Don't confuse this post with coverage of the 2008 Bang on a Can Marathon. In no way are we trying to say Dan Deacon is more important than anyone else that played during the twelve hour concert. It's just that Leia didn't go to the rest of the show because she was out doing something else (probably having more fun that she would have had spending all night in the World Financial Center). She (and about 100 other people according to her estimations) showed up in time for the 4am free Dan Deacon performance, or more specifically, for:
Dan Deacon, Kevin Omeara and Jeremy Hyman performing Ultimate Reality Part 3 by Dan Deacon (with visuals by Jimmy Joe Roche)Dan and friends ended up only performing for about 20 minutes. It was a memorable 20 minutes though - to the overnight security guards anyway.....

does anyone know what Owen Pallett was talking about when he read from a piece of paper about "inter-dimensional conflict" and aliens and the like? I became a bit confused. I'm curious to know if he's a Scientologist now or something. maybe he read Dianetics.
Posted by 12 Polars | June 2, 2008 11:21 AM
it was a sci fi story.
btw- i would really love to hear about these "more fun things" Leia was doing before showing up at 4 am.
Posted by Anonymous | June 2, 2008 11:28 AM
guys, it was way more than 100. I would estimate at least 200 in that area in front of the stage. Basically it was packed almost solid with people.

btw- so percussion was pretty lame. that childrens choire was one of the best sets of the night though, every stop on the f train.

Thanks for nice note, Greg - I am glad you enjoyed the show - it is always a pleasure to see you at Bang on a Can because you go through the whole concert with such a big grin on your face! About the ability to do this kind of work in other places, I just wanted to mention that this past year we have started doing marathon concerts on tour. We are still working out the formula for how to make sure they are all great, with the right mix of music from the community, rockers, and outsiders. So far we have done them in Lincoln, Nebraska, Baton Rouge, SUNY Purchase, and in San Francisco, the latter being the one that came the closest to feeling like the one in New York, and we have several more coming this season. I think the biggest issue about whether or not they are successful is not so much the program but how the message about the program gets presented. It is true that we have oddballs who want to hear this stuff in New York but there are oddballs everywhere - I think the difference is that New York is our community so we know where all the oddballs are - in other places we have to depend on the venue to find them and they may not know. But I am confident that they are there. I want to follow up on Colin's comment, if I may. It is true that a lot of what we do takes some energy and spark from indie rock. I do think that the interesting thing is not what we are taking from them, but that there is a lot of strange music in indie rock that has no idea what classical music or experimental music is or does.

What you said was, I think the biggest issue about whether or not they are successful is not so much the program but how the message about the program gets presented. It is true that we have oddballs who want to hear this stuff in New York but there are oddballs everywhere - I think the difference is that New York is our community so we know where all the oddballs are - in other places we have to depend on the venue to find them and they may not know.
And i still don get it.

When it came time to record the album, I knew it wouldn’t make sense if it was just another album of electronics, MIDI, and voice. So much of what I had written was for real instruments, not taking the time to realize the parts live would have just been lazy. I was there! but I saw the whole show! maybe not all 12 hours but I tried. I was too tired and tranced out by all the other music to bother jumping around so I sat in under one of the palm trees with a hopeful composer lady I met that night. It was a total blast of sound, all the other music that went before was real chin scratching, quiet, heavy thinking type stuff. The group directly before Dan was this weird Amsterdam-y guitar noodly/distortion heavy group that was uber serious. Some guy kept screaming about rock and roll, not realizing the whole vibe of the night was contemporary classical (aka snooty). That photographer lady missed out on the other music. Bang on a Can is incredible and all you rawk types don't seem to respect. Ah well, BoaC is a bunch of diva snoots anyways.
