Luna Lounge not reopening until it is a Knitting Factory?

Knitting Factory and Luna Lounge

Brooklyn music venue Luna Lounge has been closed since April, and it doesn't look like they'll ever open again. Not as Luna Lounge anyway. As you can see by the sign that is posted on the door of 361 Metropolitan Avenue (AKA LUNA LOUNGE), "Knitting Factory Entertainment plans to open a bar w/ live music" at that location. This wouldn't be a second Knitting Factory. This would be the only Knitting Factory after the Manhattan location finishes up its lease in its endanged Tribeca location
(thx Robert for the pic).

Kind of sucks that Knitting Factory would move to fuck all Brooklyn. Maybe Luna Lounge can move back to Manhattan, please.

The neighborhood (note correct spelling) went when you canucks or limeys moved in.

You mean my only choices to see a decent show in Manhattan are at Bowery Presents venues?

Oh, there's Cake Shop. You can take the Knitting Factory.

not to mention all you red necks, hicks and westies.

folks...the knitting factory stopped being relevant years and years ago. when they were housing people like tom cora, john zorn, and cecil taylor & thurston moore, it was actually doing something sonic and important. these days, it's whatever brings the pop/rock kids out.

Posted by Anonymous | June 13, 2008 2:28 PM

2:28 is pretty funny considering that thurston is playing there TONIGHT

i kinda like the knitting factory. it's a really good sized room and i've seen many great shows there.

the luna lounge was so big and cavernous and they never booked bands that could come close to filling it out.

Posted by Anonymous | June 13, 2008 2:41 PM

they capped luna at 350, when it can hold 500

Posted by Anonymous | June 13, 2008 2:45 PM

2:28 - semen is relevant to your chin

sweet - the knitting factory rules - the luna lounge sucked ... name me ONE other club in NYC that has Lydia Lunch one night and The Beatnuts the next night? Word is bond!!!

Posted by Anonymous | June 13, 2008 3:00 PM

nuts.

Posted by Anonymous | June 13, 2008 3:02 PM

i think this is good news, hopefully the kf will bring bands that can actually make good use of the great space. when it was filled, luna actually had really great sound. i loved to see/play shows there.

This sucks. I thought KF was moving to East 14th? That would've been a perfect location.

Posted by Anonymous | June 13, 2008 3:32 PM

"neighbourhood" with a 'u' is the correct spelling of neighborhood, if you're in london.

Posted by Anonymous | June 13, 2008 3:42 PM

whateva, W'burg is easier to get to than stupid Tribeca anywayz

Posted by Anonymous | June 13, 2008 3:43 PM

The L train runs along east 14th street!

we had a great show at the tap bar last Friday hosting Phobia and Skarp. If you think it's irrelevant, you have no clue. Go back to your Simon and Garfunkel records.

Posted by grind your face in | June 13, 2008 4:16 PM

Wow, didn't see that one coming! So they gave up on the rumored 14th street location?

On the one hand I'm sad to see Luna leave, but having KF in the area will be awesome.

knitting was/is a great spot. ive seen pharoah sanders, badly drawn boy, riverboat gamblers, promise ring, soundtrack of our lives, clientele, hot snakes...so many great shows.

not really pleased about having to go to williamsburg to see a show there but whatever...beats it closing for good.

I read shit like this...

"...the knitting factory stopped being relevant years and years ago. when they were housing people like tom cora, john zorn, and cecil taylor & thurston moore"

and i gotta ask: who exactly is it that stopped being relevant? Each generation to their own, my friend. Don't beat on the Knit for staying young.

You know what would rule? Knitting Factory Manhattan + Knitting Factory Brooklyn.

Posted by Anonymous | June 13, 2008 7:34 PM

wow, rmember when even a taxi wouldn't come to Williamsburg?

Posted by Anonymous | June 14, 2008 9:08 AM

the only thing relevant is happening in my pants

I live walking distance from knitting factory and I for one am happy that i'll be able to walk there. They generally have good shows. not always, but I have seen many of my favorite bands there (especially foreign based ones) and only there.

I understand that more and more Wburg is turning into an extension of the east village...I know you can argue it already is but I've been here for a while and I've seen the transformation get worse and worse. But it's inevitable. You can't stop it. Just look at all the construction around. Wburg started on this path about 10 to 12 (maybe a bit more) years ago when all the honky artists moved here.

We could all venture east and south into the outskirts of Wburg
(which are already transforming into what Wburg once was) but that too will eventually succumb to the same process.

So what do we learn from this. If you are a local NYer and living in a neighborhood where rents are cheap and it's ethnically diverse or at least devoid of white suburban transplants from across the country... and you see artists and cafes move into your neighborhood... shoot them or you'll lose your apt eventually from your greedy landlord figuring out that he could charge more for rent now. fucking real estate brokers and landlords. Gentrification prices gouging is really their fault.

thank you Fguts for telling us something no one knows.

nyc will now officially suck for shows. keep the knit and bring back coney island high while we're at it.

seriously, this is lame

this is sad news indeed. I've still managed to catch a few good shows here and there at the Knitting Factory in the last year or two. You really have to do your research but there are some gem shows there on occasion.

did you all see that article in the NY Times about more yuppies moving to the "New" Brooklyn? what a crap. yuppies from the upper west side move to Brooklyn because more and more luxury condos with fitness centers and the like are available. what a damned joke.

This is a wash with a bit of a loss IMO. On the one hand, KF had THE worst sound system since CB's.

On the 2nd hand, perhaps KF will blossom in a better space...depends on how they spend the money I suppose.

On the 3rd hand Rob (LL Owner, Operator) was the shit and will be sorely missed.

And since I can't think of any creatures that actually have 3 hands I say we just call it as is....NY has fewer and fewer independently owned and operated rock venues that are good so this is pretty bad news...sorry, I tried to look for a bright side.

Love,
brendan
