The Swell SEason @ Radio City Music Hall

The Swell Season (Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova performing songs from the motion picture Once) played a triumphant, sold-out, and emotional (though at times a bit 'adult contemporary') two hour show at Radio City Music Hall in NYC last night (May 19, 2008). A setlist will surface soon enough and that will help summarize things better than I can do right now, but... there was a lot of storytelling, a shout-out to Pianos where they played two years ago, two Van Morrison songs, Marketa's singing sister from the Czech Republic, an opener from Ireland who later came on stage with the Swell Season, a violinist who played one of his own songs, and at least two standing ovations. There was not any Kraftwerk or Pixies.

The Swell Season's next NYC show will be at Rumsey Playfield in Central Park (Summerstage) on September 17, 2008. Tickets go on sale Thursday.

I thought they went Tonic > Blender/Gramercy > Beacon > RCMH.

It wasn't billed as Swell Season, but it was both of them. Just found this:

Updated the post with that link too.

Frames played Webster within the last year too!

Last nights show was amazing. The energy was great and it passed from them through the crowd. It was just a great night. I can't wait to see them again in September.

Really solid show, definitely enjoyed it.

One thing unrelated to the band but related to the venue......My Morning Jacket is absolutely going to blow the roof off that place in a month.

WHAT A FANTASTIC SHOW!

Beautiful beautiful show in the perfect venue.
I can't wait for Central Park in Sept.
The VM covers were amazing, and Glen was often hilarious in his storytelling.

Posted by bluedahlia | May 20, 2008 8:56 AM

I still would rather see The Frames.

Did they do Cactus?

Milking. it. to. death.

Posted by Anonymous | May 20, 2008 9:15 AM

"Milking. it. to. death."

Broadway plays run 7 times a week. They can't play 4 NYC shows in different venues in a year?

Posted by Anonymous | May 20, 2008 9:16 AM

"Milking. it. to. death."

Sounds like someone is jealous.

Posted by Anonymous | May 20, 2008 9:17 AM

Allman Brothers Milk it to death...not these guys. 14-21 shows a year at the Beacon alone!

I think it went:

pianos >tonic & southpaw > blender/gramercy > beacon > rcmh

Posted by Anonymous | May 20, 2008 10:03 AM

rcmh > hollywood bowl > msg > live 8

Posted by Anonymous | May 20, 2008 10:09 AM

This was such an amazing show....great setlist and loved how genuinely excited they were to be playing there!

Posted by Anon | May 20, 2008 10:27 AM

I love that Glen did the first tune unamplified. What an incredible performance last night.

For all you assholes who are saying you're over them, that they're milking it, etc, FUCK OFF! These guys are a real honest bunch, salt of the earth, organic success story. They deserve all the acclaim, and I think they're handling it like true professionals. They couldn't have been more proud or elated to be there last night. Stay in your holes listening to Team Robespierre or Fuck Buttons or whatever crap you fancy, and shut the hell up with your inane drivel.

Superb show. Glen even thanked us for spending our hard earned money on tickets to see them which was worth every cent I paid!

Anyone have a setlist?

Posted by Giggity | May 20, 2008 10:57 AM

did Glen do Banana Man again?

Posted by Anonymous | May 20, 2008 11:14 AM

how corny.

Posted by Anonymous | May 20, 2008 11:14 AM

the dude played Astral Weeks by Van Morrison! amazing!

Posted by Anonymous | May 20, 2008 11:19 AM

"Milking it?" Hipsters are so annoying.

Posted by Anonymous | May 20, 2008 11:29 AM

life-affirming show. so great to see such talented, humble people do so well.

Posted by Anonymous | May 20, 2008 11:38 AM

"Hipsters are so annoying."

Why do you have to stereotype?

"Milking it" is probably just a bitter musician who wishes they had the chance to milk it.

Posted by Anonymous | May 20, 2008 11:39 AM

What were the two Van Morrison songs played last night?

Posted by Anonymous | May 20, 2008 12:06 PM

"Astral Weeks" and "Into the Mystic".

What time did Daft Punk go on?

Posted by Anonymous | May 20, 2008 1:30 PM

musicians like these guys, josh ritter, the felice brothers...are nothing short of refreshing. honest, talented, enthusiastic and sincere.

4 standing ovations, all deserved.

maxwells > tonic > southpaw > pianos > blender/gramercy > beacon > rcmh

Could'nt have gone to a more well deserved talented bunch of musicians. They have been touring consistently(The Frames) for the better part of the last 7 years and are a peoples band. The people who love them will always be there when they return, where ever that may be!
Rock ON!!!

Went last night - enjoyed it as much for the "I-can't-believe-we-sold-out-RCMH" vibe as for the music. Either Glen is really, truly blown away and humbled at what's happened for him over the past two years, or he's the greatest bullshit artist in the history of popular music.

IM bankers and lawyers can feel so alternative when they go to shows like this.

Thanks so much for the setlist. That was a superb show. I just wish Glen had told about half as many of his rambling, mixed-metaphor stories and trusted the songs to explain themselves. Only once or twice did the story actually augment the song, rather than distract from it. He's such a clean, clear songwriter -- he needs to relax and believe the audience will get it without him talking forever about lions and ice and brain and rocks or whatever it was.

Whoever was concerned about the sound here, shouldn't have been. It was spectacular. We were way in the back of the orchestra and when everyone finally realized he was playing the first song unmiked on purpose, the place went dead silent and you could hear him fine. A brilliant move to open a brilliant show.

Along with Carnegie Hall & Averie Fisher Hall, RCMH has some of the best acoustics around. Whomever was concerned about that is misinformed.

To whoever said it wasn't billed as the Swell Season up top:

My ticket said "The Swell Season" on it, as did the marquee out front.

In other words, I'm not sure what you're talking about.

Great show, though!

Posted by Gwin | May 20, 2008 5:54 PM

They played Arlene's grocery and Sin-é long before any of tbose places.

Posted by joe | May 20, 2008 7:51 PM

I loved the stories as much as the songs. I didn't think there was too much talk at all. If I wanted just the songs, I would've just listened to the cd. It was a great show.

The talk made it more personable, made them seem more like friends instead of just performers.

Radio City is a landmark and holds 6000+. I appreciated that they seemed genuinely humble and in awe as much as most of the audience.

Glenn, Mar and the Frames are the genuine thing. No bullshit

"I just wish Glen had told about half as many of his rambling, mixed-metaphor stories and trusted the songs to explain themselves."

Have you ever seen the Frames? Glen always talked a lot.

In terms of venues, they also played at Mercury Lounge and the South Street Seaport. The first time I saw them was in a bar with less than 100 people in Boston back in '99-'00. One of my favorite shows ever.

The Frames and Glen solo also played The Living Room countless times, etc. But the Maxwells - RCMH progression was for Swell Season. This thread is about Swell Season, right?

It was not advertised as free you stupid fuck.
