there are a lot of coin slots in this post.

lots of... um, crack at the show there...
Posted by Anonymous | June 24, 2008 12:06 PM
why is everyone sitting on their asses at this show? was it that boring?
Posted by Anonymous | June 24, 2008 12:10 PM
doesn't look like many folks in attendance
Posted by Anonymous | June 24, 2008 12:13 PM
The pictures of the thin crowd and everyone sitting during the daytime were taken during the opening bands.
Shortly after Gogol went on, the sun set and the place filled up.
Posted by Yeah | June 24, 2008 12:13 PM
Excellent pics. I remember some of those people.
Posted by StacyG | June 24, 2008 12:13 PM
this band is awesome. how full was it?
Posted by Anonymous | June 24, 2008 12:14 PM
Great show, amazing energy all night. thanks for the pix!

I guess Gypsy Punks have no soul.
Posted by Anonymous | June 24, 2008 12:15 PM
looks like the mermaid parade
Posted by Anonymous | June 24, 2008 12:17 PM
the show was packed. looks like the vegan chose to put crack shots instead of crowd shots. all except for a couple are from early in the day. fantastic show and manhattan samba where really cool in the crowd and onstage.
Posted by Anonymous | June 24, 2008 12:21 PM
This band is a joke, and I cannot wait until the novelty wears off and no ones cares about them.
Posted by Anonymous | June 24, 2008 12:26 PM
"doesn't look like many folks in attendance"
same night as morning jacket
also these comments are contradictory..it looks like gogol played before sunset
Posted by Anonymous | June 24, 2008 12:28 PM
first of all, gogol bordello sucks. that band is a gimmicky piece of crap.
secondly, how is that event staff picture good? it isn't.
Posted by oksir | June 24, 2008 12:34 PM
I had fun dancing for two hours.
Posted by Anonymous | June 24, 2008 12:40 PM
Leia likes the ass crack to...
Posted by Anonymous | June 24, 2008 12:42 PM
Nope - I'm not having it. Any other band I could just about forgive, but Gogol Bordello are something perfect. 'Illumination' is as emotional a song about the immigrant experience as I can imagine. 'Dub - the frequencies of love' is as wonderfully experimental as just about anything nowadays, and 'Immigrant Punk' is as exciting as rock music gets. If you're prepared to dismiss something as 'gimmicky' or 'novelty' because someone sings in their original genuine accent and uses traditional instruments, you are not only a close-minded fool, you are culturally impoverished because of it.
The excitement of punk music mixed with the emotional melodies of gypsy tradition. That is perfect....

don't act like you're a gypsy when you aren't. and if you're going to tell me he is, shut it, because I can guarantee half that band aren't. and you may think lyrically they're good songs, but quite frankly they all sound the same. nothing about gogol bordello is innovative. they gave themselves a fun title ("gypsy punk") and that's about it. No one is going to remember this band in 10 years.
Posted by oksir | June 24, 2008 12:53 PM
looks like you have to either (a) have lots of tatts (b) show serious ass crack, or (c) be around 15 to attend.
fun!
Posted by Anonymous | June 24, 2008 12:55 PM
Drum machines totally have soul. That guy's a douche hippy anyway.
Posted by james | June 24, 2008 1:02 PM
hey, you want soul? well then. pour yourself a nice cup o' vivian deacon & the girls and that'll get you all the soul you need, my brah.
Posted by Anonymous | June 24, 2008 1:05 PM
Hey, oksir, I never suggested I was a gypsy, or that they were, for that matter, so shut it yourself (particularly with your gypsy sounding name(joke)).. 'All sound the same' - all the best music takes some time to enjoy the new sounds, and they often seem the same to start off with. I hated My Bloody Valentine, Public Enemy and Sonic Youth initially for those very reasons, and I love them now.
In ten years time, there will be a whole bunch of new bands who have eastern melodies hailing Gogol and System as their primary influences (if global warming hasn't done for us all by then).
Posted by Danothebaldyheid | June 24, 2008 1:12 PM
gogol bordello = fun, crazy, rock-out shit.
system of a down = shit.
but really, at least the band isn't comprised of mouth-breathing heroin-gaze knob-twiddlers and can play its instruments.
Posted by Anonymous | June 24, 2008 1:27 PM
wow - let's take pictures of the same boring hipsters over and over! except for some people with ass cracks! yeah!
Posted by Anonymous | June 24, 2008 1:28 PM
Fuck Santos Playground!!!!!
Posted by Anonymous | June 24, 2008 1:31 PM
it was a really weak attendance I must say.
and the show wasn't all that
hence sitting.

