Do you want concerts in Bushwick Inlet Park?

"As you know, this is the last summer for concerts in McCarren Pool. If you want planning for concert space to be a part of the new Bushwick Inlet Park by the waterfront, then you NEED to represent. That means going to meetings and getting involved. Otherwise, have fun wondering why all the bands from our neighborhood are playing shows in Park Slope and Central Park. Or why Live Nation got to build some cool space and all the shows here cost $50. This space could be used for local theater (imagine if Automotive High could do their musicals there!), artist performances... "Bushwick Inslet Park could be the future home of JellyNYC's free Pool Parties. Details on tonight's community meeting below....

Friends of Bushwick Inlet Park meeting
Monday June 9
7 PM
Diamond Bar
43 Franklin St @ CalyerAs a community WE NEED to stay informed, push the City and encourage, monitor and assist the Parks Department in the creation of the 28 acre waterfront park zoned for and promised to Greenpoint and Williamsburg in the 2005 re-zoning.
Come to the first WORKING MEETING of the Friends of Bushwick Inlet Park - absolutely no experience necessary!
WE NEED to:
1) Learn the details of and monitor the plans and timetable for the Levine Parcel (N9/N10 streets), adjacent to the State Park where ground is set to break on a community playing field promised to be ready for soccer in Summer 2009 - plans for the field as well as a innovative "green" Parks Dept building are nearly set to go out to bid
- we need to get our committee up and running so that we have future input and influence at the planning stages!2) Learn and stay informed of the City''s efforts and plans for the relocation of Citi-Storage ... the big blue building on N. 11th St (with a thriving local industrial operation) smack in the middle of the proposed park.
3) Learn and stay informed of Parks Department''s plans for demolition, environmental testing, remediation and future as well as interim plans for 50 Kent Street
4) Keep informed of the status of the TGE power plant appeal ...
presumably doomed but limping alongWE NEED to form committees for these as well as numerous other issues concerning the park (ie relationship between State Park and BIP, ecological issues, need for and means of obtaining community input in planning BEFORE plans are finalized, status of Monitor Museum vis a vis BIP...
WE NEED to create a website in which we monitor the issues, stay informed and hold the City and Parks Department accountable for the creation of our Park.
WE NEED YOU to attend the meeting!
Please come!
Get involved - join the Friends of Bushwick Inlet Park Committee.

They really fucked up with that state park. You used to be able to go down to the river at night and look at the skyline, drink a forty... Now they keep it locked up after 8 or some shit, so I only get to experience the river from a couple hundred yards away through that fucking fence. Get rid of that fence and I'll work tirelessly for the cause.

Why not hold the "Pool Parties" at the new waterfront park at Kent and N.8th?
Think that the residents of the new high rise next door would complain about the sound?
Posted by Anonymous | June 9, 2008 6:02 PM
How do you get there?
Posted by Anonymous | June 9, 2008 6:18 PM
Screw the high-rise chumps.Because Richie Richburg
is mayor, they think they own the city. This is a lesson for all the dopes that voted for Money Mike:
Do not vote for a multi billionaire developer.

who is this "we" that article keeps referring to? i ask because i know for sure that a lot of the residents in that community as well as neighbors don't feel included into the scheme of things that are being proposed. when people refer to "we" it's nothing more than a self-serving move that continues to chip away at the character of the city.

Will there be concerts in the park in Coney Island this summer?Or is that park also being turned into a luxury waterfront for yuppies to rest their briefcases, on their way to their high rise condos.

getting rid of all the events in mccarren is probably one of the worst ideas bloomberg has ever made/will make.
Posted by Anonymous | June 9, 2008 7:58 PM
^ i second that. its damn shame this is the last summer for mccarren. that place is so solid. however, i'm not familiar at all with the bushwick joint but i would definitely put aside some time to help out. free things are the best things. free shows!

I don't go to Brooklyn often for shows. I am not a big fan of park concerts either. However I absolutely love the shows at McCarren Park. I go there every chance I get. The stage is exactly the right height. Even if you're in the back, you still have a decent view. Even though I am a five minute walk away from Rumsey Playfield, I rather change three trains to go to McCarren Park any day. Fuck Bloomberg.

all you stupid hipsters would get your asses kicked by the locals before and after the show, so yeah..that would be a great place for shitty bands like battles and deerhunter to play their crap music for you tools.

