

Sonic Youth has finalized the track list for its compilation "Hits Are for Squares," due June 10 exclusively in Starbucks stores in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle, Boston, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., as well as online.

In addition to the exclusive Sonic Youth track "Slow Revolution," the limited-edition CD features Sonic Youth songs, handpicked by Radiohead, Chloe Sevigny, Dave Eggers, Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, Beck, Flea, David Cross and other enthusiasts. Participants have also written about their selections for the liner notes... [Billboard]

Obviously this association with Starbucks is going to piss some people off, but Thurston doesn't care. Check out the tracklist below...

Flea had the best pick.

Posted by Anonymous | May 21, 2008 9:20 PM

hey, i know those songs.

Posted by cornslaw | May 21, 2008 9:23 PM

flaming lips had the best pick.

Posted by Anonymous | May 21, 2008 10:42 PM

right, flaming lips had the best pick -- but only in the sense of picking the best song of the bunch.

mike watt had the best pick in the sense of picking the best *non-obvious* song.

and although no one gives a shit nor ought to, here my SY Top 5:

schizophrenia
xpressway
tunic
diamond sea
cotton crown

This could very well be the best selling album of their career, and at this point, I think they deserve it!

Posted by bullybu | May 22, 2008 12:43 AM

i give a shit 11:39!
i give a shit

it's funny to imagine actual "Squares" at Starbucks buying this album.

Posted by Anonymous | May 22, 2008 5:10 AM

TUFF GNARL

Posted by Anonymous | May 22, 2008 6:14 AM

Geffen and Starbucks are the same thing? That sounds like the type of simplified justification that comes from the far right wing in this country. If they want to sell more records they should stop writing self-indulgent, pretentious torture music.

Posted by Anonymous | May 22, 2008 7:46 AM

7:46 - Please stop stuffing cucumbers up your ass, God is watching.

Sad twat.

Posted by Anonymous | May 22, 2008 8:05 AM

My mom will probably buy this, then call me to ask if I've heard of them. I'm not kidding.

Posted by feedbacker | May 22, 2008 8:31 AM

i would've gone for titanium expose.

mary-christ by david cross is a cool pick. that song is triple weird. certainly not a sonic "hit."

how about chloe's unending credibility even though she does nothing to warrant it?

Posted by mildred pierce | May 22, 2008 8:41 AM

brother james!
world looks red is a good one.

Posted by Anonymous | May 22, 2008 8:41 AM

Starbucks hey, didn't see this coming. so it's gonna be sitting there on the counter next to Simon And Garfunkel and Joni Mitchell-that's going to be an interesting ride home on the car cd player!

Posted by Chalky | May 22, 2008 9:07 AM

Well if Chloe Sevigny selected a song, then I just have to absolutely buy this compilation, because mediocre actresses have alot of musical clout...Starbucks coffee sucks, so I'll happily avoid this audio-mess.

Posted by Anonymous | May 22, 2008 9:49 AM

Best picks were Beck and Mike D because let's face it, DIRTY was the best album!

Posted by Anonymous | May 22, 2008 9:52 AM

I would have included Trilogy, or at very least Eliminator Jr. on there. Every time I think of them doing that song at McCarren pool last year I get chills going down my spine.

Posted by Anonymous | May 22, 2008 10:08 AM

shoot me, i still adore the obvious "teenage riot." if an alien (or someone from long island) asked me to play them a song that would explain to them the whole indie rock thing, i would pick that one. (or maybe pavement's "silence kit.")

i knew it wouldn't be included in this comp (or any comp), but "winner's blues" is a tiny gem of a song that deserves a shout out...

Posted by Anonymous | May 22, 2008 10:10 AM

I'll take a vente latte, this crappy comp, and some cultural hegemony. Thank you.

Posted by Anonymous | May 22, 2008 10:37 AM

starbucks is officially legit. they got indie street cred now! i guess i can finally start chillin there with my hipster homies. fo realz.

Posted by sam champion | May 22, 2008 10:47 AM

The first three songs are a rough start--as "pop" songs they're ones that nonfans might get into but not Sonic Youth classics in my book--it's smooth sailing. A very nice mix of tunes. Very glad to see "Disappearer" on there.

Posted by Regular reader | May 22, 2008 10:47 AM

I'm just hoping they play SY videos on the flat screens on their walls so I can watch them while i'm in line waiting and waiting for my state approved stimulants..

Posted by jim | May 22, 2008 10:57 AM

I like Catherine Keener's choice if only because I'd like to put my Bull in her Heather.

Posted by Anonymous | May 22, 2008 10:59 AM

A pretty good selection all in all, me thinks. Good Goo tracks. Would have been nice to see more Nurse tracks, though. Unmade Bed, muthafukahzzz!

Dirty Boots!

Posted by Sha-na-na-nonymous | May 22, 2008 12:03 PM

Mildred Pierce!

(fr. "Goo")

Posted by drewo | May 22, 2008 12:18 PM

i can just imagine the phone call where a representative from starbucks called up radiohead and said "hey, what sonic youth song would you like to pick for this compilation?". i'm shocked thom, jonny and co. didn't just laugh in their faces and tell them to put 'my friend goo' on it.

