Gnarls Barkley, Battles and Janelle Monae played the 150th MySpace Secret Show at the Fillmore NY @ Irving Plaza last night (June 8, 2008). It was hot, sweaty, crowded and free. People waited on line for hours in the sweltering heat to get in. The line started forming around 2pm. Gnarls Barkley took the stage around 9:45, and their performance, outfits and all, was very similar to the show they recently played at Highline Ballroom. That is not a bad thing.
Catch Gnarls Barkley on Letterman tonight (June 9). Listen to them on NPR. Over the weekend they played the Roots Picnic in Philly. On Tuesday they'll be at the Apple Store (stripped down).
This singular performance, in support of the acclaimed new Gnarls album The Odd Couple, will begin promptly at 7:00 PM, and is first-come, first-in.More Irving pictures, the setlist, and tour dates below...."Gnarls wanted to give their fans a live show that's fundamentally different from anything they could get from an album," said a spokesperson for the band. "Recently, they've been experimenting with a stripped-down lineup, and the songs have sounded exquisite. They were planning to hit up the Apple Store anyway, so they thought, 'Why not play a few songs while we're there?' When they heard there was a half-moon on the 10th, they thought, 'Perfect.'"
This show will mark the premiere of Gnarls Barkley's sparse, core-lineup live show. Afterwards, Gnarls will take its stripped-down show to Europe for its June Residency Series in London and Paris, from June 12 - June 18.

They started cutting people off at 6ish... don't know what time those last people got in line but I got there at 3:30 and ended up in the front row. It was all pretty efficient, really. Thank god for that thing over the sidewalk.

I showed up at 5:30 & saw that most people had wristbands already, so I just left.

I was there around 2PM, there were about 70 people in front when I came. The wristbands were given at around 3:30-4PM, I guess. Also, a lot of schwag, like buttons, shirts, stickers, etc. But...in the end I made it to the front of the line? WHY? Because those 70-somewhat idiots actually listened to Fillmore's staff *GUYS, you got wristbands, now go. We can't you here for all this time, come back around 7.*
...Right. So those idiots LEFT, leaving the front to be bumrushed by myself and the rest of the people. In all honesty, who leaves their spot on line, especially when you came early and got the first spots?
That's just...ridiculous...but good for me and the rest of us. Fillmore was lacking an AC, but it was OK considering the show was absolutely spectacular. I met Bao, and he's fucking awesome. Everyone was drenched, the photographers, the fans, BATTLES...especially the drummer. It was definitely a hot and sweaty experience...but also a memorable one, thanks Gnarls Barkley...and MySpace.

I think the "idiots" are the ones who remained on line in the sweltering heat for a few extra unnecessary hours after getting a wristband that guarantees you admission.
Those "idiots" who left probably went somewhere with air conditioning & fluids before the start of the show. True they may have given up their spot in front of the stage, but at a place as small as Irving Plaza, who really cares?!
Sounded like a fun (albeit hot) show. Sorry I didn't get there in time. But I TOTES would have high-tailed it out of there once I got that wristband.

Anon 1:14PM, I can understand that, but I had someone hold my spot while I got 2 gallons of water and food. Everything was done quite well, also, there was shade at Irving Plaza. Plus, why stand in the front of the line if you're not going to be in front at the show?

cee-lo is a star, but the show was disappointing. the heat was a bit to blame, but so were the boring renditions of the tracks. check my concert review: http://musicblog.ugo.com/index.php/musicblog/more/gnarls_barkley_at_the_fillmore_at_irving_plaza_june_8_2008/

i had a sweet spot because i got in line at 1. its better to have friends there so you can go and get food and drinks and pee and stuff while still having a spot in line, thats what we did. i had the 13th wristband.

Wow 13th wristband thats great, you're special...

Sounds like everyone had a good time for the most part. I was never big on keeping fans standing out in long lines or waiting for hours to take the stage like the infamous axel rose does on a routine basis. Perhaps thats why his chinese democracy did so poorly, or was it that it simply lacked musical talent?
