Liz Phair @ Hiro Ballroom, NYC - June 25, 2008 (rideon)
Liz Phair

Liz Phair acoustically performed her 15-year old album "Exile in Guyville" at Hiro Ballroom in NYC last night. The show was in support of the reissue of that album, and she'll do it again tonight.

Pitchfork.TV interviewed Liz Phair in the back of Cake Shop. You can watch it below....

This may be a stupid question, but how was it acoustic if she played an electric guitar?

Anyway, Cake Shop is damaged goods now that it has been contaminated by Pitchfork.

Going tonight. Anyone know at what time she came on?

Posted by anonymous | June 26, 2008 12:34 PM

the guitar wasn't plugged in.

Posted by one of them | June 26, 2008 12:34 PM

she was on at 8:30 sharp, as advertised.

Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2008 12:36 PM

like 8:35 but yeah...she was done with 1 encore at 9:55...

nice air conditioning in that place.

try to get something close so you can see the 30 year old girls in front swoon and cry remembering when they were cute and had their whole lives ahead of them.

as for the music, liz was a little nervous and a little in awe. the crowd was hugely supportive. it was weird being at a 'pop' show but 'mesmerizing' and 'divorce song' was great.

Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2008 12:54 PM

She jumped back to an indie after 2 failed attempts (at mainstream radio)?

Posted by anon | June 26, 2008 1:04 PM

Looking forward to seeing Liz tonight, but looking more forward to all the beat down guys who got drug there by their bitchy girlfriends/wives. For example, the poster above. This 35 year old girl hopes your dick falls off, you smart aleck little fuck.

Amanda Petrusich is probably the worst music writer in history. I made the mistake of reading her analysis of "Pink Moon", which was part of the 33 1/3 series on great albums. It was the worst piece of drivel I have ever read. She writes like a 15 year old. Which would be ok if she weren't getting paid. Just thought I'd mention.

Posted by C$$ | June 26, 2008 1:07 PM

the guitar wasn't plugged in.

Posted by one of them | June 26, 2008 12:34 PM

You were one of her guitars?

Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2008 1:07 PM

thank god she didn't go acoustic. that would have been slightly off. eig should be plugged in and she was. a band was backing her. she played her guitar. she was better with the slower numbers like "Dance of the seven veils" and "shatter". "explain it to me" was sublime. people pretty much sang along to every song which was a little annoying but whatever.

Liz was good, the crowd was surprsingly douchey. We were surrounded by tall guys, and couldn't see Liz at all. A girl in front of us kept taking the same picture over and over again AND she was writing down the set list. Yes, the set list for a show where an entire record is played in order. Even douchier was this couple standing right by us. Some dude was standing next to the girl in the couple, and leaning in her direction so he could see Liz through the tall guys. First, she pulled her boyfriend right up on her, because OF COURSE he probably wanted to sleep with her. When that didn't work, she said something to him, THEN she completely told him off and told him to move away from her. Liz seemed to have a good time, though.

it's ALWAYS hard to see at Hiro Ballroom. I wish Bowery would stop booking shows at that place.

Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2008 1:22 PM

still very hittable

Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2008 1:29 PM

I would NEVER hit a woman.

Posted by Anonymouse | June 26, 2008 1:36 PM

1:05...i didnt mean to offend you...i actually thought it was great watching the crowd reaction...it was like that negative approach show i went to in may. (wonder how many people saw liz phair and negative approach).

as for me, i was listening to exile after spin labeled it best album of 93...i still think its a great album and i took one of the girls im banging to see it. figured itd get sensitive points.

Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2008 1:38 PM

C$$ - you're right.... Amanda is a complete idiot.

She couldn't write her Date of Birth correctly.

Doesn't know squat about music. No wonder the all around industry is dead - it's run by fat white old men or clueless hipsters all with their heads up their wazoos.

yo mandy poo got schooled in the intelligence and looks department.

and, how is mandy qualified to do this interview, since she was about 10 yrs old when guyville was released?

what's next, she's gonna become the official biographer for paul mccartney?

Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2008 1:47 PM

HITTING WOMEN IS WRONG

Posted by especially with pipes | June 26, 2008 1:50 PM

that interview is painful to watch, i'm sorry

Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2008 1:59 PM

It was a bit douchey, wasn't it? I mean if you're tall, stand in the fucking back. Hiro is small enough so that any spot you get, as long as you aren't stuck behind someone taller, is a good spot. Stop being selfish douchebags at concerts, especially in venues that fucking small. There's just *no* reason for it. I think I saw the top of liz's head for about 85% of the concert (and I'm average height) because a group of tall guys just didn't give a fuck about anyone else behind them.

Posted by v | June 26, 2008 2:00 PM

Is that the Mandy who often posts comments here on BV?

Posted by Well, I'll be darned. | June 26, 2008 2:00 PM

so because i'm 6'4" i'm not allowed to be up front at shows?

Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2008 2:06 PM

At someplace as small as Hiro? No.

Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2008 2:11 PM

Don't want no tall people.

Posted by Mandy Rewnan | June 26, 2008 2:14 PM

Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2008 2:21 PM

If you short people want to be at the front to see the band, get there earlier. Simple as that.

Don't try and control us tall, handsomer and probably better endowed folk, for we will crush you under our feet.

Posted by Pierre | June 26, 2008 2:26 PM

I'd tap dat ass.

Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2008 2:30 PM

If you shorties can't see above the trees, bring a fucking milk carton and stand on it. Why the hell should I stand all the way in the back and not see shit just because you midgets were born with Verne Troyer genes and too-sensitive nerves? Ain't nothin' worse at a standing-only show than a complaining short person yelling at ya to move. BRING A MILK CARTON.

Posted by Hatred for Idiots | June 26, 2008 2:33 PM

i would watch TV with liz.

Posted by robert doosh | June 26, 2008 2:41 PM

Did all the ageing single ladies in the crowd cry when she played "Fuck and Run" ?

Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2008 2:47 PM

tall people will run this shit

Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2008 2:50 PM

how about a compromise? if you're on the tall side, look around you and see if there is someone short directly behind you for whom your presence is an obstruction. offer to let this person move in front of you. it's common courtesy, really.

'bring a milk carton'? clever but ridiculous.

and by the comments on this post, it sounds like tall dudes go to concerts to 'bang' a chick. and you don't need to be all that close to the stage to be working your voodoo. (it's quieter away from the stage and you can whisper your sweet nothins'.)

and don't knock amanda petrusich. she may not be a congenial screen presence but her writing is top-notch.

Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2008 2:53 PM

I love the whole tall/short argument. As a tall person, I do feel sorry the the shorter people at standing shows. I'm often there with someone shorter. Standing in the back isn't really fair for them or me. At least I never cut in front of anyone. If you don't want to stand behind tall people then move, get there earlier, or ask me nicely if you can move in front of me. Being born tall doesn't make me douchey.

Posted by 6'-1" | June 26, 2008 2:54 PM

i am short and got there at 8:15...stood right by the side near the entrance and saw nothing but short people and liz the entire show.

id rather see a show at hiro than that death trap called cake shop anyday.

air conditioning rulez!

Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2008 2:57 PM

i always thought life was high school all over again but now i see that everything is kindergarten all over again... so in order to properly attend a rock show that is general admission i'm supposed to stand in the back cause i'm 6'2. unspoken guide to making everyone else happy rule number 7456.6.

my favorite concert goers aren't really the height challenged ones. my favorite are the ones who show up two seconds before the artist go on and act like there shouldn't be anyone up front. wow look at all these people, how are we going to get up front. lets push.

it is only hard to see at hiro if you are from lillyput.

Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2008 3:00 PM

sucked in 1993, sucks now

Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2008 3:10 PM

dude, aren't you the short one? i'm 6'7", and i always move for short pretty girls. tends to pay off.

Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2008 3:25 PM

this is sad, that she doesn't have any new material, and has to resort to playing this.

Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2008 3:38 PM

like, yeah, like, um, totally, hhehehehe haahhuhuh, um, like, uh, totally. yeah, like, ....like, um, totally. um, like, yeah.

Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2008 3:44 PM

get their earlier or quit complaining. it's general admission, you are owed nothing.

