this is what it looks like upstairs @ Santos' Party House....

Santos Party House

If anyone has something nice to say about a Black Kids live performance, speak up now. They could use some opinions like that to counteract the multitudes of "they suck"s I'm used to hearing. Actually, this one is not so bad:

The Black Kids' music isn't necessarily going to blow your mind, but what they lack in depth they make up for in hooks and fun. This is music to dance to, to forget about your age to, to throw cynicism out the window to. Sure, i could poke a million holes in their show/music if i wanted to, but what's the fun in that? I couldn't help but just give in and get sweaty. [Quarterlifeparty]
This one is pretty good too:
A little bit throwback pop, a little bit rock and a little bit soul, the Kids' dancey, sassy set served as a perfect warm-up for headliners Cut Copy. Despite the band's relative newness, the front rows at the Black Cat responded in kind: dancing, shouting and singing along for the duration of the Black Kids' set. It was a little surprising for a band that doesn't even have an album out, though definitely warranted. [DCist]
Their status of not having an album out will change on July 22nd when Partie Traumatic is released on Columbia Records. Three days later the band will play a NYC show at Santos' Party House. Cover art and all tour dates below....

wish i had something nice to say, but i really don't. one of the worst live acts i have ever seen, and one of the most arrogant as well.

still it's a great single.

I was at the Black Cat show. The lead singer was a litte pompous but they were actually better live than I expected them to be. His sister stole the show and was the sole reason I was bouncing up and down and dancing.

I thought their bowery show was a lot of fun. Lead singer is a little cocky, but it didn't bother me. The two girls are great!

I kinda agree. I was at the Bowery show, but I won't doubt them until the album drops. By the way, how old to get into Santos?

I too was @ the Bowery. The onstage banter was pretty weak and the front dude is lackluster at best. Killer bass hooks a la Peter Hook and the two chicks def steal the show.

Saw 'em in Boston. I thought they were really fun. Youngblood's onstage persona came off as tongue-in-cheek seriousness, not cockiness. The songs are silly, danceable and fun. Black Kids is just a fun little band that doesn't need to be over-analyzed, but alas, that's what people tend to do.

that "...teach your boyfriend how to dance..." song is pretty great. the rest is lackluster music, but that's what you usually get from most bands' albums anyway.

Jesus, this is terrible. It's like Robert Smith fucked one of The Go Go's.

Totally "Gap Rock."

Robert Smith circa when, and which Go Go?
('cause that's gonna make a big difference in whether I puke or get hot)

I don't consider myself to be a hater of this band, but I must say that they were unbelievably boring at Coachella.

I like the band, but the lead singer could shut the f*#@ up between songs if u ask me.

Halp! I need some type of mnemonic to help me keep all these band names straight:

Black Keys
Black Lips
Black Kids
Cool Kids
Cold War Kids

I used to think that any band that employed female back up singers was lame by default. It seemed to be quite a fashionable thing to do back in the mid 90’s, Electronic’s second album is an egregious example of this. I could never understand why a band would want to ruin their songs with session singers going all Maria Carey over top of it. Black Kids kind of have something like this going on in some of their songs with their two keyboard players singing backup. The thing is, it sounds so good. Maybe I should go back and listen to that Electronic record, or maybe Black Kids just know how to use the female backing vocal. It’s this kind of flying in the face of fashion that makes this band endearing to me.

You’ve probably heard about the hype surrounding the Black Kids. How last fall just before the CMJ Music Marathon, Pitchfork gave a very glowing review to their four song demo. A frenzy of music bloggers ensued and soon thereafter the backlash started. They played a couple shows at CMJ to less than glowing reviews and then things kind of quieted down. They have been quietly playing live and apparently getting much better if last night’s show is any indication. They’ve also recently completed recording an album with ex-Suede Guitarist Bernard Butler (deja vu) which sees the light of day 22 July (if not before then).

If the reviews from last fall’s CMJ are true, then I would say these guys have greatly improved. They were loose, looking totally comfortable with their next big thing status. The main thing I noticed about their sound was the bass lines that just jumped out and grabbed you. Maybe it was because I was standing directly in front of him, but this guy was pulling out funk riffs song after song, pillaging the back catalogs of Chic and Rockwell. It worked with most of the songs, only a few could have used a little less funk. The Black Kids sound is a curious amalgam of the disco era, tempered with an English pop sensibility that reminds me a bit of Ian Dury and Blockheads. Through in a bit of Terry Hall (Specials/Fun Boy Three/Colour Field), Prefab Sprout, or Bob Smith of the Cure, which comes across in the heartfelt vocals and guitar and you’ve got an idea of the uniqueness of these Jackonsville, Florida band.

Everyone went nuts for I’m Not Going to Teach Your Boyfriend how to Dance With You, but my favorite song from their set was Look at Me (When I Rock Wichoo) which is slated to show up on the album, it contained the infectious funk flavored bass line, a guitar freak-out and the female backing vocals that were kind done as a cheer and ended with and Go-Team-esque chant that turned me into a Black Kids believer.

I enjoy them quite a bit, their Bowery show was entertaining. The internet has made people way to cynical, everything has a sell by date now and an album that’s not even out yet is already considered passé.

I second that emotion 2:05.

Here's the best example of an actual live Black Kids show I've run across on the web. It's at there home club TSI, where they apparently got started. It's a pretty cool video.
