Teenagers w/ guests from the audience
Teenagers & Team Robespierre @ Maxwells

The Teenagers (from France) and Team Robespierre (from Brooklyn) finished their tour together at Maxwell's (from Hoboken) on Saturday (May 10, 2008). Earlier in the month they played a show in Illinois....

Team Robespierre's secret to mayhem isn't a secret at all. Within moments of starting their first number, off from the stage jumped the band's lead singer, where he pranced around wailing as the microphone chord got tangled in amp wires (by the way, the term "lead singer" is used very loosely here: With Team Robespierre, the vocals are less singing and more non-metal shouting, and the "lead" part might be completely wrong, as all the members except for the drummer spent a considerable amount of time with their mouths on a mic). A quarter way into the set, three-fifths of the band was down with the audience. The keyboardist even took part, using the edge of the stage as his keyboard stand. I imagine this is a technique they use to recreate their natural habitat -- the illegal living-room venues in Brooklyn where the line between performer and audience is so porous and invisible it might as well not exist, where Team Robespierre is mildly renowned for turning run-down lofts and arty kitchens all sweaty and awesome. [North by Northwestern]
Team Robespierre have two Brooklyn shows coming up and one actually is, sort of, in a kitchen. Those tour dates, and more pictures from the NJ show, below.....

I saw the show last Monday at Bowery. I have to say, Robespierre is maybe the worst band I've ever seen live in my entire life, I actually left the room and went to the bar room after a few songs because I could not stand it anymore. Teenagers were fun, but their set is extremely short (50 minutes max?)

I saw the show at Cake Shop. I have to say, Teenagers is maybe the worst band I've ever seen live in my entire life, I actually would have left the room in order to get to the bar after a few songs because I could not stand it anymore. Teenagers suck doodoo, and their set is extremely long (50 minutes ouch!)

wow, i thought i was the only one at the show at bowery who left the room when team robespierre started. i lasted three songs...and didnt even stay to see the teenagers- it was that bad.

"I just got morning lumber from the gurl with the child-bearing hips."

Yup.

haha i took a friend to see robespierre at silent barn a while back and he also said they were the worst band he's ever seen in his life...i like them on some level...if you've ever taken the time to learn to play an instrument, they're not the band for you

yet another hipster-ish band in look and sound. wow, how unique...sigh. these boys and girls need to stop trying to be so aware of their look and start being more aware of how to actually play their instruments and operate like a band. then again, that seems to be the way many "bands" function these days.

>Puke

just sayin'

Posted by Anonymous | May 13, 2008 10:26 AM

Team Robespierre would be a lot more fun to see live if they played with some punk bands instead of opening for whatever the flavor of the week hipster band is.

10:28 word!

Posted by un:art:ig | May 13, 2008 10:53 AM

Or if they knew how to play music

Posted by Anonymous | May 13, 2008 11:24 AM

WHEN WILL PEOPLE STOP SUPPORTING THIS SHIT AND START DEMANDING DECENT MUSIC AND NOT A BUNCH OF FUCKING POSERS!

Posted by Anonymous | May 13, 2008 11:26 AM

does anybody else remember that team robespierre used to be a psuedo-industrial band? i dunno when it happened but they 'reinvented' themselves as an 80's eyeglasses-wearing, doofy sweater-sporting, matt&kim-meets-the-deathset. the move seems to be working for them but it doesn't do much for the assumption that they're playing for the sheer love of the music, more like latching onto the latest trend. we'll see what happens when happy bouncy poppunk goes out of style again...

i don't think TR is looking to be virtuosos. i think they're looking to party, personally. everyone just likes to be analytical when they really should just take the band at face value.

Posted by Anonymous | May 13, 2008 12:16 PM

of course, team robespierre is 'crazy' live. they have to compensate cause they suck so fuckin bad. stop playing guys. seriously, break up already.

Posted by Anonymous | May 13, 2008 12:22 PM

everyone knows the TR suck so bad, and i think even the band knows themselves that they are awful. but that doesn't make it any better. this is bad art, pure and simple. and just cause its 'fun' and 'stupid' doesn't mean that the general public has to be subjected to such nonsense. the meatmen were fun and stupid but unlike TR, they had 'some' agenda they were working with. TR know their own ridiculousness but please dudes, keep it to your bedroom 4 tracks and joke bands.

Posted by Anonymous | May 13, 2008 12:46 PM

Team Robespierre is the shit! It's not there fault that your medicore psych rock band can't get a show anywhere.

Posted by Anonymous | May 13, 2008 3:18 PM

While the band may not be as 'serious' as some others I think they are certainly not a joke band.

Posted by Anonymous | May 13, 2008 3:22 PM

Not a joke band. Just a horrible one.

Posted by Anonymous | May 13, 2008 3:57 PM

i didn't know there was a woman in the teenagers? i' glad she's okay with the respectful lyrics in all of their songs.

Am I the only person who thinks a great set length for any band is 20 minutes?

New rule: When people feel the need to trash a band they don't like, they need to list a dozen that they do. I have a theory....

Posted by Anonymous | May 13, 2008 4:38 PM

i love team robespierre. its true they used to be harder maybe even industrial but if i remember right the band now has 3 members that wern't in it then and a new singer? maybe thats why they sound different. go listen to OF MONTREAL haters.

Posted by Anonymous | May 13, 2008 4:58 PM

if these guys suck so bad then why are there shows always so packed? and why do i see so many kids wearing TR t shirts?

p.s. long live todd p!

if the jonas brothers suck so bad then why are there shows always so packed? and why do i see so many kids wearing JB t shirts?

Posted by Anonymous | May 14, 2008 2:52 AM

i dont think todd p has anything to do with TR besides booking him because chumps who dont know better show up to their shows. in fact, i would put money down that todd p hates this band but swallows it in order to give kids something they supposedly "like". noble, perhaps. but doesn't take away from the fact that TR are perhaps the WORST BAND IN BROOKLYN right now.

Posted by Anonymous | May 14, 2008 11:29 AM

the worst milemarker rip off band i have ever witnessed. and even milemarker werent that great. they think they're on the MRP/Neon Hunk tip when all theyre churning out is pure garbage.

Posted by Anonymous | May 14, 2008 11:31 AM

hater alert...hater alert...I don't know how anyone could dislike this band after watching there music video. You would have to be a serious Karl Rove type motherfucker to bash on this. Turn that Yeasayer record up and relax dudes.

Posted by Anonymous | May 14, 2008 12:35 PM

wow, i wish i saw this earlier. The TEAM finally has made it, Brooklyn Vegan-ites are hating!!!

Remember people - EVERYONE hated on punk when it first came out. Sex Pistols, Black Flag, Minor Threat, X - all of them. Only the kids in the know realized it was something worth caring about.

The worst part are the ignorant assumptions that because they play punk, they're not good at their instruments (the same was also said back in the day).

And furthermore, who pays for a ticket and doesn't watch the two bands? This is why we need bands like Team Robespierre and promoters like Todd P - to ween out the elitist, guest list, no-dancing, fakes who go to be seen instead of hearing music.

I may be biased, but I ain't no fool.

Posted by always right | May 14, 2008 6:06 PM

Too bad all you get are elitist, guest list, no-dancing, fakes at any show TR is opening at since they've become the hot new band to watch.

I finally got to check out your website. When you told me your website was called brooklyn vegan I thought it was some kind of food website. Anyways, great pictures.
