Jamie Lidell @ Bowery Ballroom, NYC - June 9, 2008 (more by Jason Bergman)
Jamie Lidell

Those familiar with his earlier material may struggle to see how a leap into music so radio-friendly that Elton John is apparently a fan could possibly be described as an experimental move. The fact that Lidell stayed at Warp despite major-label courtship may avert some of the sell-out charges. Nonetheless, there seems little doubt that Jim will be a highly divisive record, repelling at least some old fans with as much force as it will attract new ones. If Jim is not a hit, Lidell risks losing his experimental fanbase without having a attracted a new one to replace it. Indeed, the knives are already out in some quarters: the new record has already been compared to Jamiroquai - and that is not intended as a compliment. [Guardian]
Jamie Lidell played his second of two NYC shows at Bowery Ballroom on Monday. Tuesday night he appeared on American TV....

That's an awfully cynical Guardian snippet right there.

I saw him on Monday at the Bowery and while it was a lot of fun and overall a worthwhile experience I had some qualms. Basically half of the album Jim is crap. He also was using autotune way too much, in fact he used it for "Figured Me Out," the best song on Jim, when he could have just sang the shit out of it regularly. Also, he only has two albums out, would it have killed him to play longer than an hour and 15 minutes? Some tracks that he didn't play that I would have loved to hear (especially with the band) were "Hurricane" from Jim, and "what's the Use?" and "What is it This Time?" from Multiply. I think those tracks would have sounded great with a full band.

Was anybody there? What does anyone else think? I am well aware that the vast majority of you don't care, so please try and spare me the snide hipster comments.

BLACK TOP SHOWER HEAD. AN EXERCISE, AN EXERCISE AND EXERCISE. LIKE A LEAF IN A PARK IN JAPAN. LIKE A LEAF IN A PARK IN JAPAN. THE GIRL WITH HER MOUTH WIDE OPEN CARES ABOUT THE SLOW WAY THE SUN BURNS. A BRILLIANT CORONA. DO YOU LIKE THE IMAGES? DO YOU LIKE COMING HOME, STOMACH FULL, FACE GRINNING? IT'S BEEN AN EASY NIGHT'S DAY AND I'M DRINKING FROM YOUR CUP THAT LOVES, AS YOU GENTLY SLIDE ON YOUR BLACK LEATHER GLOVES. HE SAYS IT WORKS SO IT MUST WORK. DOES IT WORK? I CARE MORE THAN YOU KNOW. MORE THAN YOU CARE TO KNOW.

I haven't heard Jim yet, but I love Multiply. I don't like what I'm hearing about Jim so far, though.

Going to catch the free show in Central Park...

Jamiroquai one of the greatest Funk groups of all time. Yeah, that's a real bad comparison. You people are idiots. Jamie's latest is way more soulful and in my opinion better than his previous.

I didn't know that Elvis Costello had gone all gay... would be great to see him with that guy from Maroon 5.

I loved super collider, but I was just watching this video and a friend walked by and I got really embarrassed. This music sounds like something you'd hear on a cruise.

Sunday he only did one improvised electronic number, where as on previous tours he'd alternate those with the more straight up vocal stuff. It would be too bad if he lost his IDM roots altogether.

The crowd there was pretty diverse, but way more 'normal' than it used to be.

This album is soulful and funky... like Jamiroquai.

He should have played "Green Light" - saw him on Monday and he killed it. That would have worked better I think than this one, esp. since no one really knows who this guy is.

pretty unremarkable.
