Dan Deacon @ McCarren Pool, Brooklyn, NY - June 26, 2008 (thepiratehat)

Dan Deacon returned to McCarren Pool in Brooklyn last night - this time as the opener for Devo and Tom Tom Club (June 26, 2008).
The curfew is 10pm at McCarren, so Dan had to go on at 6:30 pm. That was 2.5 hours before Devo took the stage at their early-for-a-headliner start time of 9pm (yes, that also means Devo only played for an hour). It goes without saying that the majority of the people who went to the show last night missed Dan's set. As you can see from the picture though, a decent amount of people actually did make it on time too.
And now that it's over, it can be officially announced that Dan Deacon is in fact the secret guest at Citysol on Saturday. There was a slight change in set times though. Dan will be headlining aka playing AFTER Ecstatic Sunshine. Also, it actually was supposed to be DD AND Dirty Projectors on the bill until DP had to cancel (Dan was not their replacement). More info at Citysol's site (P.S. it is FREE).

Is it me, or does CitySol's lineup this year seem really boring and played out?

Anyone have DEVO's setlist?

"Ok everyone, make sure you make eye contact as you go through the Friend Tunnel. Next order of business in this corporate teambuilding event is the Trust Fall."

"Anyone have DEVO's setlist?"
Uhhhh from what I remember (not in any actual order)
That's Good
Going Under
Girl U Want
Whip It
Freedom of Choice
Secret Agent Man
Slap your Mammy
Smart Patrol/Mr. Dna
Gut Feeling
Block Head
Gates of Steel
Mongloid
Jocko Homo
Satisfaction
Uncontrollable Urge
There was also a clusterfuck at the end where it looked like they were going to come out again (perhaps to play beautiful world?) and the venue pulled the plug on them. The audience started getting angry so they let mothersbaugh come out dressed as Booji boy to say goodbye and throw bananas and twizzlers at the audience. He looked like he was pitching a fit and then someone from the venue came and ripped the mic out of his hand to many boos. It looked like things would get ugly so we split pretty quick after that.

Devo was really good. Greatest hits setlist, but it was terrific. Those old dudes are tight and into it. They ended with Gut Feeling / Slap Your Mammy before their stage soundguy put a piece of paper in front of them saying they were up against curfew and had to stop.
It ended awkwardly and abruptly. Kind of oddly unprofessional for such a corporate rock show, with such a high ticket price. It was pretty empty in there, far far from sold out. Live Nation kind of dropped the ball here.
Tom Tom Club looked like they were having a lot of fun. They covered "Take Me to the River" and lots of other songs.
I missed Dan, unfortunately.

Wuss! You should've stayed and participated in the melee, should one have begun.

Yeah, the post-show-nerd-riot was fantastic. We calculated the force it would take to tear down the lighting rig, given the various variables. After which, we contemplated what chemical reactions would be most volatile for starting fires.

What was even stranger was that I had pointed out to my girlfriend while they were setting up that the Tom Tom Club/Devo change-over was really long considering the curfew, and the fact that Devo's gear was set up and mic'ed before TTC went on.

Why did Live Nation charge $60 advance for these tickets? The place was at like a quarter to a third of capacity.
They apparently lowered the price to $20 day of, realizing their mistake, but wtf? This was a show in a public park by a band that is basically a national treasure, what were they thinking gouging so much for the tickets??
Charging so much priced this out of the range of a huge part of the population. Would have been a lot more fun for everyone if the space hadn't been so empty, and since it was on public property with a lot of cops and firemen on hand, this basically amounted to a private party for people with money, subsidized by the city.

It's such a shame the tickets were so high. Many friends of mine wanted to come, just too rich. Devo was awesome!!!
then again, a swarm of Dan Deacon fans may not have helped things much.

Yes Devo last night was a huge private party for rich people on the tax payer's dime.
The best part was when they gave us all conflict diamonds as a goodie bag gift on our way out.

1:04, you can make fun but the fact remains this show was too expensive and that's why there weren't enough people there.
when is the next chance people will have to see Devo play outdoors in New York? A lot of people wanted to come and didn't because they didn't have the scratch. that sucks, no?

"when is the next chance people will have to see Devo play outdoors in New York?"
2007 they did hammerstein, 06 they did central park.

