That was an ultimately tasteful "fuck you" to Noel. Oasis hasn't been relevant for a damn long time.

Also, who doesn't love seeing Jay-Z rocking a strat?

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2008 12:58 PM

That was the only good song he played!

Posted by NG | June 29, 2008 1:00 PM

haha

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2008 1:22 PM

Amazing!

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2008 1:36 PM

Wow, the ultimate "FUCK YOU" is right. Was he actually playing those chords?

Posted by pop_guru | June 29, 2008 1:42 PM

haha no he wasnt, but still hilarious. win goes to jay-z, love noel and oasis, but had that one coming to him

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2008 2:03 PM

it's funny because: he means what the song says, and he doesn't even know the lyrics that well...

oh yeah, and everyone is singing alone

i'm up to the minute on hip hop, but i thought he had retired like years agoo...

Posted by dee | June 29, 2008 2:13 PM

fuck oasis

Jay-Z's a douche

Oasis = redundant.

How does poorly singing along to Wonderwall equal win? The fact that the whole crowd sand along just validates Noel anyway. People want the big dumb britpop sing along to close out a festival like Glasto.

Yup.

Anon 12:58 - "Oasis hasn't been relevant for a damn long time."

You idiot, their last tour and album was their most successful in the longest time.

Anon 12:58 - "Also, who doesn't love seeing Jay-Z rocking a strat?"

He doesn't know how to play it.

By the way, are you still sniffing and licking the crotch panel on your sister's panties?

from nme.com

"Jay-Z headlined Glastonbury tonight (June 28) in front of one of the largest crowds the Pyramid Stage has ever seen.

The rapper tackled the controversy over his top slot billing head-on from the first moment of the set.

Before taking to the stage, the stage's video screens played Noel Gallagher's recent statement, "I don't want hip-hop at Glastonbury".

It ended with Gallagher saying, "Jay-Z has got no fucking chance", as the rapper took to the stage and mimed along to Oasis' 'Wonderwall'."

Posted by mike | June 29, 2008 3:23 PM

the world's biggest hop hop artist cannot sing in tune

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2008 3:58 PM

Aye cos he rap's!!

He does not sing!

He Raps so no need for him to be in tune!

it equals win because they sang 99 problems immediately after too, which wen along with the dis. he came played that poorly on purpose, then said i only have one thing to say "i got 99 problems, but a bitch(aka noel)aint one"

Jay z is the king of all media

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2008 4:52 PM

How else could he do what he does?

Posted by Jay-Z Has Aids | June 29, 2008 4:53 PM

Not to mention replacing the beat in the second verse of 99 problems with the legendary AC/DC guitar riff from Back In Black.

Posted by anon | June 29, 2008 5:00 PM

Jay-Z doesn't care about white people.

pretty clever way to get back at a shitty remark.

So we're all agreed on the rules of Glastonbury then. No Jews and no blacks.

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2008 7:31 PM

you mean only blacks rap?

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2008 7:34 PM

i agree with the person who said this validates oasis. it's not jay z owning oasis when the whole crowd is singing along to a recording of the song.

They still call it the White House
But that's a temporary condition, too.
Can you dig it, CC?

And if I don't cop, it ain't mine to have
But I'll be reachin' for ya
'Cause I love ya, CC.
Right on.

There's a lot of chocolate cities, around
We've got Newark, we've got Gary
Somebody told me we got L.A.
And we're working on Glastonbury
But you're the capital, CC

Posted by Some black guy | June 29, 2008 8:10 PM

given that the oasis guy sounded basically racist in that article, it took some serious miscalculations by jay-z to make himself look like he was the ass at the end of the day.

Posted by aviatrix | June 29, 2008 8:23 PM

this is dumb. Glastonbury really was meant for guitar music, at least in a headlining sense. And you know what, at the time Wonderwall came out, I couldn't stand Oasis, but listening to it now in retrospect, it was an epic song that transcended through the years. too bad everything was downhill after that!