To whomever wrote this --
"all you stupid hipsters would get your asses kicked by the locals before and after the show, so yeah..that would be a great place for shitty bands like battles and deerhunter to play their crap music for you tools."
-- I don't understand this. Why are you even reading this website? Do you have nothing better to do than comment on websites that you hate?
Ugh, anyway. It's a shame that they are taking the concerts away from McCarren Park -- for the past few years they have been really fun. But, I can see the reasoning RE: making it back into a pool. Everyone -- hipsters, families, kids -- can use a pool, while the concerts are strictly for one portion of Williamsburg/Greenpoint's make-up. So I don't feel too angry about it. I wish they could find another space to have these, though -- the city is seriously dragging its ass on building the promised parkspace that was SUPPOSED to come along with the high-rises ... surprise, surprise.

didnt they say they would still hold events/concerts there even after it reverts to being a pool? or is that off the table?

Seems that with today's youth the two biggest political issues involve music venues (this story, the story about that loud place in park Slope). Don't kids today know that the economy is tanking, there is an unjust war in the middle east, genocide in Darfur, god knows what is happening in Burma . . . . etc. etc.
But yeah, use up all that political energy to develop a free indie music venue.

Hi, 7:52--the "we" is anyone who wants to become active in the community. Hope that helps.
And 10:51, I'm 43. You can want to have a concert space--for ballet, for kid's concerts, for high school shows, and for rock concerts--and also be concerned and active for the environment, the economy, and all sorts of issues. It's not a zero-sum equation.
Thanks for reposting this, Brooklyn Vegan.

9:09, the surveys that were done indicated that what the community wanted was a mixed-use space that could accomodate performance as well. In fact, performance space was the number one request on the surveys. However the decision was made to instead make the pool back into a pool with an adjacent community center, which is a totally great plan. Vague promises have been made since that a performance venue would then be incorporated into the plans for Bushwick Inlet Park, or elsehwere on the waterfront, but those promises haven't come to fruition yet.

yeah watch what happens with the pool space though. My guess is that they'll get rid of the concerts, closed down the place. Claim they don't have the money for the pool anymore, and then break ground on condos. Just you watch.
Closing down the shows by promising a pool is only a game to prevent people from being outraged and protest while the City has plans to backdoor the site into building giant buildings.
Just you watch

just like the switch the ity just made in COney Island. Promising everyone a world class amusement park and then switching gears to High rises and a shopping mall.
The City is full of shit. This will never be a pool just like they never had any intention of making a giant amusement park in Coney Island.
The mayor and The city are all lying greedy scum in bed with condo developers.
Brooklyn will lose a concert venue and a pool in the long run and rich yuppies will have one more place to call home.
Don't be fooled.

I love the comments posted here. Typical jaded hipsters and their comments about how universely useless everything is.
Stop complaining and put some effort into initiating change.
Posted by Anonymous | June 10, 2008 12:54 PM
there are no such thing as hipsters. what there are, however, are hate filled drivel freaks who get paid by the govt to spread smear and nonsense across the internet to make sure the youth of this country feel powerless and isolated. this weak filth can't create anything, so they just spend their time in their mommy's basement dropping hate on everyone. it has been documented in the corporate press the govt is doing this.
Posted by nygrump | June 10, 2008 4:17 PM
If the youth of this country weren't wasting so much damned time on the internet this government scheme wouldn't work.
Posted by Anonymous | June 10, 2008 4:28 PM
I love how jimmy the greek, aka 7:10 am, knows so much about hipsters, aka white people, and local geography to not realize that this place isn't actually in bushwick- like, from the from the image of waterfront.
and yes, get rid of the fucking gate that closes at/before sunset

could someone explain to me why Jelly NYC gets this hypothetical sweetheart deal?
I think it's been pretty well established that they're incompetent (see: 77 Drummers).

All these morons forget that it was the Bloomberg administration that began the programming of concerts in the pool to begin with.

I agree 100%
this is a joke! there will NEVER be a pool there.
they cemented it over decades ago, the underbelly is unusable! they would have to dig it all out
remove everything! They are not going to waste all that money on that... for people to have a pool to go to. when the same land could get them millions... as if that means anything to them anymore anyway.
Sooooooooooooooooo
when those condos start to go up...
the people of the neighborhood have to do one simple thing...
make the hood undesirable again
start burning the construction site, stealing cars, beating up people in hummers and mercedes
paint on everything! start loitering, make people feel uncomfortable etc...
and they will give up and abandoned it.
JUST THAT SIMPLE!!
seriously... it is...
like 10-20 people alone could manage this.
and you have hundreds of thousands..
so get organized now!
and then you can have shows in a pile of ruble that once was a shitty condo high rise.
im tired of this walt disney bullshit.
where do they get off? ruining nyc. go figure.
violence is Never the ans. but that is ALL
they understand. well no, money is all they care about and bizness figures...
but the only to hurt that is to make it that no one buys it. or make it worthless.
and there is no better way then what i mentioned above..
that is all have a nice day =]