I didnt know they lowered the price. If they announced it earlier maybe more people would have come. plus bad job on Devo's part if they didnt know curfew there is strict, that info should have been passed on to them. I mean if you remember sonic youth there 2 years ago, they practically pulled their plug during the last song ("shaking hell" because, gosh, it was 10 o'clock! very strict curfew there.

so once a year, which is not often. thanks for fucking up New York's one chance this year to see a legendary band.
Posted by Anonymous | June 27, 2008 1:34 PM
strict curfew enforcement is what happens when you invite a bunch of cops and firemen to hang out swinging their dicks around all night at your party.

Lucky me, my lovely girlfriend had won a pair of tickets to the show, so we had dinner beforehand and missed Dan Deacon. Oh well, he plays about 10 times a month anyway.
Tom Tom Club were pretty good, but a fairly short set.
Devo, I thought, was fucking amazing. But the ending was abrupt. During the encore, it seemed like they wanted to keep going, but from where I was standing, it looked like they had a bit of confusion on the stage before finally being coerced off. The announcer then very forcefully said something to the effect of "that's all, GOODNIGHT." Whoever's to blame for that, what a bunch of fucking tools.
The ticket price was crazy too. I'm a big fan of Devo, but for $60 each? In the summer (the time of free shows?) Fuck that. I wish it was $20 from the start so my friends could have came, but they feel likewise on this one -- $60 is just too much.
Bitching aside, it was still a great night.

they charge way too much for ice cream in that joint!
Posted by Anonymous | June 27, 2008 1:46 PM
no shit about the ice cream - $9 fucking dollars for a shake?????
that's more than the Mr Softie charges the toruists in Times Square.
Shameless, tacky, insulting, and in a public park. They should lose their sweetheart exclusive deal.

Got in for $25 outside the show off someone selling extras. If tickets were $20 I didn't see it advertized.
Posted by Anonymous | June 27, 2008 1:59 PM
Q "when is the next chance people will have to see Devo play outdoors in New York?"
A "2007 they did hammerstein, 06 they did central park."
Hammerstein is indoors, and Central Park was two years ago. Therefore, the above question is still valid....
Posted by Anonymous | June 27, 2008 2:08 PM
Also got in for $25 outside during the Tom Tom Club. The tickets being sold at the 'door' last night were $56 bucks.
I don't know where you got the info from that tickets were $20 day of show. They were $56 day of show at the venue.

"strict curfew enforcement is what happens when you invite a bunch of cops and firemen to hang out swinging their dicks around all night at your party."
No. Strict curfew enforcement is what happens when you build a bunch of luxury co-op buildings on all four sides of the park and pool and the new yuppie residents start to complain about noise.

whatever, if all those cops weren't there they could have snuck in an extra 15 minutes past 10.
Posted by Anonymous | June 27, 2008 2:18 PM
what time did Kanye go on?

best comment so far!! we are all DEVO but YOU my anon friend are truly D-E-V-O

Were the (Vivian) Girls there backing him up or was it simply a solo Deacon show?
Posted by iheartvg | June 27, 2008 2:31 PM
"if all those cops weren't there they could have snuck in an extra 15 minutes past 10..."
No they couldn't have. There are contracts that are signed based on the laws and rules and policy, and when you are dealing with corporate entities such as Live Nation then you are also dealing with Unions. If the show goes over when not allowed, fines would be incurred.
The cops there are not there to enforce the curfew. They are there to look out for problems with the young crowd and write tickets for the things that people get tickets for at Rock concerts: Disorderly conduct, drugs, etc. They are also there for public safety and to help out if someone is in need or in danger like they were for t the guy who got injured and had to be taken away in an ambulance. Did he scale the wall/fence?
The average beat cop in the venue is not there to enforce the promotors contract with the City. That kind of stuff is taken care of on a much different level. There are stage managers and officials with the venue and Live Nation and the band etc who are involved in all that contractual stuff regarding curfews, etc. The cops are there for the crowd control. If the cops there knew that there even was a curfew and that the band had to stop playing at a certain time, they certainly don't care. That's not the reason they are in the park/pool during a show
Posted by Anonymous | June 27, 2008 2:37 PM
i just wonder why the curfew at the pool is ten o'clock, but at prospect park bandshell it is 10:30, ano not so strict (i've seen bands there go 5 to 10 minutes over)
Posted by Anonymous | June 27, 2008 3:26 PM
As far as the price, it says a lot when the "guest list" line was longer than will call/paid pickup
Posted by ando | June 27, 2008 4:55 PM
of course live nation dropped the ball - it's live nation! what do you expect? best dan deacon shows are todd p ones, and the one at the whitney was also awesome!