"This band is a joke, and I cannot wait until the novelty wears off and no ones cares about them."
You could not be more wrong and i think anyone who happened to be there with an inkling of the same opinion left feeling completly rocked! If you made this statement about some watered down bullshit band like the shins or the national or something i'd agree but gogol bordello is very genuine.
And also, HALF THE BAND AREN'T GYPSY! THAT'S THE POINT! THEY'RE INTERNATIONAL!
The photos are mainly of hipsters butt cracks and not of the fun after the sunset! A lot of the hipsters near where i was had to flee cuz the dancing got too intence!
Posted by Adam | June 24, 2008 1:37 PM
hipster butt cracks? all i see are overweight kids that played guitar hero inside too long.
Posted by freddie mercury | June 24, 2008 3:06 PM
blurry photos make baby daft punk cry

I often read these comments b/c their is always some haters. Their are no more universal Beatles style bands that everyone loves. I know someone will write that Beatles are overrated. The truth is that everyone has their own taste. But, I went to this show and the energy is amazing and I go out at night looking for fun not some long standing legacy the band will leave in 10 years. And Gogol Bordello brought a great time. As for the crowd, that place is huge and this isn't some huge band like coldplay.
Posted by David | June 24, 2008 3:12 PM
Adam: And also, HALF THE BAND AREN'T GYPSY! THAT'S THE POINT! THEY'RE INTERNATIONAL!
They call themselves gypsy punks, not international punks.
Posted by Anonymous | June 24, 2008 3:16 PM
there's no gypsies or creoles in vermont.
dude's from burlington. many kind buds in the green mountains. everyone's having fun.
we dance.
Posted by SM | June 24, 2008 3:47 PM
concert was awesome, Gogol bordello is awesome, and the crowd was much larger than those pictures make it seem. Also, Gogol Bordello has existed longer, released more albums, created better music, and overall done much better for themselves than 90% of the bands that are discussed here on a daily basis. I'm convinced some of the people here don't like any kind of bands at all and only post their hate here to give themselves some kind of sick ego boost.

if i ever see someone on the street with those stripey neon "sunglasses" remind me to give them a swift kick to the nuts.
Posted by grrr | June 24, 2008 4:27 PM
According to his wikipedia entry, Eugene is of Romani(gypsy) descent. And his music is heavily influenced by eastern european music as well, not just gypsy music.
So the term "gypsy punk" does fit.

Drum Machines Have No Soul?
Ever heard of a little tune called "Sexual Healing"?
Posted by sammy | June 24, 2008 5:16 PM
yo this show was mad fun, tons of people were dancing, it was awesome
it looks like all the pictures of the crowd are from when the opening bands were playing, the show got a lot better when it got darker and all the pictures up here seem to be when it was still bright out
Posted by chris | June 24, 2008 8:00 PM
word thanks for the pictures! there's one of me and my two friends chillin which is awesome.
i don't care what anyone says, it was the best show of my life. gogol bordello is amazing.

what happened to all the Leia fans?
Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2008 12:40 AM
really, if people had fun, then what are you bitching about? let us enjoy what has been called a gimmic, and you sit and listen to celine dion, or whatever it is you like.
the show was the greatest one i've ever been to, hutz is a masterful artist, the entire bordello crew are some of the most talented people ever, and i can't wait until they come back around. i'll most certianly be there.

Can someone please explain State Radio for me!? God, one of the worst bands i've ever seen!! But Gogol Bordello more then made up for them.
They are one of the best live bands of this generation!

funny story about that "drum machines have no soul" sticker - he got it from the rock and roll hall of fame in cleveland - I know because when I was on tour we bought one for our van and it has the guy who made it's phone number on the sticker - so we called the guy from the road and he's a total lunatic - he's very very serious about drum machines having no soul and he wanted to meet up with us so that we could talk more about how electronics have ruined music
Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2008 9:00 AM
>what happened to all the Leia fans?
a cool name will only get you so far. she's gotta learn to FOCUS!
Posted by Anonymous | June 25, 2008 3:23 PM
gogol was fanstastic and so was manhattan samba. together they blew the roof off!. the show didn't really get started till nightime when all gogol fans showed up and then it was crowded. no knob twiddlers they all played and sang with live instruments. sounded like a freakin carnival.

Krack Kills!

i agree.. the preggers chick is hot.
gogol bordello is by far one of the best live shows i've ever had the pleasure of seeing, and i will most definitely be seeing them again. for those who can't appreciate the genuine raw talent in these folks and their love of making music, there is no hope for you anyway, so go lick a kitty.

The fact that so many BV commenters hate this band makes me love them even more. One of the few original acts in this shithole city.
Posted by Anonymous | July 25, 2008 7:24 PM
"im in one of these pics by far the best show of my life and i ve been to about 30"

I saw this band on jimmi Kimmel's show last night. This man waxes his mustache - Big flipp'in deal. I was doing that in art school in 84. He can't sings his way through a soaking wet piece of toliet tissue. This is totally gimmicky, non substantial, and soulless crap. I have worked with drummers and drum machines both, and until the day real drummers come with a volume knob attached somewhere to their thick skulls, I will use the drum machines thank you. Drum machines have no desire to consume too much beer and space off either.
This act though - Maybe it's because I am not a native New yorker or something, but they are in for a very short run. The talent gene has clearly been bred out of this guys lineage long long ago. It was like they released a busload of retards on the Jimmy Kimmel show last night. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Then when I listened to it - They need to just wither, dry up, and blow back to whatever youth hostel they got kicked out of.

Hey, the guy's making a living off of it, kudos to him.
These people that say this band was the best concert of their life, probably haven't been to many shows. Or maybe they feel the numerous amount of people in the group makes the music better -- a gospel-type feeling that makes them think they're closer to ultimate enlightenment. Who knows.
PS. crack kills