Posted by Anonymous | May 22, 2008 12:26 PM

"Tunic" is the only Sonic Youth song that's worth a shit. Oh, and Catherine Keener is the aesthetic equivalent of fart cancer. Gah.

Posted by Crosseyed Sniper | May 22, 2008 12:51 PM

Big ups to Titanium & Schizo. Plus all the underrated Washing Machine.

1-2-1-2-1-2 titty!

Posted by Tito | May 22, 2008 1:00 PM

I would have picked Kissability or maybe Stereo Sanctity, but otherwise a very decent list.

Man, that Portia De Rossi chick is full of surprises isn't she?

providence

Posted by moldymind | May 22, 2008 1:52 PM

I can't believe no one has actually stepped up to defend Chloe Sevigny's cred on this. Her first break was starring in SY's "Sugar Kane" video and modeling for X-girl for chrissakes.

Posted by Anonymous | May 22, 2008 1:53 PM

that's a great photoshop image

Posted by jeffé | May 22, 2008 2:04 PM

people, can the hate. a sonic youth comp is still sonic youth music. that joy division best of that just came out was unnecessary, but it still contains great music. ditto here.

starbucks is anti-union

http://www.starbucksunion.org/

Posted by lori | May 22, 2008 2:32 PM

brlliant graphic, BV! no "Cotton Crown" is wacky, but it's even wackier that there's no Lee songs, "Rain King," "Hoarfrost," "Karen Koltrane" or "Eric's Trip." Everybody knows Lee songs are the best.

Posted by Anonymous | May 22, 2008 2:38 PM

Hey 1:53, you have way too much time on your hands if you're spending time defending Chloe Sevigny. Jesus who cares about her or Thurston Moore for that matter? This band has always been wildly over-rated, seriously. Mildred Pierce however, is a good song. That much I'll admit.

Posted by Anonymous | May 22, 2008 3:40 PM

Who says unions are automatically a good thing? Whole Foods doesn't have union workers either--and they probably don't need them!

Posted by Regular reader | May 22, 2008 4:15 PM

oh, and Cross the Breeze!

Posted by Sha-na-na-nonymous | May 22, 2008 4:31 PM

"Who says unions are automatically a good thing?"

no one says it's automatically good, dumbfuck. it's just good in the vast majority of cases. certainly would be good in starbucks's case.

Posted by Anonymous | May 22, 2008 4:48 PM

why does chloe have a say? because she fucks/ed vincent gallo? and i hate the ads i see with her and some asian guy promoting a shirt. i really wanted her to die in american psycho...wait did she die? no, i don't think so.

Posted by Anonymous | May 22, 2008 5:57 PM

chloe savigny would have to work very hard to offset the positive points she got for Trees Lounge.

Posted by Anonymous | May 22, 2008 8:01 PM

i'd "offset" some of her "positive points"

Posted by Anonymous | May 23, 2008 10:06 AM

say what you will about her movie career, chloe sevigny essentially became famous for being cool. she's like the kyra sedgwick of the 90s, or do i mean edie sedgwick???

Posted by Anonymous | May 23, 2008 10:29 AM

memory disease across united states

Posted by Anonymous | May 23, 2008 10:54 AM

"famous for being cool"! lol, thanks.

Posted by Anonymous | May 23, 2008 11:02 AM

hey 1102-

this is anon1029. i have nothing better to do at work today than sit here and read this post. if i sound ridiculous, i'd like to know why.

so why scoff at "famous for being cool"? or did you not have a reason...

Posted by Anonymous | May 23, 2008 11:17 AM

oh hi 11:17, im 11:02 had to do some work but now im back. Im the same guy who lol'd at dj's being called "opening bands", i just like to lol a lot. and i dont let the door hit me on the ass on the way out, either.

Posted by Anonymous | May 23, 2008 11:54 AM

"brlliant graphic, BV!"

Is that a doctored photo? I heard a DJ on Sirius say that there are Starbucks aprons like this. Maybe he or she based that statement only on this photo, though.

Posted by Anonymous | May 24, 2008 7:33 PM

Yeah, that's doctored. It's the kid on the right from the album cover.

Ca.
Plane.
Pour.
Moi.

Good call on the Lee shaft, Anonymous | May 22, 2008 2:38 PM. Give me some "Mote" or his spoken word thing on 'Washing Machine.' Or "Wish Fulfillment."

Posted by Tito | May 27, 2008 2:39 PM

I read this cool interview with Portia de Rossi for Blender magazine, that was done in 2005. She impressed me with her choices for fav music, and SY was right at the top of the list. Check out the interview: http://www.blender.com/guide/articles.aspx?id=1827

Posted by Lauren | June 11, 2008 10:25 PM

I love how much we all sadly think we like sonic youth for our own special reasons, and therefor act like pretensious hoes

Posted by To bruise. | August 27, 2008 12:49 AM

Lauren....

Who knew? Dinosaur Jr. AND Sebadoh.... very impressive indeed.