Posted by bumblefrak | June 29, 2008 9:06 PM

Im not sure how anyone can see a winner in this. Jay Z cleverly came up with a nice fuck you to Noel. The guitar bit and the atrocious off key singing made him look dumb and not very musically talented. Plus Noel gets paid of course for public performance and broadcast performance as this was on the tele. And ultimately Glastonbury did not sell out this year and had the worst ticket sales in years which is also what Noel said would happen.

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2008 9:08 PM

to quote Cartman from Southpark, "shutup Token you black a$$hole!"

Posted by bumblefrak | June 29, 2008 9:12 PM

Rihanna's version of "Paper Planes" is even worse, therefore funnier, therefore better.

next year, Nas covers Blur's "Country House."

Posted by Anonymous | June 29, 2008 9:16 PM

Anon 7:31-from the stage too.Amy Winehouse,Neil Diamond and Leonard Cohen are jews you dumbfuck.

All 3 Performed at this year's Glastonbury.

Yeah but they gave pretty cheap performances.

Jews at Glastonbury:

VAMPIRE WEEKEND -- multiple members (oh no, here it comes...)

MGMT

BEN FOLDS

The guitarist from EDITORS

AMY WINEHOUSE

half of BATTLES

ST. VINCENT (Annie Clark)

LEONARD COHEN

JOAN BAEZ

half of THE NATIONAL

NEIL DIAMOND

etc.

The problem with Glastonbury this year was that ALL the headliners were bunk, not just Jay-Z. And for a British festival that prides themselves on boasting hometown headliners, it seems as though the biggest Brit act performing this year was... James Blunt? Exactly.

From Wikipedia:

"Noel had an unhappy childhood. He and his brothers were often beaten by his alcoholic father,[2] and he was often reclusive—Liam described him as "the weirdo in the family"

Product of his environment.

Oasis is to Glastonbury as Jimi Hendrix is to Woodstock. That said.. fucking nice job on Jay-Z's part. His shitty music aside, that made me laugh my ass off.

I wish someone would just eat the high horse that Noel is riding on.

Posted by sixtypercentgrey | June 30, 2008 12:53 AM

I love how even when Oasis is not playing Glastonbury they are still the biggest story of the festival.

Noel was right with his comments. The festival didn't sell out this year, lowest ever. If Radiohead, Coldplay or Muse played Saturday night, Glastonbury would be in full kick ass mode.

Noel was asked a question about why Glastonbury didn't sell out. He gave a very honest answer and was proven right.

I also find it funny that Jay-Z's biggest crowd response was for an Oasis song. If not for all this hype with Noel's comments, Jay-Z brought nothing to the table.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2008 1:16 AM

I didn't even know any of this was going on, but JZ delivered a brutal diss to Noel. And yes JZ does care about white people. They buy most of his records.

Posted by Yikes! | June 30, 2008 8:11 AM

This is retarded. The guitar is a prop. Hes not playing. and the people are singing along cause they love the song. It wasn't a slap in the face. it was a tribute to a kick ass band!

Posted by Jay | June 30, 2008 8:17 AM

The festival did eventually sell and as much a factor in slow sales, if not more than the Jay Z controversy, was the bad, bad weather of the last few years (people getting 'trench foot' last year is quite a dampener!). Add that to the fact that Kings of Leon and The Verve were the other headliners (I'd refuse to go on the strength that I'd prefer not to closer than 5 miles to Richard Ashcroft's ego).

Glasto made it's cash. Jay Z's set is already being talked about as a Glasto "moment" (think Radiohead 97 and Pulp 95). He owned it, man.

Posted by marwood | June 30, 2008 8:36 AM

Jay-Z's set was boooooooooooooooooooring. Ripping off other people's songs and singing over them. Big deal.

People in the UK love Kings of Leon and The Verve. Kings of Leon have more UK success than USA. they sell out all their dates over there same as the Verve last winter for their reunion tour.

Organizers have already said next year will be a return to ROCK. So Jay-Z was a one off stunt.

