Although they began their career as "a group of art school, experimental, post punk rockers", the band's quick rise to stardom, polished good looks, and embrace of the teen press, almost guaranteed disfavour from music critics. During the 1980s, Duran Duran were considered the quintessential manufactured, throw-away pop group. However, according to the Sunday Herald, "To describe them, as some have, as the first boy band, misrepresents their appeal. Their weapons were never just their looks, but self-penned songs." As Moby said of the band in his website diary in 2003: "... they were cursed by what we can call the 'bee gees' curse, which is: 'write amazing songs, sell tons of records, and consequently incur the wrath or disinterest of the rock obsessed critical establishment'."

Several of the band's contemporaries including The Bangles, Elton John, Kylie Minogue and Paul Young, have named themselves fans of the band's stylish, uplifting pop. Le Bon described the group as "the band to dance to when the bomb drops". Successors like Barenaked Ladies, Beck, Jonathan Davis of Korn, The Bravery, Gwen Stefani and Pink have all cited Duran Duran as a key band in their formative years. The newest crop of performers to name Duran Duran as influences include Dido, Franz Ferdinand, Panic! at the Disco, Lostprophets (who took their name from the title of a Duran Duran bootleg tape), Goldfrapp and Brandon Flowers of The Killers, who said, "Nick Rhodes is an absolute hero of mine - their records still sound fresh, which is no mean feat as far as synths are concerned".

Nick Rhodes has directly lent his production techniques to the bands Kajagoogoo with the song, White Feathers and The Dandy Warhols, with Welcome to the Monkey House. The band's music has been used by several hip hop artists, most notably Notorious B.I.G., who sampled Duran Duran's 1986 single "Notorious". Numerous bands have covered their music on record and in concert. [Wikipedia]

Great photos Ryan!

As usual the drummer never gets his close up...

Posted by Anonymous | June 1, 2008 2:30 PM

some of them aged better than others.

Who is the Guitarist?

I thought that the original line-up was back together.

Posted by Anonymous | June 1, 2008 2:51 PM

Fuck Duran Duran; Nick Zinner played "Broken Boy Soldier" w/The Raconteurs last night!

"Who is the Guitarist?

Andy was back... then he wasn't.

andy came back for the album ASTRONAUT in 2001-2006 then he left as the band changed direction to more synth pop electro sound ...and andy is a rocker!!
the fill guitarist is dom brown ...ive seen him live he is`nt bad at all...he really kicks ass...
this show is really awsome with 3 different sets...electro set is really kool with all 4 on synths...very very depeche mode ...kinda sound...loved the show..in pheonix...dodge theatre...the new album is called RED CARPET MASSACRE...the original album WITH ANDY WAS reportage...kinda very political...indie rock sound...but ...its in the shelves...we all want REPORTAGE out!!

One of the best bands to see 'live'. "Red Carpet Massacre" is a great album. The tunes are designed to grow on you over time and stick with you. Radio needs to give them plenty of the much deserved airplay they've been lacking, critics need to be fair and unprejudiced when writing critiques of the band, and closet Duran fans need to admit they love the songs! A 3 act show is unheard of these days. Duran Duran are truly legendary!

haha. the sure have = the magic of plastic surgery.

That was ignorant.

Duran Duran are a kick ass band live!

Posted by Parker | June 1, 2008 11:59 PM

Legendary band for sure. was nick at that show? or is simon and john the only two origs?

Posted by Anonymous | June 2, 2008 12:42 AM

only gay people do plastic surgery and the idea that any of the men in duran duran look or are gay is a silly notion.

Who let the Duran Duran fans out?

Posted by regular BV reader | June 2, 2008 7:23 AM

This was actually a great live performance. 2 hours of pure fun. And 4 out of 5 of the original band members were there.

To Ryan's credit, the drummer was almost totally obscured by the height of the drumkit and the depth of the stage. He wasn't really visible until later in the show, by then Ryan wasn't able to shoot.

I saw 3 or 4 catfights at this thing. Older chicks + rain and umbrellas + Duran Duran + the pressure of the premiere weekend of the Sex and The City movie = a dangerous mix.

you know a band is in the hole when they wear outdated all black wanna be smashing pumpkins/the hives ware, when they never did originally.
I dig those 80s videos as much as the next guy, but these pictures made me sad for them. I'd prefer to have seen the go gos.

I saw the friday concert and would have seen saturday in a heartbeat but had to work. thank you so much for posting these pictures!!!!!

Don't be sad for D2 they don't need any pity. you either love it or you don't...

I had long ago given up on Duran Duran but this show made me a believer again (I'm happy my friend passed me a freebie ticket). Their set lasted more than two hours and they played what seemed like every single. Simon's voice sounded great throughout and his enthusiasm for the gig never let up. They even covered The Normal's "Warm Leatherette" during their Kraftwerk-inspired electro set -- RESPECT.

Seven and the Ragged Tiger!

Posted by Anonymous | June 2, 2008 2:17 PM

Duran Duran are among the most incredible performers to emerge from the 1980's. Unique, true musicians who write their own songs, they are far and away bigger and better than any produced boy band before or since. It's fine if you just don't like their music; I can understand and respect that. But if you just ignorantly bash their music just because, then you're ignorant and stupid. They've aged INCREDIBLY well... they look better than most twenty-year olds. So all you young guys than can't stand them, perhaps you should wait and see what YOU look like when you're approaching 50.

a friend had an extra ticket for friday's show, so i went. wasn't expecting much, but figured it would be pretty cool to see such a legendary band. they ended up performing an amazingly energetic 2-hour set, and i'm pretty sure they blew everyone's socks off. definitely had no idea how much fun this would be. whatever "it" is, they still have it.

I went to Friday nights concert and did the meet and greet with the band for the 1st time. They are nice, down to earth and have aged well! Close up I think they even look younger than I expected. The concert was so amazing my friend and I bought tix on the 31st for the 31st show and didn't mind being rained on one bit. It added to the whole ambience. It was pouring during the Reflex (reminiscent of the the video of water pouring down). It was so much fun.Duran Duran are truly great musicians full of energy and enthusiasm. Live concerts with them are a memorable experience. Pictures can't do them the credit they deserve. Loved the concerts!!! Also saw them in Vegas twice, Phoenix and the San Diego Jingle Ball. The Jingle Ball got me all excited to see the full tour shows! So worth my time after following them for 27 years.

THE BEST BAND IN THIS WORLD!!! GREAT PHOTOS!!!
I HOPE SEE YOU GUYS IN BRASIL

Posted by marco | June 4, 2008 3:33 PM

I saw them in Boston right before the NY shows. The synth set was very unique and original. However , I was shocked that the stadium was barely half filled compared to very full 2 years ago. Maybe it is the economy??

The show was awesome! My friend and I flew up from Virginia after winning tickets from DuranDuranMusic.com.
I would be ecstatic if they added a 2nd North American Summer tour!

Great pictures!
I was at this show and it was a blast. They're still handsome and they put on a fiery two hour show, and they know how to please a crowd. At this point they have so much material to play, you start to realize how many hits they've had. Worth seeing.
