Esbjorn Svensson, RIP

Swedish jazz pianist and composer Esbjorn Svensson, who helped break genre boundaries and attracted a young audience outside the traditional jazz scene, died in a scuba diving accident on Saturday, his manager said.Esbjorn Svensson was scheduled to play the new NYC venue (le) Poisson Rouge on June 21st.Burkhard Hopper, manager of the Esbjorn Svensson Trio (e.s.t.), said Svensson, 44, died on Saturday in Sweden's Stockholm archipelago. Completely awful: I had literally just discovered EST on a link from the Poisson Rouge MySpace page and was enjoying them yesterday. Tragic.

Just came across this by accident. So sad. EST was one of the great (mostly) undiscovered musical acts out there. Almost without fail, I would play "strange place for snow" and people would fall in love with it. Sigh.

i wrote that after seeing them, and meeting them in boston. they were the most down to earth musicians i have ever talked to, and esbjorn had such control over what he thought about the music industry. we talked for a long time about what music means to him, and he really inspired me as a young jazz musician. the way he talked about his son was just as moving, too.