Would be awesome if next year Glastonbury was: Radiohead, Oasis and Coldplay. With Kasabian opening up for Oasis.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2008 9:26 AM

A fuck you to Noel straight into a fire version of 99 Probs = Sorry that's a win for Hov. Hilarious...

Posted by BTW | June 30, 2008 9:53 AM

sixtypercentgrey said "Oasis is to Glastonbury as Jimi Hendrix is to Woodstock."

Bitch, please. No need to parade your ignorance here.

Posted by green nigel | June 30, 2008 9:58 AM

Oasis is to Glastonbury what Country Joe and the Fish were to Woodstock.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2008 10:21 AM

Even I agree that my son Jay-Z can't play an instrument of carry a tune. His "diss" was weak since it was the only song that mattered to the crowd and his attempt at "singing" was piss poor.

Posted by Jay-Z's Mom | June 30, 2008 10:29 AM

Jay Z should learn to fucking sing.

Jay Z is a fucking joke.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2008 10:36 AM

you guys are totally right, it's completely hov's fault that glastonbury didn't sell out. you guys are like the new oracles.

(because you're so smart is what I'm saying)

Posted by MonsoonSeason | June 30, 2008 10:36 AM

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2008 10:38 AM

Noel wins! Yay!

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2008 10:38 AM

Jay Z is the biggest non-epic set Glasto has ever seen. A bunch of samples. Big fucking deal.

The OAsis thing made this painfully clear, yeah people sung the song - cause its a good one, not cause they were mocking Oasis, seems jay Z was in on his joke of one.

Oh and try to learn the guitar if you choose to try and mock a guitar player, we mock want we can't do.

Or better yet, try creating something from scratch and do it without some hook that came years before you.

Festivus for the rest of us!

Posted by greg | June 30, 2008 10:52 AM

The last time Oasis headlined Glastonbury (2004). The entire event sold out in 24 hours. Compare it to this year with over 3,000 tickets still up for grabs the day before the festival.

I guess what I'm saying is...OASIS RULES!

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2008 11:07 AM

WHO CARES? We're arguing over which one of these guys is more significant...both of them are done, Noel and Jay-Z should both end up at the same retirement home. They're both assholes in their own way, and why do we give a shit?

Noel is about to put out another shit Oasis album and Jay-Z is going to retire for the 8th time and make a "comeback" next year.....

Posted by the monolith | June 30, 2008 11:12 AM

I bet that new Oasis album is going to rock hard. Pure rock band who don't kiss ass like U2 and Coldplay do. I respect that. Grandma Rock is lame.

Who the hell is Jay-Z?

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2008 11:20 AM

Yeah...what's a Jay-Z?

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2008 11:42 AM

1. Glastonbury eventually sold out. Go to the Guardian and see.
2. Noel, while a great guitarist, is a ultimately a twat for proclaiming that hip-hop had no place on the main stage.
3. Jay-Z's intro was perfecto. The perfect diss.

Posted by Patrick | June 30, 2008 12:16 PM

I'm not a fan of Noel either... but that's one of the few intelligent things points that he has made. That festival is so not about talentless American zillionaire thugs. To put modern hip-hop "celebs" in the same league as great modern rock bands is blasphemy. We might as well drop a Walmart on the festival. Fuck Jay-Z, Kanye West... all that other talentless shit that is corrupting our lost youth.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2008 12:33 PM

Hip Hop won't be back in a headlining spot for a long long time, if ever. Yes the festival did eventually sell out but this was the first time it didn't sell out weeks prior.

I really think Jay-Z looked sad. His biggest hit of the night was covering, or attempting to cover Wonderwall. That crowd looked dead after song 1.

Eavis has said rock will return for all 3 nights next year.

Radiohead, Oasis, Coldplay!