Posted by anon | June 26, 2008 3:54 PM

*there

Posted by anon | June 26, 2008 3:54 PM

"C$$ - you're right.... Amanda is a complete idiot.

Someone on internet blog dealing with the Brooklyn music scene calls someone else a hipster as a pejorative. The new definition of irony?

Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2008 4:15 PM

Was there an opening act? Did the doors open at 7 like advertised?

Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2008 4:16 PM

I got there earlier. Evil tall dudes stood right in front of me and started imploring Liz to take her shirt off. Douchey? I think so.

Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2008 4:18 PM

You got there earlier than 7? They let you in for the show? Thanks.

Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2008 4:21 PM

What is this? Pussy Loser Vegan?

U cannot be serious complaining about the tall guys. Fucking push and shove your way up to the front unless you are such a puss that you can't. Ever hear the phrase "Big Tree Fall Hard" Tall guys are the easiest to push out of the way. I get to a show whenever I feel like it and i shove my way right up front. Just because you get there early gives you no right to any space on that floor. You dont own the property so fuck you.

Oh and as an aside the tall guy saying he had a huge dick etc etc is probably a small dicked loser who cant get girls

And the guy who made the comment about all the 30 something girls up front crying at their lost youth and what they have become. Dude that was both the most truthfully insightful as well as hilarious comment on this thing.

Posted by A Manhattan Not Brooklyn Asshole | June 26, 2008 4:41 PM

If you shorties can't see above the trees, buy a fucking carton of milk and drink it. Why the hell should my calcium-enriched ass stand all the way in the back and not see shit just because you milk-challenged midgets won't drink your milk and grow a little before the show? Ain't nothin' worse at a standing-only show than a complaining, non-milk drinking short person yelling at ya to move. DRINK A CARTON OF MILK.

Posted by Crosseyed Sniper | June 26, 2008 4:43 PM

When the flying alien monsters come, they'll eat the tall people first!

Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2008 4:55 PM

milk isn't vegan.

Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2008 5:11 PM

^^You, sir, are a daft punk.

Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2008 5:27 PM

what was with the dude who smoked pot and blew it in her face?

Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2008 5:59 PM

I kinda wish both of them would kiss...or fight.

Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2008 6:18 PM

>>I get to a show whenever I feel like it and i shove my way right up front. Just because you get there early gives you no right to any space on that floor. You dont own the property so fuck you.<<

And the person who trips you as you shove past, and watches you fall on your ass and drop your beer, and laughs how how much of an asshole you are?

That's me.

You little fuck!!

Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2008 6:39 PM

And I'm the person who trips you after you trip him, you sanctimonious fuck!

Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2008 8:10 PM

And I'm the person who trips YOU, ya midget moron!

Posted by Anonymous | June 26, 2008 11:36 PM

Liz was on, the band was aces, the crowd was chock full of the kinds of guys she DESCRIBES ON THE ALBUM. Oddly similar to a lot of the commenters above. So far we've got:

*Ladies, if you're over 30, your life is over. Sorry. Some douche on the internet said so. Them's the rules.
*However, if you're under 30, there is no possible way you could understand Exile in Guyville, or, by extension, any other piece of art published before you could drive.
*And, if like many women you are shorter than the average man, you better fucking quit whining about it, bitch, or I'll give you something to whine about!

It's one thing if you just don't like her music. It's quite another to be a FAN of this album and continue to unselfconsciously perpetrate the bad behavior she criticizes.

11:44 -- thank you.

Posted by Anonymous | June 27, 2008 12:24 AM

same as ever - her voice isn't great and she has a hard time with the chord changes and the songs are as amazing as they ever were...a great show.

now for the rant -

Q - what's the worst part of a show with a big female crowd?

A - trying to get a drink....which takes forever because:

1. all the girls want a mixed drink - unlike guys that know you drink beer at a rock show

2. girls never pay cash - so there is a credit card transaction for every drink, and......

3. because girls can't seem to run a tab and split up the bill at the end, every time there is a new round of drinks to be bought, a different girl goes to the bar and pays with a credit card, but only for that round - which means the bartender has to run the charge and close out the bill. run a tab! split it up at the end!
