I went to this a couple of years ago. The park that it is at is fucking killer. They know how to run a good festival over in Newport. Very interesting mixture of people.

Just noticed Avett Brothers not on your free show calendar
July 9 @ Rockefeller Park, River Terrace

I got tickets for Saturday. In my opinion, there's not much to see on Sunday. Just Levon Helm as far as I'm concerned. Not enough to go for the whole day.

Newport has got to be one of the most reputable festivals out there. I think it pretty much started the indie music festival along with Woodstock. I'd love to check this out once in my life. If you wanna check out more festivals I found this link from a company called the Musician's Atlas, they're pretty cool. Enjoy! http://www.musiciansatlas.com/newsletter/jun08/calendar06_08.html

the Newport festival will always be remembered as the place where dylan pluged in for the first time to a horrified crowd.
the festival is at ft adams which is a pennisula that juts out into the newport harbor. it only recently that indie bands have started playing the folk fest. it used to be mostly older established folk acts. its good to see younger bands bringing some new enrgey.
newport is a great new england town, lived there for 6 years. lots of pubs and great food. Staying with friends is pretty much a nessecity. Accomedations are very expensive and book up way in advance for the festivals. I don't know of any camping anywhere near the event.
if you cant get in, its surronded by water on three sides, so grab a tube and jump in the sea.

Jimmy Buffett is our parents Jack Johnson.

Jimmy Buffett is probably the most successful independent recording artists going. His annual tours rank among the highest grossing every year. Every single live performance is broadcast over his radio station, his catalog of songs is widely regarded, collaborated with a diverse pool of musicians, has given to numerous charities, had multiple titles on The New York Times Best Seller List. Most importantly, people enjoy his music & his live performances.
And what do you do? You post on a blog.
Doesn't quite compare.

^^The hoary old popularity=merit argument

7:27 -- Jimmy Buffet is a farce. Your argument is ridiculous. News flash, dumbshit -- mass opinion is quite often horribly wrong. Look who our elected officials are in this country. Look who's at the top of the billboard charts. Look what kind of movies and video games are top-grossers. Does mass popularity occasionally coincide with genuine artistic merit? Sure: Dylan, Bowie, Sinatra, Motown, Springsteen. But Jimmy Buffet? Jesus no. A silly clown with a tropic schtick with nothing but mouth-breathing yahoo appeal.

bv commentators are the voice of reason against the media elites / pr yes men. Jimmy Buffett is bland, so is Kenny G. Dont care how popular they are or how many records they sell, really dont care.

Hmmmm that lineup seems decent. Might have to go, I can almost gaurantee a James, Ward, Deschanel collaboration.