Make it happen.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2008 12:37 PM

Another good point is Noel's comments were from the first week in April when over 40,000 tickets were still up for grabs after being on sale for several weeks. He was asked what probably caused this and he said it prob had to do with one less guitar band on the biggest night (Saturday)and going with Jay-Z.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2008 12:39 PM

STOP THE CLOCKS AND TURN THE WORLD AROUND...

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2008 12:41 PM

>Jay-Z's set was boooooooooooooooooooring. Ripping >off other people's songs and singing over them. Big >deal.

Yeah, Oasis never ripped off anyone elses songs and sang over them.

Wanker.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2008 12:47 PM

For those that think the Young's "Wonderwall" entrance didn't hit the mark... here's some context - the 2 minute intro video that played before Jay stepped on stage.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3y1AtpgTujk

I love Noel but he got pwned here.

Posted by marwood | June 30, 2008 12:49 PM

did Oasis ever play a CD of someone else's music and do a karaoke-style performance over it? I don't think so... that's strictly a phenomenon of the modern hip-hop "artist".

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2008 12:50 PM

Just watched that opening clip. Thats it? You gotta be kidding me. 5 seconds total of Noel comments and another 2 minutes of random celebs/politicians not even commenting on Jay Z. Jigga man had nothing. Just 5 seconds of Noel comments on why the festival prob sold poorly.

Man, that was some diss huh? Everyone grown up.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2008 12:59 PM

Well, it seems that we're all gonna see what we're gonna see... either Jay killed or hip-hip isn't valid.

I love Gallagher (truly, I have the photo's of my haircut in 1996 to prove it!) and I love Jay. I thought Jay responded to the comments and controversy well and Gallagher came out of it looking a little out of touch with "the kids". Jay put on a great show, the crowd (rumoured to be the biggest single crowd for a headliner at Glasto) loved it and everyone had a smile on their faces; surely what Glasto is all about?

It beats the fuck out of watching The Verve plod through their middling indie rock.

Posted by marwood | June 30, 2008 1:40 PM

"he's a rapper, retards. who cares if he can't sing in-key."

Everyone who had to stand there and listen to him, that's who.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2008 1:41 PM

right, i WAS AT GLASTONBURY FESTIVAL.
i physically saw him perform in front of me, the only reason i was at the front was because i saw amy winehouse and thought itd be interesting to see him play.
lets make this clear; i absolutely dont like hiphop/rnb music, but seeing jay-z is an experience. you cant really 'diss' jay z though - he has made MILLIONS, - SO HAS NOEL!!
for gods sake. the atmosphere in the crowd was pretty amazing. even if i dont like jay-z i still think he was very brave, and fair play.
at the end of the day, who gives a shit? everyone has different music tastes, so you cant say other bands shouldnt play because its not JUST YOUR OPINION THAT MATTERS.

(personally, i didnt stay long though, massive attack were playing on the Other Stage, so i went to see them)

But ill never forget the beginning of jay-z. itll will defiantly go down in glastonbury history... not alot of people can say theyve done that can they?

while we're at it, that bob dylan guy can't really sing either.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2008 3:17 PM

Looks to me like he was a bit taken back that the crowd kept singing.

I am sure the next Hip Hop festival will let Radiohead or Coldplay or better yet Oasis headline!! I'm guessing not!

Noel (albeit a bit grumpy and rightfully so) was right!

Posted by K | June 30, 2008 5:31 PM

noel's coke-addled memory failed him when he said glastonbury is a "guitar" festival.

the largest attended performance ever was Spiritualized, a few years ago. oh, but they were white, so i guess that doesn't fit his bullshit theory.

Posted by Anonymous | June 30, 2008 11:19 PM

hes making a living yeah? which is more than you guys can say wasting your time arguing on this site. id like to see you headline at glastonbury.

Jay Z ftw!

All of you listen up. I've got some
plain and simple facts and I don't even like
JayZ music but I've got to give it up to him as
his set was said to be a major success.

Who sells more records

Who has made more money

JayZ or Oasis = JayZ

Who has more skills outside of performing.

JayZ was president of Def Jam Recordings.
