« Amy Winehouse @ Glastonbury 2008 - she sings, fans go crazy (and get 'punched') (VIDEO) | the Hold Steady, Loved Ones, slip n slide, dodgeball & rain @ the 1st 2008 McCarren Pool Party, Brooklyn, NY - pics »

"Man do I love the Seaport shows that the wonderful River 2 River folks put on for us each Friday night during the summer! Is there anything better then get a 32oz. beer for $4.50, and sitting as the sun sets behind us watching some awesome bands? No, there's really very little that compares to it. The Pool Parties are close, but at the Seaport we're in twilight and get the river breeze so it's a bit cooler giving it the points to take the lead. Anyway, a few hours ago I was at said Seaport watching two awesome bands bring their A-games to a couple thousand people watching. Both King Khan & His Shrines and A Place to Bury Strangers were at top form this evening and if you missed for some reason (like to see Cold War Kids for the 342nd time) well then I feel sorry for you folks." what a dumb recap. the music at the seaport usually sounds like garbage (its not fair to complain about free shows, but that's the truth). To say they were in "top form" is that even saying anything about the band? also, CWK have played less in NYC over the past year than APTBS so don't feel sorry for us - they were certainly in "top form" as well.

spoken like a true spoiled rich kid!
Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2008 8:37 AM
yea...top form for APTBS just means that they stomped on all their pedals a whole bunch, like, in synchronized motions to the seizure inducing light show. i almost went just to watch ACTUAL strangers horrified reactions....but then I realized that this band is a pain.

i love how no one talked about black acid...they were great even if it wasnt the best sound. they sounded like icarus line meets spiritualized.

Don't quit your day job, Jay! I need the free drinks at Pianos! and it's only a matter of time till the city agrees that APTBS SUCKS!!! it's not debatable, sorry.
Posted by The Truth Ruth | June 30, 2008 8:49 AM
sound at seaport is good if you stand close to the stage.

32 oz drinks? where is this? it's more like 10 oz cup for $6. and what's with this "sitting as the sun sets" thing? Seaport shows are all about standing and overpriced brews. the bands are good. King Khan put on a great show. Black Acid were pretty dissappointing.

yes I would like to know where to get those 32 oz beers for $4.50, please.
Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2008 9:24 AM
I'm guessing most "this band sucks" comments are from the same person.
"it's not debateable, sorry" is my fave, though.
Hey baby ruth truth, at least you apologized, if back-handedly. How Clinton-esque, man. 21 going on 13, no?
jim, they were talking about BYOB. a couple quarts in a bag from a store downtown and yer good.
Listen, CHILDREN; it was a free show. If the sound was, let's say, Carnegie Hall good, you'd have to pay for it. spoiling, spoiling, spoiled...
and I dig that Pure Phase shirt, Jono.

I don't know what show I was at, but I paid $6 for a beer and heard a pretty good APTBS
Posted by Eduardo | June 30, 2008 9:27 AM
King Khan is going to take over the world. You heard it here first.
Posted by JWeir | June 30, 2008 9:39 AM
>>>and sitting as the sun sets behind us watching some awesome bands?
um. yes, behind you. waaayyyy behind you. those shows are on the east river and the sun sets on the west side. so, minus the entire island of manhattan behind you, yes, the sun is setting behind you. and behind all the buildings. so really, it's kinda not like the sun is setting just behind you. is it?

Did anyone go to the Warlocks/Black Angels show at Southpaw the day after APTBS? What an amazing two days of music.

APTBS were really friggin' good. Have any of you smack-talkers actually seen them play before? Standing back a little from the crowd, the sound was also very very good for an outside show, better than I've heard at any McCarren Park show...

Seriously, where are these $4.50 32 oz. beers? Give up the info BV, like you do for every advanced ticket sale...
...and I think people miss the point of Free NYC shows in general. Though I've seen some great bands at SSSeaport, I'm not sweatin' the sound quality or the band's performance (pay money and see them in an actual venue for that). I'm going there to listen to some good free music, catch up with friends and throw back some beers after work... Preferably the $4.50 32 oz. beers in the future, instead of the $6 ones Jim and I have been drinking. Anyway, 4th time seeing APTBS and they sounded good, sound wasn't loud in the beginning tho...
BV what's the 411?

32 oz beers are upstairs in the food court.
boo hoo.
Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2008 10:45 AM
Please do not reveal the secret of the 32oz. We don't need to make that place get any more crowded.

It wasn't as good as they were at MHoW a few months back, but I thought they were still decent. I tend to pay more attention to their lighting/projection guy, though. He's the real spectacle.
Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2008 11:24 AM
bull nuts.
Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2008 11:25 AM
I walked around the entire stage, close, far, left, right. Nowhere was the sound "pretty good" or even decent. It lest on the far left side you could hear the snare drum.
Bullshit.
Strangers were still good but in the end, I don't think bands like this translate well to outdoor shows.
Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2008 11:55 AM
i had a keg and i was sitting on the edge of the stage

APTBS were great it's just the sound there is not great. Not enough coverage for so much space. Still most people around me were very into it. Great songs.

32 oz beers at Jeremy's Alehouse for cheap!
Also, I saw APTBS and they SUCKED!!!!!! They are so unbelievably overrated.

Good job letting the cat out of the bag kid B. Douche
Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2008 1:47 PM
APTBS would have been better if they scaled down the noise and went with jangly guitars / peter hook bass lines. they'd sound more like new order, but there's no crime in that. (shocking pinks and cut//copy are better off for it.)

"Good job letting the cat out of the bag kid B. Douche"
you know i agree with you anonymous 1:47.
the best thing about NY is that nobody knows about it.
so, shhh...

Good luck with those free drinks at Pianos Truth Ruth. We'll find out who you are.

APTBS sucked.
Also, although I have seen great shows at the Seaport, anyone who says that the sound there is better than at McCarren Pool is full of shit.
Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2008 9:34 PM
The band was quite good, you were too into the $2.45 beers and your crackberry to notice what you were listening too.

APTBS SUCKS. Oliver is cute and all, but the dead-weight drummer and the old guy on the bass need to retire it and move it to Florida...
Posted by Matt | July 1, 2008 1:53 PM
I've been drinking those $4.50 beers since Animal Collective--that suburban mall on the East River is actually good for something! Now, which one of those many "restaurants" in food court has the special brew? Kids, put on your Sherlock Holmes hats and start deducing!!!

We don't do 'bad sound'. You can't blame a sound company for inadequete sound when they're not running their own equipment.
