123 Party

Cops showed up twice at the show happening in Sunset Park on Friday night (June 13, 2008). Frankpollis was about to go on around 2am. That's when the cops showed up for the 2nd time. That's when the party ended and approximately 8 people (including the guy in the above picture) were taken to jail without explanation to others at the party. Adam Green did not get to play, but he and his band were there and ready to go on last. He also wasn't arrested. More details soon.

any indication of what attracted the cops there?

were they local cops or some kind of task force?

were there a ton of people out in the street?

Haha You deserve what you get for going to an Adam Green/Frankpollis show especially when there were so many other better and amazing shows that night

My guess is because the neighbors complained about the noise and because it was 2 am. The "park" in Sunset Park covers 3 streets and 2 avenues, which is about the size of Madison Sq. Park and a little bigger than Tompkins. Plus its on a hill so any loud sound made will carry outside the park. Also, the surrounding neighborhood is densely populated so even if the show was an all-acoustic show, the neighbors could hear it loud and clear. And again, it was 2 am - people do sleep, you know.

123 42nd street and 1st avenue couldn't be in a more secluded and remote area. Its surrounded by nothing but factories. the neighborhood of Sunset Park begins around 4th ave. During the arrest's no one was told there rights or why they were being arrested. Go on facebook to see live feeds of one of the arrests made.

a noise complaint wouldn't have gotten anyone arrested, there has to be some other charge.

maybe it was just trespassing? city parks are officially closed pretty early.

I thought this show was on 2nd ave by the water.

no one lives over there.

Posted by nick | June 15, 2008 2:16 PM

or maybe open-container, but that rarely gets you arrested

Posted by Anonymous | June 15, 2008 2:36 PM

I was actually at this party so...

The reason why people got arrested (I think) is because they were charging for drinks without a liquor license. I think the rest of it was marijuana posession and whatnot.
Also

The house was definately right near first ave and was the only residential place on the block so I doubt it was the neighbors.

Sucks that neither Frankpollis nor A.G. got to play. both great bands....

All the bands playing this seem pretty shit, but with that aside, law enforcement people SCOUR the internet for things of this nature and are usually itching to break them up. look at some of the things that have gone down at todd p shows.

the house is completely isolated. no noise complaints. it was a DEA task force that broke it up. It was basically a fucking raid.
Fucked up shit

Posted by Anonymous | June 15, 2008 4:14 PM

what was a better show? fucking vampire weekend? fuck that shit

Posted by Anonymous | June 15, 2008 4:18 PM

the cops scour the internet for this shit?
you think the pigs are up on BV looking to bust up some hipsters? cant blame them.
by the way im having a HUGE gathering with lots of drugs and alcohol(no license) way out in staten island, i sure hope the cops dont show up..

Posted by sam | June 15, 2008 8:09 PM

If it was a raid it wasn't much of one. I was on the top floor and the cops never showed up there. .

that's true! but downstairs on the 1st and 2nd foors it was getting pretty scary....

Sunset Park hasn't been gentrified yet so this is a temporary war zone until white women feel safe walking around at night. Cops still in these minority areas tend to still be a bit overzealous, and sometimes first wavers/pioneers tend to become 'collateral damage' in the early stages of a neighborhood turning. Don't worry guys this sort of thing will happen less and less over the next couple of years.

"All the bands playing this seem pretty shit, but with that aside, law enforcement people SCOUR the internet for things of this nature and are usually itching to break them up."

the hell they do.

the cops are not scouring the internet, at all.

NYPD busts parties because of complaints, tattletale tips, and occasionally because on officer on the ground sees a lot of people in front of a building suspiciously; and for those reasons alone. Anyone who has any experience with police at parties knows this to be true.

It's pretty easy to confirm this, the police simply are not breaking up tons and tons of parties that have no licenses or permits or anything. A few get fucked with, but usually it's because they have powerful enemies tattling or else the parties don;t have good crowd control; but most parties go on without any harassment.

And why not? Because the police don't look this shit up on the internet. Who knows why not, but it's good that they aren't wasting their time and fucking up our scene any more than they naturally do.

another couple of common causes of the police showing up are:

fights breaking out or people getting hurt and then calling the cops or ambulances to the party themselves, or else someone behaving badly and getting 86ed from the party goes and calls the police on the party out of revenge.

4:14 is a little misguided, there's no way this was a DEA task force, that's the Feds.

but he probably means it was one of the NYPD Vice squad task forces, either from the Brooklyn South command or else from the NYC central command at One Police Plaza, either has jurisdiction over Sunset Park.

Anyway, if 4:14 is right and it wasn't the local precinct cops, then knowing which Vice Squad command these guys were from would give you a lot of insight into who called them out. If anyone who got a summons is on here and can say what 3-digit "command code" the arresting officers filled in on the ticket, that would tell us.

The Vice Squad guys come out when someone tips them off about a place selling alcohol without a license, or allowing drug use, or selling sex. When they come out to a little rock band party, it's usually because a powerful competitor called up their commanding officer and tipped them off about something enforceable.

A reasonable guess in this case would be that they were tipped off by a big promotion company that recently shelled out a bunch of cash for an Adam Green performance. The concert business is ugly and vindictive, and people get pissed when their exclusive talents goes and plays an underground thing that got a lot of press coverage and might diminish their ticket sales... but all of that's just conjecture here.

Anybody got a ticket they can read the command code off of?

I played at this party.

my friend was charged with charging money at an illegitimate club. though this is bullshit. they were asking a "donation" of 10 dollars. you cannot be convicted for taking someones money if they willingly give it to you.

The cops were simply 15 good ole boys with jackets on, getting their rocks off by arresting kids.

Get the lawyer who got market hotel off.

Posted by Anonymous | June 16, 2008 4:08 PM

what happened at market hotel?

Posted by Anonymous | June 16, 2008 7:51 PM

i saw that guy with the wacky hat and ridiculous outfit get frisked on the roof. i figured the cops were profiling him, "this underage looking guy looks like a weird druggie. get him!"

it was like highschool but with college kids, drugs and designer shoes that were made to look stepped on.

the cops outside were either sitting in a van looking bored or chatting it up with the hot girls.

party!

"a big promotion company that recently shelled out a bunch of cash for an Adam Green performance"

Someone would pay good money for an Adam Green performance? AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

"I was thinking of becoming a cop for a little bit but then I went ahead and got my high school diploma instead".

Anyone can become a cop these days.Just fill out the form in any local newspaper/magazine and take the test. That is why there are soooo many cops everywhere you look.I bet it is like the Police Academy movie with all the geniuses signing up to get paid to be bullies.

IT WAS BECAUSE OF UNDERAGE DRINKING AND IT WASN'T A VENUE, IT WAS A HOUSE.
